NHL, AHL extend officiating agreement

From press release

The American Hockey League today announced a new four-year officiating development agreement with the National Hockey League which will continue to see the AHL serve as the top development league for the NHL’s referees through 2022-23.

Under the terms of the new agreement, the NHL and AHL officiating departments will continue to work together in all aspects of recruitment, training and development of on-ice officials. There will be an increased investment in training opportunities for AHL referees and linesmen with full access to NHL training resources and personnel.

As contemplated in the recently expired agreement, the AHL now utilizes two referees in all regular-season and Calder Cup Playoff games. Moving forward, slightly over one-quarter of those assignments will be worked by NHL-contracted referees, with the balance worked by AHL-contracted referees who have been identified as top officiating prospects.

Keeping the zebra channel stocked.

What could happen, if the agreement will end a no new will be signed?

Things can continue "as is" (both sides agreeing to that).

Or they can sever arrangement (which would mean the NHL has no where to develop new zebras in NA). Perhaps having to pay "apprentice" salary to new guys learning the ropes (from the rafters or something).

ISN'T IT THE same union, LS, for both the AHL/ECHL since referees are also developed in that league on their way up, just like the players/coaches/executives

NHLOA?

I know the PHPA represents players in the AHL and ECHL.

Haven't investigated/looked for officials union for AHL and/or ECHL......

NHLOA -- About NHLOA

All members are active Officials under contract to the NHL who are working in the NHL and designated minor leagues.

Can't find definition of "designated minor leagues"
