My guess right now is the Bruins are basically standing pat for the off-season. They'll find a way to squeeze extensions in for their 3 key RFAs (McAvoy, Carlo, and Heinen), potentially all on bridge deals as their cap space for opening night looks pretty tight.
We really don't know the health status of Backes, Moore, and Miller. Moore we assume won't be ready to start the season. At some point I expect this team to shed a veteran player making 2 million AAV or more for roster space and cap space, but we may not see that move until November-ish if/when everyone is healthy. Similar to when they moved Sturm in Nov. 2010 when Savvy was activated.
They'll go into camp and let the young players like Kuhlman/Clifton/Senyshyn/Bjork/Lauzon/Vaak/etc. battle with the veteran guys on the fringe (Lindholm/Backes/Ritchie/Kampfer/etc.) for one of the 23 roster spots. Some folks may not like it but the upgrade to start the year will likely have to come from within. Sweeney will address short-comings at the deadline or in-season if necessary.
Seems like a good place to sign off for the summer. It was a wild ride this past season. Even if the end result wasn't what we all wanted, it was a tremendously successful season of Bruins hockey.
Enjoy the summer folks, see you in September!
When did Mojo say that he didnt want to stay? All that I read was that he liked here and wanted to work something out.
My point of view is that it is very arrogant from Sweeney to think everything will be fine with internal competition. There is a glaring hole in Krejci's right side and even Jake on the other one is to streaky. If it doesnt work then you have to pay deep prices at the trade deadline again? To not even speak with Mojo who played great here is a big minus for me.
And if you think about it, he did go basement shopping at the deadline too. It just happened that Mojo played very well in the playoffs. He was an injury risk so most didn’t want to waste assets on it.
The best trade so far was the Coyle trade and I give him that. It was a need that’s filled. Let the guys battle for the lower lines but get some in the top 6
I look forward to everyone's "where were you July 4th 2013" stories today
In car with family going to a parade. Remember checking my phone and seeing it. Actually didn't think it was too bad at the time.
Sweeney isn’t going to tell anyone what he’s doing. People need to understand that GMs are constantly playing poker, so to speak. For all we know he has something brewing. There are plenty of FA left. He has plenty to do in that he had to take care of his house before shopping. I don’t see the arrogance in his statement at all. This team just made it to one game of the Stanley Cup, how much can he change? I’m sure he saw Chiarellis mistakes in falling in love with players. If anything, he has shown that he is growing as a GM. Let’s give the guy some credit instead of this “GM of the year” joke.
Internal competition for a top six RW only exists if you believe the prospect pool contains multiple top six options; right now it'll be tough to find one. Oh, and another 3rd line RW as well. Someone must believe in some massive steps forward and hidden breakouts.
I like his thought process. Maybe a guy steps up in preseason/camp and you don't have to waste an asset at all. At worse we go shopping at the deadline or before the deadline to fill that hole, just like this season.
I truthfully haven't seen Seny play enough, but if he is as fast as people are saying then maybe they believe he can use that speed in a 3rd line role. We also have Kuhlman who I think is probably the guy to start on the 3rd or 2nd line as we stand right now. Or potentially they throw Heinen up to the 1st line to start the year and go with young wingers for Coyle.
Internal competition is a must if a team is going to continue having success. You can’t fill a little one up on FA’s only. It’s a balance that we keep talking about. It just seems people just want to get the thrill of a FA signing and aren’t looking at everything that it affects.
How Will Bruins Replace Marcus Johansson? Don Sweeney Lists Possibilities
The season when hockey fans desperately claw through news in a desperate attempt to find anything new relevant to their favorite team.
Don’t worry, Sweeney isn’t going to tip his hand before he sends Marner or Laine an offer sheet. Once Carlo is locked up he’ll make his move.
So marner can get 9
If there was a team to offer sheet, it would be the Leafs right now. Could they fit Marner in at 10.25M? Even after trading Nylander they wouldn’t have room.
yep. i'd low-key wanted Eriksson for years. Wasn't thrilled with it, but didn't out and out hate it at the time. Was definitely mad that they didn't get any picks out of it, same as the Thornton trade. 3 nickels for a quarter is a bad deal. 3 nickels AND a scratch off for a quarter is probably still going to be a bad deal, but at least has potential to be great
Horton is 5.3m according to capfriendly.
They also have as many as 6 players on the roster they can send down, freeing up as much as another ~5 mill.
So, they are fine.
@LouJersey with them. Mwahahahaha.
@Mainehockey33 maybe not us but would love to see leafs best player get a huge offersheet
Maybe but playing with 18 players would be a bold move
Damn. It probably would be better to go after Laine or Conner.
I was just going to say I'd like to screw the leafs by offer sheeting Marner at 12 or 13M, but when they don't sign it we'll be the ones getting screwed.
Currently against the Toronto Capfriendly cap hit are:
Half of these guys will not make the team out of training camp. That would free up an extra 2 million. Combined with Horton(5.3) and the 3.7 they have in space now that gives them around 11 million to sign Marner. Which is what they expect to sign him at. If it needs more they can send down another guy or move one cap contract for wiggle room.
Not a stressful situation for Dubas. Unless someone offersheets him for 13 million, which would be crazy. In that case they have to move a contract and I am sure people will be salivating over who gets sacrified on the trade block for cheap. Don't think that happens though.
