Thanks dude. I might ask for more detail later if the topic comes up again.

Really awesome thread. I need to come to this sub-forum more often. I feel smarter already.

I'll update the full chart tomorrow (and the values will shift slightly even with the Stars not playing today, just because the algorithm re-evaluates each team's strength using all information including games played today), but Jhonas Enroth now qualifies for the chart with Dallas, and his Dallas schedule is tougher than any other goalie/team this year (at +0.29 goals/game):

Colorado on the road
San Jose at home
Minnesota on the road
Winnipeg on the road
Anaheim at home
Florida on the road
Tampa Bay on the road
Calgary at home
St. Louis at home
Nashville on the road

His numbers may be lower than the Stars had hoped for with the trade, but there may be a (partial) reason for it (I also question the weird overall pattern of the Stars' goaltender usage this year).

I've finished the 2014-15 regular season update for the NHL, so am posting some interesting numbers (all totals, including goal support, goaltender variation, hot/cold, are on my site including the links below).

Toughest average opponent (min. 1000 minutes played):

Easiest average opponent (min. 1000 minutes played):

All totals are separated by team (so Dubnyk gets totals for the Coyotes and for the Wild separately).

These will move somewhat during the playoffs, as the SRS wiggles a little.

1975-76, 1976-77, and 1977-78 are now updated and on the site.

I haven't dug too much yet into where the interesting parts are, although I did immediately looked for this:

http://www.hockeygoalies.org/bio/nhl/montreal.html

Average opponent (SoS), 1975-76:
Dryden +0.10, Larocque -0.46

Average opponent (SoS), 1976-77:
Dryden +0.00, Larocque -0.21

Average opponent (SoS), 1977-78:
Dryden +0.09, Larocque -0.37

Average opponent (SoS), 1978-78:
Dryden +0.03, Larocque -0.18

(For those new to the thread, units are goals/game above or below league average).

These are the most significantly consistent differences between a team's goaltenders I've yet seen.

I also expected the Canadiens' playoff strengths of schedule to be lesser, given the league situation in the late 1970s.

However, bad teams (for the most part) missed the playoffs, so the field was almost exclusively above average, and the Canadiens got a first-round bye (which is good for the team, but misses the chance to get a cupcake).

Also, since relative to the league, "good" was better and "bad" was worse, the extremes are higher/lower than you would see in today's league.

Here's Dryden directly:
http://hockeygoalies.org/bio/drydenk.html
For instance, Ken Dryden's 1976 playoff strength of schedule was an impressive +1.01. He faced Chicago (-0.07), the Islanders (+1.39), and the Flyers (+1.72). Of course, the Canadiens were a +2.06 themselves.

Here are the 1974-75 opponent strengths (these will feed into the calculations I'm currently running for 1974-75 goaltenders):

OPPONENT | HOME | AWAY
Montreal|+1.376|+2.322
Philadelphia|+0.951|+1.896
Buffalo|+0.837|+1.783
Boston|+0.745|+1.691
Los Angeles|+0.481|+1.426
NY Rangers|+0.144|+1.089
NY Islanders|+0.115|+1.061
Pittsburgh|-0.012|+0.933
Chicago|-0.212|+0.734
Atlanta|-0.275|+0.671
Vancouver|-0.301|+0.644
St. Louis|-0.470|+0.476
Toronto|-0.725|+0.221
Detroit|-1.326|-0.380
California|-1.614|-0.669
Minnesota|-1.864|-0.919
Kansas City|-2.143|-1.198
Washington|-3.524|-2.578

First observation: home ice advantage is measured here at +0.946 goals/game, the largest I can remember seeing (maybe I missed something).

Second observation: Washington Capitals. :amazed: I have a feeling that there will be some interesting schedule strengths as a result.

Schedule strengths have been updated to include the 1974-75 NHL season (using the weights above). These are most easy to compare directly using the team pages, for instance:

http://www.hockeygoalies.org/bio/nhl/boston.html

Remember:
  • SoS - average strength of a goaltender's opponents (time weighted). Units are goals/game, so a +0.50 means that a goaltender's typical opponent would be favored by +0.50 goals in a game against an average team on neutral ice.
  • OS%+ - how much better (or worse) a goaltender's typical opponent's shooting percentage is (shots weighted). These are percents, not percentage points. If the league average shooting percentage is 0.09, and a goaltender's OS%+ is +5.0%, then the goaltender's typical opponent has a shooting percentage of 0.0945 (and the goaltender would have a save percentage of 0.9055).
In both cases, bigger means a tougher schedule.

