Hello again from the NYR Boards. Due to requests from multiple posters across the boards, I've decided to continue the All Time draft into a second round. The rules for this draft are as follows, if you did not remember:

1. Every team gets a single pick in the round, and the draft order follows the standings as of 3/20/2020 (the first day of the draft). So even if a team traded its 1st Round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, they still get a choice in this draft.
2. All retired/inactive NHL players are considered eligible for this draft (including guys playing overseas like Jagr). This also includes players like Tretiak who never had an NHL career but are hockey legends in their own right. All active NHL players, as well as players whose rights are owned by an NHL team, are ineligible
3. It is assumed that player abilities are "up-to-date" with the modern game, so a player like Eddie Shore who played in a far different NHL will not be at a disadvantage compared to say Wayne Gretzky or Jaromir Jagr
4. All players will be drafted into the organization at the age of 18, similar to the NHL Entry Draft
5. It is assumed that players will have a similar ceiling to during their playing career, and have the ability to reach said ceiling, although this is not guaranteed. Similarly, they are not guaranteed to suffer the same injury woes they did during their career (should that be relevant)
6. I'll give 2-3 days for votes to come in before the next team goes on the clock.
7. In the event of a tie, I will set up a tiebreaker poll
8. Please check the below post before voting for a player, as it's possible they have already been taken. And remember again, active players are ineligible.
9. If you are trolling, I will ignore your vote. Don't be that guy.

This really comes down to Fetisov vs Makarov. I’ll choose the D over the RW when it’s that close, so give me one Viacheslav Fetisov to go, please. Picking up a top 5-7ish Defenseman of All Time this late is absurd value.

I could see preferring Frank Nighbor, but going back that far is a much messier projection and they all should be on a similar top 20-25ish All-Time tier anyway.

Voting:
I'll update this comment as each new vote comes in, but I can only count it if it's a single player vote (so not "Shore or Harvey" for example). If you're changing your vote later on, that's fine, just make a note of it. I apologize in advance if I am delayed in adding your vote, I am now working full-time so have much less free time on my hands

Slava Fetisov (7)- JojoTheWhale, FlyTimmo, Captain Dave Poulin, Appleyard, WeHaveBeenFletched, pit, CanadianFlyer88

Yeah, Fetisov and Nighbor are my top 2 on the board right now

Fetisov

I once tried to buy Slava a vodka tonic when they were in town to play the Blues. I knew they would be at this downtown club, because away teams almost always were. Problem is that I was already too hammered to speak. I saw Sean Burke and tried to say "Where's Slava?" which I am sure came out "Wuh slobber?" He just stared at me with that Sean Burke death ray of hate and I eventually wandered off and forgot about all of it.

Hard to pass on Kharlamov, but I'm going to want to build that D, so Fetisov for me.

Another vote for Fetisov. I would take Fetisov over everyone selected after the Rangers in round 2, even with my love of Tretiak.

Good job by the Kings and Canucks in this draft.

No love for Salming, Blake, or Langway if we are going defense??

Orr
Lidstrom
Harvey
Bourque
Shore

are the only Dmen above Fetisov clearly in my eyes. Potvin on similar level. Robinson and Kelly too.

Then a group of Park, Clancy, Chelios, Pronger, Pilote, Horton, MacInnis... and a couple of others. Then Salming after.

I dont think Blake or Langway are top 30 all time. Blake might not be top 50 as much as I like him.

Park is probably the only other Dman I consider here.

I couldn’t give Fetisov the nod over Park. Park played his entire career in the NHL, whereas Fetisov played in the NHL from ages 31-39 when he was past his peak & solid but not special.

There’s no doubt Fetisov had a storied international history & Russian career, but it’s impossible to know for certain how he would have translated to the NHL game. Some players destroy in Europe & international hockey without having the same dominance in the NHL. Especially in the more physical NHL of the past.

Fetisov very likely would have been excellent had he played in the NHL earlier, but we know for a fact that Park was over a long career. 6 times coming 2nd in Norris voting (4x to Orr, 2x to Potvin). 3x 5th in Hart voting. Retired as the NHL career assists leader for defensemen.
