Not surprising, USA hockey has been on the rise for years. With a population of over 300 million, all you need is a fraction of your kids to get into hockey and you're going to build a powerhouse in the sport.

I do worry, though, that hard economic times in the US will see a dip happening soon, undoing the positive trends in the last 15 years. Hockey is quite expensive relative to many sports and still only popular in specific pockets of the country.

Detroit moved up in the 3rd round to select Turgeron. In doing so, they gave up their 3rd rounder next year. They said that they had him graded out in the 2nd round and wanted to move in to get him while he was still available.

No I get it, the value was just atrocious :shakehead

18-20 = 2nd rounder
63-65 = 3rd rounder?

we could have waited 2 spots in the 3rd round and kept our 76

sure. its just an example to show how awful that trade was. the pick one spot earlier was moved for 2 fourth rounders. would sj not have made that trade with us if we tried?

we got the later pick for two 3rds...holland just throwing more valuable picks away in a panic

You've used the words "atrocious" and "awful" to describe moving up in the 3rd round. They got the player they wanted.

You're talking about swapping picks in rounds that rarely yield players of impact.

right, relative to other pick-pick trades made in the last few yrs this one is terrible. its obviously unlikely to set the franchise back in any way

value wise a fair deal (according to past trades) would have been next years 3rd and a 6th max. not sure why you seem to think a 2015 3rd round pick is such a marginal loss while the wings went into panic mode to pick a 3rd round pick up this year.

basically, it's not uncommon for 1 guy you have in the top 30 to be available between 60-90. its going to happen next year again, no need to panic and waste good assets. Now we won't have a 60-90 pick next year at all to work with when we could have lost a 120-150 and it would have been worse than trades made with picks +/- 5 of the one we bought.

If some of you expect that all these new prospects will pan out you are obviously going to be disappointed. They hope at least one of these guys ends up being a third line (at best second line) center. If by some miracle they develop into a top line center, then that is a successful draft. A long shot, I know, but when you are drafting 15th overall and then in later rounds, you are unlikely getting a top line forward or top pairing defenseman.