1974-75 NHL team notes:

  • For Atlanta, the story was always how Dan Bouchard and Phil Myre split games evenly. The number of games may have been even, but this is now the third straight year (1974-75 to 1976-77) where Bouchard played a meaningfully tougher schedule. For 1974-75, it was Bouchard (+0.18) and Myre (-0.03).
  • Ross Brooks had a 10-3-3 record for the Bruins in 1974-75 at the age of 37. Great, right? Well, his average opponent was -0.64 goals below average (while teammate Ken Broderick faced +0.70 on average). Brooks also had great goal support, but more on that later.
  • Were the Sabres sheltering Roger Crozier at this point? Bromley (-0.01) played a much tougher schedule than Crozier (-0.35).
  • NHL rookie Gary Simmons (+0.46) played a much tougher schedule than Giles Meloche (-0.06), and had marginally better results to boot.
  • Nothing meaningful to say about Chicago, although Michel Dumas' -2.81 average schedule (home games against Washington, Atlanta, and Kansas City) is interesting.
  • For the Red Wings, it looks like Rutherford (-0.09) had a decent schedule while McKenzie (+0.64) and Grant (+0.63) weren't so lucky.
  • All Scouts' goaltenders faced above-average schedules (surprise!), although Peter McDuffe (+0.04) was luckier than the rest.
  • In his greatest regular season, Rogie Vachon (+0.07) played tougher opponents than Gary Edwards (-0.16).
  • For the North Stars, Maniago (+0.02) and LoPresti (+0.08) were about even, although Fern Rivard (+0.50) was relatively screwed in his fifteen games.
  • In all five seasons where they were together (1974-75 through 1978-79), Ken Dryden (-0.02 in 1974-75) played a meaningfully tougher schedule than Larocque (-0.29 in 1974-75).
  • Billy Smith (+0.16) had a much harder schedule than Glenn Resch (-0.30).
  • Ed Giacomin (+0.23) faced tougher fare than Gilles Villemure (-0.09).
  • Bernie Parent (+0.08) played nearly all of the games, but Wayne Stephenson (-0.88) faced Kansas City twice, Washington, Minnesota twice, and Detroit twice (in twelve total games).
  • Nothing particularly interesting about Pittsburgh.
  • 21-year-old John Davidson (+0.12) had the tougher assignments compared to 39-year-old Ed Johnston (-0.03).
  • Gord McRae (-0.31) was the most sheltered of the Leafs' trio, among Favell (+0.17) and Dunc Wilson (+0.26).
  • Gary Smith had a nice year for the Canucks, also facing a much tougher schedule (+0.10) compared to Ken Lockett (-0.44).
  • Ah, Washington. Ron Low (+0.19) and Michel Belhumeur (+0.31) both had above average schedules, with also-winless John Adams (+0.64) taking the cake in limited action.

Bernie Parent (+0.71) had a pretty high strength of schedule for a Cup winner - remember that these balance to zero in a regular season, but there were a bunch of historically horrible clubs who obviously didn't make the playoffs.

In fact, only Rogie Vachon (-0.39) and Ed Johnston (-0.01 in one game) faced subpar playoff opposition.

Ken Lockett (+2.32) faced the Canadiens on the road in his one game, giving him the highest playoff schedule of 1975. Gary Smith (+1.88) was close.

Among those with meaningful (5+ GP) sample size, Roger Crozier (+1.37) ties Tony Esposito (+1.37) for toughest schedule, and Gary Inness (+0.40) has the easiest. Espo played Boston and Buffalo.

NHL 2015-16 goaltender strengths of schedule, through games of October 31.

These use the schedule strengths in the parallel (SRS) thread in this forum. Opponent strengths are minutes-weighted.

Normally, I list any goaltender to have played at least ten games for a team, but here (and for a few weeks) I'll use a minimum threshold of five games played.

These are also sorted alphabetically by team, and not by schedule disparity:

A brief interlude, since I've added 1973-74 NHL game logs (and extra metrics) to my site.

