    TIL: Kotkaniemi means Eagle Peninsula.

    I’m sold.

The Sharks have a prospect named Jayden Halbgewachs. His last name is German for "half awake."

    12-15.

I really have come around to Dobson since watching that combine video you posted and some youtube videos (I need to watch a whole game or shift by shift video). Main reasons are that he is RHD and has a very appetizing all around game and size. His shot release is erratic, and powerful, his outlet passes already look NHL ready. I think he is the safest bet in becoming a top pairing defenseman in 3-4 years outside Dahlin. His game is in the same mold of a Pietrangelo/Hamilton rather than a Subban/OEL. I see Bouchard being more of a McDonagh/Giordano and Hughes with that Josi/Ellis potential, but with size concerns. I really think having a top all around guy on the right side could complement Chychrun when OEL starts to pass his prime, allowing Chychrun to play a similar game to Hedman. We are one of the few bottom ten teams that has the luxury of waiting 3+ years for Dobsons development, another reason why he edges out Bouchard on my list.

Kotkaniemi really reminds me of Monahan, where he really knows how to clean up garbage around the goal and plays a north-south game like a power forward, but has much more flash in distributing the puck like Seguin. He is a long player as far as size, reach, vision and the amount of time he takes to finish plays (because he can muscle off opponents and slide through gaps). His skating has room to improve, not because he is slow but because his posture is reminiscent of Lucic's. It doesn't look like he has spent much time on working on his form, which is very different than Strome's issues. His stats make him look like a center that falls to the 12-15 range that ends of up a 1C because the raw skill (typical high ceiling/low floor) but because of the lack of centers in the draft he could easily go 3rd overall and still be the 3rd best player in this draft.

Wahlstrom went from my 4OA to 8 because of position. I truly think all 5 of the top defensemen could become top pairing guys on their teams, and it is really hard for me to put a RW ahead of that. I think Wahlstrom has that 30 goal potential. He has Kreider/Patches written all over him. I think Perlini has the same potential still.

These are my drunken Wednesday night thoughts.

I like the Monahan comp on Kotkaniemi. I see some similarities there. Not sure Eagle Peninsula has Monahan’s shot and he’ll likely never be as powerful, but there are similarities. Maybe if you combine Monahan and Stepan, you get Kotkaniemi.

Yeah you are probably right about Kotkaniemi's top end strength, and Stepan's playmaking is probably a much better comparable than Seguin's, haha. I'm making Kotkaniemi sound like the next coming of Kopitar, where he is probably closer to a ceiling of prime Little.

    Notes from Bob McKenzie's podcast

    Jokke Nevalainen (@JokkeNevalainen) | Twitter

    1) Some players don't crack the consensus Top 93 even though they're ranked late 1st / early 2nd by one or two teams but aren't in the Top 90 by others.

    2) Svechnikov consensus #2 prospect now.

    3) Multiple scouts have Zadina falling out of their top 5.

    4) Kotkaniemi got multiple top 5 votes, Dobson as well.

    5) Hayton and Kravtsov got a top 5 vote as well. Sounds like they're going to be top 12 guys on his list.

    6) Kotkaniemi at #3 to Montreal isn't considered a reach anymore. Sounds like he's going to be high on the final consensus list.

    7) Dobson is the 2nd highest ranked defenseman which probably means he's top 5. Has overtaken Bouchard and Boqvist since the last ranking.

    8) Boqvist is ranked behind Dobson, Bouchard and Hughes, meaning he's likely somewhere around #9 or #10.

    9) Merkley is ranked anywhere from #16 to #60. The teams that have him in their top 25 are not sure they'd actually take him that high.

So based on what was said on #Bobcast, sounds like it's Zadina, Dobson, Kotkaniemi and Tkachuk from #3 to #6 in some order, and after that it's probably Bouchard, Hughes, Wahlstrom and Boqvist rounding out the top 10. Kravtsov and Hayton could be after that

    Seems very possible.

You figure Kotkaniemi to the Habs and Dobson to the Sens?

Still don’t get why Tkachuk continues to rate so high but hey, they are professionals. What do I know

TBH I wasn't blown away from the shift by shift I saw of Zadina, but I trust our scouts and the hockey world that has him ranked #3 way more than I trust my own ability to judge prospects (or lack thereof). Also 3 games worth of shifts isn't very much context.

What are we missing with kotkaniemi?

Edit: Saw Mosby already posted. Whalstrom? Zdina? Kotkaniemi?

He is a center. And the only center in this draft that looks like he could potentially be a top line one, but is still probably more likely of being a very good 2C. I don't see the same upside as Petersson (as an example of another late riser from last season) but more along the lines of Andersson.

They cited our history of drafting from OHL yet last year we went with a largely unheralded Q D. I think we can safely infer its a CHL D.

Does any of the recent trades make anyone think that D is now a little higher on the board?

Hickey - we kind of knew wasn't going to be with us and my guess is that Wood simply didn't fit the system as much anymore, along with the lack of footspeed, remembering that he was one of those dark horses to be our 7th D this year.

The fact that we didn't really pick up a D almost makes me lean toward the idea that we are looking to get a little more high end talent on D in the pipeline, and these trades maybe paved the way for that.

I would think that Bouchard or Dobson would be very high on our list, if these trades at the AHL level portend what may happen at the draft. :dunno:

One reason why Bouchard and Dobson are harder to swallow is the fact that they won't be able to go to Tucson for two more seasons. Could the Wood move just mean we are making room for Dineen/Westlund and the like?

What other prospects are graduating to Tucson by the way?
