Hello from the NYR Boards. Life without hockey's been somewhat less than fun lately, as I'm sure you're all aware, so I decided to do something to pass the time. Namely, an All-Time draft. The rules of such a draft are as follows:

1. Every team gets a single pick, and the draft order follows the standings as of 3/20/2020 (the first day of the draft), which will be posted in a follow-up post in the thread below. So even if a team traded its 1st Round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, they still get a choice in this draft.
2. All retired/inactive NHL players are considered eligible for this draft (including guys playing overseas like Jagr). This also includes players like Tretiak who never had an NHL career but are hockey legends in their own right. All active NHL players, as well as players whose rights are owned by an NHL team, are ineligible
3. It is assumed that player abilities are "up-to-date" with the modern game, so a player like Eddie Shore who played in a far different NHL will not be at a disadvantage compared to say Wayne Gretzky or Jaromir Jagr
4. All players will be drafted into the organization at the age of 18, similar to the NHL Entry Draft
5. It is assumed that players will have a similar ceiling to during their playing career, and have the ability to reach said ceiling, although this is not guaranteed. Similarly, they are not guaranteed to suffer the same injury woes they did during their career (should that be relevant)
6. I'll give 2-3 days for votes to come in before the next team goes on the clock.
7. In the event of a tie, I will set up a tiebreaker poll
8. Consider how a player might fit into your organization and team in the now & in the future when drafting them.

Boston, you are now on the clock with the 31st pick in the 2020 NHL All-Time Draft!

I'll update this comment as each new vote comes in, but I can only count it if it's a single player vote (so not "Shore or Harvey" for example). If you're changing your vote later on, that's fine, just make a note of it.

Marc Savard (1)- Mainehockey33
Neely (2)- Dicky113, Number 8
Dionne (1)- Gator Mike
Trottier (1)- Gordon Lightfoot
Frank Nighbor (1)- Trap Jesus
Morenz (2)- smitty93, Wiggleboom
Mikita (1)- missingchicklet
Sawchuk (1)- BruinDust

In my personal opinion, Morenz is the best guy still on the board.

Other notables: Dionne, Oates, Fedorov, Plante, Selanne, Sawchuk, MacInnis, Chelios, Robinson, Stevens, Park, Mikita, Leetch, Coffey, Iginla, Trottier, Brett Hull, Shanahan, Murphy, Lindsay, Tretiak, Neely, Red Kelly

Mr. Make-Believe

The happy genius of my household
I’m actually going to make a case for Chara.

I know I know. I’m a homer.

But as a cornerstone leader, offensive contributor while being one of the most dominant defensive players of all time... Really what he’s done for the culture of the room since he’s been in Boston and what a unique presence he is in the history of the game?

Plus I’m not building around a winger.

Chara gets my vote here.

My votes in order would be:

Frank Nighbor - First Hart Trophy winner while being the Patrice Bergeron of the 1920s for defensive play.

Howie Morenz- It would feel dirty to take a Hab but he'd be ridiculous value at 31.

Stan Mikita/Bryan Trottier - They're essentially equal in my view. Both are great all-around centers.

Just think though, if you're taking the Hab, that means they can't if this goes for a second round

It's between Sawchuk, Trottier, Morenz, and Mikita for me. I was initially leaning Morenz, but I think Mikita would be the better player to build a Bs team around. Dude was a playoff beast and was awesome year after year, not to mention could get really nasty if need be. My vote goes to Mikita.

Wasn't alive for any of them, but I think I'm between Morenz, Mikita, and Dionne.

I hate to pick a Hab, but the value's too good. I'm going Morenz.

I'll probably give this another day or 2, seeing as there's absolutely nothing resembling a consensus

Terry Sawchuk seems to me to be the biggest omission thus far, so I'll go with him. Arguably the greatest goaltender of all-time and not yet selected. There is clearly a recency bias to the selections thus far, lots of 90s stars (Sakic/Lindros/Bure/Forsberg/Jagr). Not much from the pre-expansion era especially.