Team by team notes on schedule strength:

  • Flames: In each of 1974-75, 1975-76, and 1976-77, Dan Bouchard played a meaningfully more difficult schedule than Phil Myre. In 1973-74, Myre's finally playing a bit tougher opponents.
  • Bruins: Newcomer Gilles Gilbert (+0.27) was clearly used in tougher situations than Ross Brooks (-0.12) or Ken Broderick (-0.32). Brooks went 16-3-0 in his spot starts (you'll notice a similar pattern in 1974-75).
  • Sabres: Roger Crozier (-0.03) was the only goaltender to face a below-average schedule, Dave Dryden (+0.23), Gary Bromley (+0.39) and Rocky Farr (+0.36) were the others.
  • Golden Seals: Worst team in the league by far, and Meloche (+0.34), Champoux (+0.51) and Marv Edwards (+0.44) all had tough draws.
  • Black Hawks: Tony Esposito worked his magic against a mildly tough schedule (+0.15).
  • Red Wings: Doug Grant saw the most action of the six - yes, six - Detroit goalers, playing a tough (+0.30) competition. Jim Rutherford (+0.54) saw a very tough slate in his half-season.
  • Kings: Vachon (+0.24) and Gary Edwards (+0.21) had no meaningful difference. Thanks to the Penguins' game sheets for giving proof that Steve Rexe dressed at least once.
  • North Stars: In his last NHL season, Worsley (+0.00) was clearly sheltered by Maniago (+0.37).
  • Canadiens: With Dryden taking the year off, the rookie Larocque (-0.02) was given a break in favor of Wayne Thomas (+0.35) and Michel Plasse (+0.24).
  • Islanders: Billy Smith (+0.42) took the tougher of New York's starts, with Desjardins (+0.16) playing the rest for the second-year club.
  • Rangers: Gilles Villemure (+0.35) wasn't used much, but in generally tougher locations than Giacomin (+0.12).
  • Flyers: Playing six of his eight games on the road didn't help, but Bobby Taylor (+0.72) was used effectively in the few times that Bernie Parent (+0.08) was spelled.
  • Penguins: Maskless Andy Brown (+0.47) played the tougher starts for the Penguins; Gary Inness (+0.16) and Jim Rutherford (+0.01) were the other main netminders.
  • Blues: Stephenson (+0.27) and rookie John Davidson (+0.23) roughly matched schedules. Jim Watt (+2.25) got to play one period against the Bruins on the road. :amazed:
  • Maple Leafs: No meaningful difference between Favell (+0.17), Johnston (+0.30) and Dunc Wilson (+0.17).
  • Canucks: Again, no real difference between Gary Smith (+0.31), Ed Dyck (+0.22), and future Brodeur tutor Jacques Caron (+0.19).
I'm still looking forward to testing patterns - are young goaltenders sheltered? Are fan favorites predominantly played at home? How are veterans used? Do certain coaches exhibit consistency?

Through two months, a lot of this is random variation (and not deliberate coaching strategy), although I would expect the goaltenders who currently have faced easier schedules to regress (and those who have faced tougher schedules to improve).

The Lundqvist/Raanta split seems deliberate:

http://www.hockeygoalies.org/bio/nhl/logs/NYR2015.html

The Kings one surprises me, but it looks to be driven (to some degree) by Enroth playing mostly on the road:

http://www.hockeygoalies.org/bio/nhl/logs/LOS2015.html

Although even with that, Enroth's pure (not including home/road) opponents are on the tough side.

The gap between Lundqvist and Raanta is interesting to me.

And here's the 2015-16 relationships between opponent strength and goals-against average, shots faced per game, and save percentage:

Opp Strength | GAA | Sv% | S/60 | Min
-0.8|1.87|0.931|27.3|3,651
-0.5|2.25|0.922|29.0|16,708
+0.0|2.39|0.920|29.8|20,141
+0.5|2.72|0.910|30.3|12,224
+1.0|3.17|0.898|31.2|3,537
R^2|94%|86%|93%|

I would normally include -1.0 in the table above (instead of -0.8) but if you look at the parallel thread, there are currently no teams estimated in my "-1.0" range (from -0.8 to -1.2). Parity party!

Not sure what to make of the Crawford/Darling split, although it's essentially driven by home/road splits (Darling has three games at home and eight on the road).

I'm a big fan of Domingue, but it could be that his strong start is (in part) schedule driven.
