LeBrun Notebook: Agent JP Barry blasts the ‘code’ after...

Paywall. Also, LeBrun looks at "the code" and asks if the "rules" should change.

If I guy gets suspended by DoPS and apologizes, takes responsibility for his actions, is it right **two months later** to have bigger enforcer ask to dance? (And KOs him with punch)

nothing wrong with the player injured by the dirty hit getting his own retribution on the ice. It's not like some useless enforcer grabbed Byron and started throwing in defense of a teammate. this was a fight with the player he injured. It's comeupance

if the league really cared about concussions, they'd give out more than 1-2 games for a hit like Byron's.

Change to concussion subcommittee the latest signal in...

Paywall. Strang looks at the membership of the concussion joint committee. Neurologist added at ASG meeting.

As it stands, the NHL/NHLPA Concussion Subcommittee is currently comprised of the following members: two neuropsychologists (who serve as co-chairs), a rotation of one of three team physicians, a rotation of one of two assistant coaches, two legal representatives from the NHLPA, one legal representative from the NHL, a representative from each the NHL and NHLPA in the Joint Health and Safety Committee (each serve as co-chair of this oversight committee), a rotation of one of four team athletic trainers, one NHLPA divisional representative, one NHL general manager, and, as of January, one neurologist.

There have been some issues of territory as well as lack of experience of working with pro athletes in concussions. And the legal elephant in the room.

New book out: Brainwashed by Merril Hoge et al

Local TV station had author as guest on their afternoon program.

Very controversial. But sounds like Bettman has taken a lot of his talking points from the book.

WRT CTE... while 110 of the 111 brains of football players in one study found signs of CTE, more than half have a secondary brain disease/disorder as well. And that 110 is out of 27k players. 100+ cases of CTE of non-athletes with no history of concussions.

To quote:

"To downplay the dangers of CTE like Hoge and Cummings have is, at best, extremely ignorant.

At worst, it’s blatant propaganda on behalf of the NFL.

But Hoge should know this better than anyone, as his own career was cut short due to brain damage from repeated concussions. He spent 48 hours in the ICU and had to be resuscitated when he stopped breathing after suffering his second concussion in several weeks. He was forced to re-learn to read and suffered from memory loss."

Arizona researchers attempt to detect CTE in living former NFL players

To quote:

"A national team of researchers, including representatives from Arizona State University, Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Phoenix, published the results of a CTE study last week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The researchers used experimental positron emission tomography (PET) scans in an attempt to detect a brain abnormality — the accumulation of abnormal tau protein — associated with CTE in 26 living former NFL players experiencing the disease’s behavioral symptoms.

“We found small but significant elevations in this abnormal protein tau that has been reported after life in NFL players,” [Executive Director of Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in Phoenix, Eric] Reiman said. "

Widow of former NHLer Todd Ewen files lawsuit against league

To quote:

"Kelli Ewen, the widow of former NHL enforcer Todd Ewen, is suing the league for allegedly profiting off of a culture of violence and continuing to downplay the potential long-term consequences of repeated brain trauma.

Ewen’s lawsuit was filed in California district court on April 30, a day before NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is scheduled to testify in Ottawa before a federal government hearing on concussions in sports.

A copy of the lawsuit says Ewen is seeking “compensatory damages and all other damages permitted by law.”

Todd was posthumously diagnosed with the brain-withering disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, in 2018 by a Boston University neuropathologist – a development that contradicted the findings of a Toronto neuropathologist, who three years ago announced he didn’t have the disease."

Settlement is a go:

The National Hockey League has reached settlements in its concussion litigation with at least 137 former players including Joe Murphy, Bernie Nicholls and Gary Leeman, court records show.
There were 318 former players, including 146 named plaintiffs, who were eligible for a settlement.
Others who have accepted settlements include Reed Larson, Dan LaCouture, Kevin Stevens, Chris Simon and Guillaume Latendresse.
Players who accept the settlement will receive at least $22,000 (U.S.). The league also agreed to fund neuropsychological testing and reimburse up to $75,000 in medical treatment expenses for players who qualify.
....
Another 172 former NHL players who retained lawyers to pursue a claim against the league but didn’t file a case in court are also eligible for settlements. It's unlikely their identities will be made public, Cashman said.
....
The league chose not to exercise its right to walk away from a settlement if 100 per cent of eligible players didn’t accept the terms of the deal.

Surprised this isn't being talked more especially as NHL bosses appeared in front of Canadian concussion commission recently.

AP/CP survey: Players say NHL making progress on concussions

AP/CP poll of NHLPA reps
The NHL last fall settled a lawsuit with retired players who sued the league and accused it of failing to protect them from head injuries or warning them of the risks involved with playing. Yet progress has been made to the point that almost half of current NHL Players' Association representatives surveyed by The Associated Press and Canadian Press said they believe the league is doing all it can to protect players from concussions.

Fifteen of the 31 player reps said the league is doing what it can. The other 16 were noncommittal.

Progress, but not totally "there."
