It's as if I wrote that but switch out wife for "current girlfriend." A few years ago my buddy (Habs fan) and I planned on watching the draft together and his idea was to go eat wings and let the DVR record the draft and we'd watch it after we ate. Fair enough until we got to his house and he controlled the remote and fast forwarded through each selection until Montreal, Arizona and the Wild (my other team) drafted. Not cool! The NHL draft and the lottery are the two times each year I need to be left alone.

Heh, my rep just called me about that, mere hours after I started considering a last minute trip to Florida for my *cough*th HS reunion, on the same day...

The Republic's new Yotes insider Rick Morin has us taking Wahlstrom in his mock.

Smart kid. Would be psyched for Wahlstom. Literally can't even imagine fathoming who we're picking at this point, just so many things that can happen.

It was 2007. Patrick Kane went #1. The Coyotes selected Turris at #3. Also the year Alexei Cherepanov and Angelo Esposito dropped pretty far. I missed a good one.

In my youth we used to go a drink a pick in first round. Was fine when t was 10-15 mins between selections.

Got absurd in Crosby draft when they limited t to 5 mins between picks. It got ugly.

Headed to the draft for the first time this year. Really hoping we move up to take Zadina or Tkachuk, reason being is that I would like someone a little more NHL ready than one of the D-man speculated in the 5 range. I think this team is getting closer and closer to putting it all together and I think a piece like Zadina or Tkachuk can help push this team over the hump in the next year or two.

Bit unusual to see Tkachuk to Montreal. I really hope Montreal or Ottawa takes him. Don't want the Yotes to consider him at #5.

I think we need to keep Domi but getting Zadina would be great. I wonder if Domi is happy here. Pacioretti needs a new team. He's beyond his shelf life in Montreal. I dont think Montreal would consider this deal though.

I'm in line with the call their bluff strategy if that's the price. If Ottawa takes him then so be it.

Definitely curious who went #3 and #4 then. Kotkaniemi and Tkachuk, or did someone like a D?

Interestingly Kotkaniemi went #10 in the underway mod mock draft, exactly where Bob’s scouting consensus ranked him.

For the draftniks, how do you rate ceilings on the 4 Dmen after Dahlin?

The feeling I’ve gotten from reading various scouting reports seems to break down in simplest terms to:

Boqvist - skating and offensive talent, concussion concerns, needs to work on D. 1st pairing potential, could end up 2nd pairing PP specialist. Mild bust potential

Bouchard - good at both ends, highly probable 2nd pairing D floor, unlikely 1st pairing offensive upside, low bust potential.

Dobson - good at both ends, highly probable 2nd pairing D floor, slightly higher 1st pairing offensive potential then Bouchard, low bust potential.

Hughes - skating and offensive talent, size and D concerns. 1st pairing potential, could end up 2nd pairing PP specialist like Boqvist, mild bust potential.

Is that a fair shorthanded assessment or am I missing some key details.

*Note: when I say “bust potential” I mean not reaching the floor of being a second pairing Dman, not a completely out of the league bust.

I would not say that Dobson's offensive upside is higher than Bouchard's. I would say that Bouchard's offensive upside is way, way ahead of Dobson's.

    My ranking with quick notes:
Hughes: Amazing skater. Best skater in this draft. Best skater in the last draft, too. Very, very smart player. Tiny and weak. Shot needs work.

Bouchard: Complete offensive threat. Tremendous arsenal of offensive weapons. Amazing stretch pass. Mobility issues. Lack of urgency in his game. Looks a little slow out there.

Dobson: So big and so fast. Tremendous all-compass mobility and physical upside off the charts, with his frame. He's scrawny and weak and plays a soft game. Needs to work on decision making.

Boqvist: Great skater with an amazing shot. Ton of offensive potential. Maybe the most of the bunch due to skating/shot combo. Concussion issues. Plays like a chicken with his head cut-off. Needs so much coaching. So much.

Thanks. So it looks like my major error is Bouchard’s offensive game/upside. Was aware of the skating questions with him.

Yeah, I’d agree with everything you said except I think Bouchard’s offensive upside is higher than Dobson’s. That’s all.

I believe that Bouchard scored fairly well in the skating drills at the top prospects game. Edit. Found list. See below. Bouchard did well in one skating drill but as a whole this appears to be more ammunition for the raw upside of Dobson.

    30M Forward Skate:
1 – Serron Noel (Oshawa Generals)
2 – Dmitry Zavgorodniy (Rimouski Oceanic)
3 – Liam Foudy (London Knights)
    30M Forward Skate with Puck:
1 – Ty Smith (Spokane Chiefs)
2 – Liam Foudy (London Knights)
    3 – Noah Dobson (Acadie-Bathurst Titan)
    30M Backward Skate:
    1 – Noah Dobson (Acadie-Bathurst Titan)
2 – Evan Bouchard (London Knights)
3 – Xavier Bernard (Drummondville Voltigeurs)
    30M Backward Skate with Puck:
    1 – Noah Dobson (Acadie-Bathurst Titan)
2 – Ty Smith (Spokane Chiefs)
3 – Liam Foudy (London Knights)
    Reaction:
1 – Barrett Hayton (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds)
2 – Allan McShane (Oshawa Generals)
3 – Nico Gross (Oshawa Generals)
    Reaction with Puck:
1 – Liam Foudy (London Knights)
2 – Vladislav Kotkov (Chicoutimi Sagueneens)
3 – Ty Smith (Spokane Chiefs)
    Weave Agility:
1 – Andrei Svechnikov (Barrie Colts)
2 – Dmitry Zavgorodniy (Rimouski Oceanic)

How does everyone feel if we announce Dobson's name at 5? Personally I think he's more of a development pick but the raw upside is there. Big RD who can play in both ends in a top 2-4 capacity for 10+ years? I think I could live with that.

The team needs O in a big way but if the scouts deem Dobson as BPA then I am OK with that. A bit surprised but OK.
