All focus continues to be on Boston filling the Providence roster up as well as the 4th line. We're hoping this is to accommodate a trade before the NHL shuts down.

They can't really do anything else right now. Free agency begins for the Bruins when McAvoy signs and/or Backes gets moved. It's going to be a pretty boring off-season until either of those things happen.

If Carolina doesn’t match, that would leave a big hole at C. Opening for a Krejci trade?
But then there's a hole at C for the Bruins. In a B's-Canes deal centered around Krejci and Aho (more going to the Canes of course), the Bruins would have gotten younger and would have found their future #1C, and the Canes would still remain competitive with Krejci and other young NHL-ready assets.

If the Canes don't match the offersheet and want to trade for Krejci, I don't really see anything on that team that would be available that would be worth the loss of Krejci.

If the Canes match, this is all moot.

They can be over the cap as Dom pointed out to almost 23 million. Some of that was eaten up today but McAvoy and Carlo should be done before the summer as well.

@RussellmaniaKW - I don't know about that. Coyle has said several times how much he loves playing for his home town team, he might be persuaded to take less money if that will keep him here.

The problem is certainly around deciding value. Guys with his regular season numbers are getting $3m per year. Guys with his playoff numbers are getting +$6m. That's a tough gap to bridge.

Can’t Carolina just sit on that offer sheet for a few days and Montreal can’t use the cap space they have allocated to Aho....?

Correct. A week to match.

TSN reporting that teams with other high-priced RFA's would be calling Carolina and saying 'wait a week please so Montreal cannot toss this at our RFA.'

Yes, if he plays like he did in this year's playoffs the next time the Bruins are in the playoffs that might make keeping him tougher. We'll have to see how he does.

I believe any team can go over the ceiling......until a certain date before the start of the regular season.

Lol Waddell. We intend on having Aho long term.Shocked by offer sheet and that it was not more Might wait through week to match so habs cannot add help why they wait

He is hoping that the 21 million dollars paid out in the next 12 months is something Carolina doesn't want to do.

With the smurfs
The Canes were fighting for the playoffs with the Habs last year. Zero chance they let their best player go to that rival with only picks in return?

Canes GM would be smart to say his decision last hour in 1 week to screw out Habs plans with other possible UFA.

And they’ll stay the 5th best team in division and miss playoffs for a 3rd straight season.
