I have a rather odd interest in hockey history, I follow goalies who have dressed as a backup in NHL games but never played in the NHL. I'm fairly confident that my list is accurate after the year 2000, as I have access to complete box scores after this date. Prior to this it is very difficult to confirm that a particular goaltender actually dressed in the NHL. I have various sources but I will not add a goalie to my list until I have hard evidence to support that he dressed in the NHL. There are players, Aaron Israel as an example, who I believe may have dressed but lack sufficient evidence to prove it.
I am posting here because I've exhausted all my resources for goalies who may have dressed as a backup prior to 2000. I'm looking for leads of any kind. If you think a goalie may have served as a backup for your team please let me know the name so I can do further investigation.

^^^ Ya this really is quite interesting. Filling in the blanks since the introduction of the 2 goalie system no small task, time consuming.

Didn´t see Swedish Olow "Olie" Sundström Pittsburgh in 94-95 in list

At least according to these newspapers

Eliteprospect page. He had intresting career path.
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=1333

Actually some teams in NHA and very early NHL used very similar backup system than they are using now. In the first game of first NHL season Toronto replaced Sammy Hebert with Art Brooks who was substitute in that game. It wasn´t injury replacement and both were goalies.

Billy Hague had contract with Wanderers and was used as Bert Lindsays backup in the last NHA seasons so he might have been a sub. in some of those 4 Wanderers NHL games, but I haven´t seen those lineups in anywhere, so I don´t know for sure.

edit. Just now realized that Hockey Summary Project had those lineups and Hague wasn´t in those as sub so he never dressed in NHL.

Another name that came to my mind was Boris "The Spider" Rousson :). When he came to Finland in 94-95 he first played with Rangers mask. Apparently that was because he played with Binghamton Rangers though. But I checked from transactions and he was called up twice, in Dec 3, 91 and Feb 3 92. That season Vanbiesbrouck and Richter played all the games. According to this newspaper (http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=vgghAAAAIBAJ&sjid=dnYFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3139%2C2657981) Richter missed many games because of leg injury. I guess there is possibility that Rousson was backup at least in some of the games?

Thanks for your help! I'll be adding Olie Sundstorm to the site shortly.

I'll also be adding Boris Rousson. I've accumulate enough evidence to prove that he was the Rangers backup during the month of February in 1992.

Jan. 30, 1992 Mike Richter was injured in a game against the Kings, he pulled a thigh mussel.
Mark LaForest was recalled to serve as Vanbiesbrouck's backup for Feb. 1 game vs the North Stars, he was reassigned to the AHL on Feb. 3
February 4, 1992 Boris Rousson was recalled.
An article from that week notes that Rousson was practising with the team as Richter sat out.
An article from Feb. 24 notes that Richter missed 11 consecutive games, this dates back to his Jan. 30th injury.
Between Feb 1 and Feb 25 John Vanbiesbrouck plays every minutes of every game for the Rangers.
Feb. 26, 1992 Boris Rousson was sent back to the AHL
March 1, 1992 Mike Richter is back

Thanks,

Jay

No problem. I love this kind of stuff :)

Many of these benchwarmers, one game wonders and borderline NHL goalies end up making career in Europe and are quite familiar to me. Scott Munroe this season with Växjö Lakers might also qualify to list. (2008-2009 season?)
http://poststar.com/blogs/phantoms_forum/phantoms-sign-veteran-goaltender-scott-munroe/article_e4450f52-ecd6-11e1-a3e5-001a4bcf887a.html

Also I remembered reading that Steve Rexe, International goalie with Team Canada was backup in some NHL games. According to the newspaper quote edit. PMd to you. it was probably the case

According to this article from feb 11 Gary Edwards missed 24 games with an injury, but I have no idea if Rexe was the backup the whole time.
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=R1cqAAAAIBAJ&sjid=6VQEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2394%2C3968392

Searching Rexe I accidentally find this. If I understand this right Claude Hardy from 1969-1970 might also qualify.
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=GQFIAAAAIBAJ&sjid=U_8MAAAAIBAJ&pg=6069%2C6026267

You really have quite a task in here . If I have too much spare time like now, I might do some researsching and PM you if I find something. Like I said I like this kind of puzzles :)

I did bit of more searching. Basically just quick searches using related words to find some leads. So nothing systematic. I guess its better to send here if someone can remember these.

To Kings backup question I found an article from Jan 11, 1974 with states
The kings have called up goalie Steve Rexe from their Springfield farm club to replace Gary Edwards sidelined with a broken finger........ At the same time the Kings sent goalie Bob Vroman back to Portland of the WHL.....

Ed Walsh with Canadiens might have been backup in early 75-76.
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=OT4pAAAAIBAJ&sjid=5WUFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3519%2C1525129

Edit. Deleted a guy who actually played in NHL

Weaker one is that Rich Sirois was called up during the playoffs in April 18, 82 by St.Louis Blues.

Then I ran out of ideas.

Claude Dufour

I wasn´t searching backups, but I may have found another one. It´s quite intresting because this happened during Canadiens Stanley Cup run.

First Charlie Hodge got injured and Gump Worsley got the starting job in the third game of playoff series against Toronto. Montreal recalled Ernie Wakely.
Ottawa Citizen - Apr 2, 1965
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=nMcyAAAAIBAJ&sjid=t-wFAAAAIBAJ&pg=1024%2C1551702

Wakely was returned to Quebec Aces for their playoff games so Montreal had to call another goalie to the fourth game.
Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph - Apr 6, 1965
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=RMYLAAAAIBAJ&sjid=mVYDAAAAIBAJ&pg=1508%2C302291

Montreal recalled Claude Dufour.
Reading Eagle - Apr 9, 1965
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=7zArAAAAIBAJ&sjid=yZkFAAAAIBAJ&pg=5310%2C4653904

Now to the fifth game they recalled Ernie Wakely back because Aces was dropped from playoffs.Wakely got his name engraved to Cup without actually playing a single game.
The Spokesman-Review - Apr 10, 1965
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=CjhWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=segDAAAAIBAJ&pg=1550%2C2917332

Now I´m not 100% sure did the backup goalie rule come to use in 64-65 playoffs so I´m not sure did Dufour dress to that fourth game.

Claude Dufour was WHL first team all star goalie in 63 and same in AHL in 66. Early in the 66-67 he had career ending injury. He got puck to his eye in practice which caused detached retina. I guess he could have been one of those goalies who got chance in NHL after expansion.

Who would be considered the best, or most distinguished, of all those goalies?

Stefan Liv for example had quite a distinguished SEL career and was league MVP one year. He was on the 2006 Olympics & World Championships gold medal teams, as a backup [Worlds] or third goalie [Olympics]. Markus Ketterer was also really good in Finland, was starter goalie for Finland in the 91 & 92 Worlds, and on Canada Cup & Olympic teams as a backup.

Great stuff! This articles and some accomplishments in other leauges really show how "unfair" this position is. The right time, having a bad/good game... Many small things can make or brake a career real fast. Or slow...

Really surprised Ari Ahonen never got a match. Quite the revered prospect and many seasons i the AHL. Even with Brodeur ahead the Devils strikes me as the kind of franchise that would reward him for all those seasons in the minors.

---------

Different note: Would that Dave Elenbaas has a fight in a NHL game with 0 seconds play actually mean Kellan Lains fastest to fight from start of career, two seconds, is actually not a record. One could of course argue Elenbaas didn´t have a career

Who would be considered the best, or most distinguished, of all those goalies?

Stefan Liv... Markus Ketterer...

Good picks and quite similar players. Both having been great players in their domestic leagues (with some great PO-perfomances...) and on their national teams. Liv with quite more accomplishments in his leauge while Ketterer got to be the guy a few times on the national team, something Liv never got.
Even if it´s quite harder to first have a good Salo and then a great Lundquist ahead of him rather than Jukka Tammi. The two years Liv had a chance at the number 1 Johan Holmqvist or Jonas Gustavsson had been playing out of their minds in SEL. Once again proving that this position is damn hard to get a chance... 11 seasons on the national team for Liv and not once being the number 1...

Next to get off the list? Johan Gustafsson?

Many thanks to everyone for the help!

Here's an update;

The following goalies have been added to my list, and site, since I first posted:

John Gibson
Scott Munroe
Boris Rousson
Zach Sikich
Olie Sundstrom
Brett Willows

I also found an old program that lists Claude Hardy on the Los Angeles Kings roster November 1, 1969. This conclusive evidence means I'll be adding him to the list. I do believe, however, that he was likely backup for 22 games that season (Oct 11 to Dec 6).

The following I'm working on and are listed in my book as 'possible backups but lack sufficient evidence.'

Steve Rexe - Los Angeles Kings 1974
Ed Walsh - Montreal Canadiens 1975
Greg Moffett - Montreal Canadiens 1983
Yannick Degrace - Philadelphia Flyers 1991
Luc Gunete - Quebec Nordiques 1985
David Schill - Toronto Maple Leafs
Bob Vroman - Los Angeles Kings 1974

I know that the NHL changed the rules for the 1965/66 season to make it mandatory that all teams dress 2 goalies. Since this occurred so close to that rule change i find it very plausible that Dufour dressed in a game. Are there any hockey historians around who knows for sure when backup goalies started to dress in games?

Thanks!

I'm not entirely sure but I think former Flint General Bob Perani was among this group of goalies.

At the very beginning of the Kings' inaugural season Terry Sawchuk hurt his elbow in practice, and he didn't suit up for their first few games. Wayne Rutledge played the games, and I believe Perani may have been the one on the bench based on a summary of the game between the Kings and Seals on the 18th of October, from the Montreal Gazette: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=wKYtAAAAIBAJ&sjid=u58FAAAAIBAJ&pg=6702,4065190 (see p. 29) Perani is listed as one of the Kings goalies.

Perani had been in Kings camp that autumn, and Jacques Caron and George Wood were playing in Springfield at the time.

Almost forgot this. I was searching other thing and found transaction news about Rangers recalling Mario Proulx as injury replacement for Hanlon in 1985. Don´t know if he actually dressed to any games.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=L7lPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=nlEDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6619%2C173832

Finally a new backup that I can confirm with some certainty. It seems Vanbiesbrouch came down with a case of the flu and Mario Proulx dressed as the backup.

The game summary:
http://www.nytimes.com/1985/01/03/sports/rangers-win-impressively.html

"Mario Proulx was called up on an emergency basis to be the backup goaltender."

Thanks,

Jay
