Do you play those preseason games or sim them? I've always just simmed through preseason, or play one game with the minor league lineup to see if I like a player, but just curious. Maybe I should be paying more attention to this . . .
You want to sim and see who’s out there for the most goals and has a good +/- I’m taking a +5 guy for my fourth line over a 3 goal guy with a -3.

Really? I’d rather have 4 scoring lines than 2 scoring two shutdown. And I hate that plus minus is the only way to measure defense. They really need to add some advanced stats

BREAKING NEWS: Ranger GM Jeff Gorton steps down as GM citing wanting to keep his "legacy" intact
Sept. 18th, 2017
After announcing the rebuild/retool/reshape plans, and trading captain Ryan McDonagh along with J.T Miller, Rick Nash, Nick Holden and Michael Grabner; Jeff Gorton wanted to be seen as the guy who got the Rangers on the right path for great things, but not the one who ruins it with other bad decisions. In his place, rookie GM Brant King takes over. This was kind of a statement. Young, new team; young, new GM.

images
images

The New York Rangers enter the season with low hopes of making the playoffs or any type of run. They've committed to a rebuild/retool and they have 3 first round picks this year to show for it. In nets, Henrik Lundqvist is the only hope to carry this team on a run, not that anyone in the organization expects that from the soon to be 36-year old. Team captain Mats Zuccarello and assistants Marc Staal and Kevin Shattenkirk are the leadership core, and presumably for the next few years barring a shocking trade or a possible Staal buyout.

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers end November undefeated, sit 1st in NHL
Dec. 1st, 2017
The Rangers are the best team in the NHL. Who could've forseen that after they traded the players they did. There is an inevitable collapse coming, as this pace is unsustainable, but Henrik Lundqvist has acted as if he were back in 2012. Boy are the Rangers fun to watch, so enjoy it while it lasts.

BREAKING NEWS: Marc Staal requires elbow surgery, out until Trade Deadline.
Dec. 5th, 2018
To replace the oft-injured veteran, the Rangers have recalled Chris Bigras from the AHL. Staal was enjoying somewhat of a revival playign with Ryan Sproul, owning a +23 rating in 30 games.

Host: James Duthie
Trade Breaker Desk: Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger, Pierre LeBrun, and Gord Miller
Instant Analysis Panel: Ray Ferraro, Jeff O’Neill, Dave Poulin, Martin Biron, Pierre McGuire
Trade Bait: Craig Button
Deadline Panel: Jamie McLennan, Aaron Ward
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duthie: Hey folks, were here with our 2018 Edition of NHL TradeCentre, specifically highlighting the surprising Rangers. Before we get to their moves today, let's go to all of our Analysts to see what they think about this team.,

Ferraro: Let's start off with the fact that the Rangers are 40-18-5 and 3rd in the NHL. Everyone, even themselves, expected them to be a lottery team yet here they are, with possibly their best performing team since 2014-2015.

O'Neill:
Yeah Ray, you can credit this to the King. Henrik Lundqvist should win the Vezina and the Hart, no question about it. Just one week away from his 36th, the vet has lifted a young team onto his shoulders and is about to take them straight to the playoffs. Just Incredible.

Biron: You're right Jeff, Lundqvist is the best goalie in the world right now, so dialed in.

Poulin: Not to take anything away from Hank, but I think youguys are seriously discounting Mika Zibanejad right now. With 57 points in 63 games, he is leading the Rangers offensively. He's already surpassed his career highs and he has flourished as the #1 center between Kreider and Buchneivch.

McGuire: Why has no one men-

Duthie: Sorry Pierre but we've got to get back to the Trade Breakers to report the Rangers trades.

images
images

McKenzie: The Rangers have traded veteran center David Desharnais to divisional rival Carolina Hurricanes for prospect Janne Kuokkanen. Kuokkanen will center the Rangers 4th line, and brings a youthful presence to a fourth line comprised of veterans. Carolina gets the experienced center they wanted heading into the Playoff hunt.

images

Dreger: The Rangers have made another depth move, trading C Peter Holland to the Chicago Blackhawks for a 6th in '18.

images
images

LeBrun: The Rangers and Blackhawks have made another deal. The Blackhawks get Ondrej Pavelec, the top rental goalie on the market with Crawford injured, and the Rangers acquire 23-year old Vinnie Hinostroza and a 7th in 2018.

Miller: In other news around the league, the Flyers sent Wayne Simmonds and Matt Read to the wild for Matt Dumba and some picks, and the Montreal Canadiens sent prospect Nikita Scherbak to the Blues for Jay Bouwmeester.

Button: Also knocked off my Trade Bait board are defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, traded to Carolina for Aleksi Saarela and a 2nd, and James Neal, who fetched the Knights a pair of 2nd rounders from the Canucks.

Kevin Shattenkirk was a hit in his first season on Broadway. Brady Skjei is well on his way to replacing Ryan McDonagh as the teams #1 defenseman. Tony DeAngelo and Ryan Sproul stepped in and solidified the right side nicely, while veterans Marc Staal and Brendan Smith help their own on the left. Chris Bigras performed adequately in his callup, while Steven Kampfer was subpar in his cameo's.

The Good: Mika Zibanejad finally came into his own as a #1C, while Mats Zuccarello posted a new career high in points. Chris Kreider broke out in a big way for the Rangers, while his opposite wing Pavel Buchnevich excelled in his sophomore season. Vlad Namestnikov and Ryan Spooner also succeeded in their first seasons as Rangers, surpassing their previous career highs. Kevin Hayes posted a new career high in goals. Jesper Fast and Matt Beleskey both surpassed expectations in their bottom 6 roles.

The Okay: Jimmy Vesey upped his production from last season, but more was expected of him in a top-6 role. Boo Nieves couldn't get into the lineup consistently but when he did he was one of the Rangers better depth guys. Cody McLeod, had set a low bar in previous seasons, but he managed to stay out of the box and still contribute 10 points.

The Ugly: Trade Deadline acquisitions Janne Kuokkanen and Vinnie Hinostroza were both given ample opportunity to excel in a bottom-6 role as tempo guys, but failed to produce to the tune of what was expected.

The Rangers drew a matchup against the WC Senators in the 1st round of the Playoffs. The Rangers are the favorites heading into this, because of a young exciting offense and a guy named Henrik Lundqvist. They will need to find a way to shut down Erik Karlsson though, as the 2nd best Swede in the series could also wreak havoc.

2018-2019 NHL Season

Season Preview

images

In nets the best goaltender of his generation returns for yet another season. Henrik Lundqvist was dazzling last season, and although there are always warnings that father time will catch up this season, the Rangers expect nothing less of Hank. To back him up, the Rangers have tasked Jaroslav Halak with those duties. The 33-year old was a Free Agent signing this offseason.

images
images

On defense, Brady Skjei begins his new deal which comes with bigger expectations as the teams #1 D-man. Also returning are Kevin Shattenkirk, Ryan Sproul and Tony DeAngelo. Filling out the defense are rookies Chris Bigras and Neal Pionk, who are somewhat of unknowns coming into the season.

images

The Rangers have a very young, talented forward group. Familiar faces return in 11 of 14 forwards on the roster including Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, Pavel Buchnevich, Mats Zuccarello, Vlad Namestnikov, Ryan Spooner, Kevin Hayes, Jimmy Vesey,
Jesper Fast, Vinnie Hinstroza and Janne Kuokkanen. Joining them is FA signing Adrian Kempe and both of the Rangers 2017 first round picks Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil. The Rangers could use their surplus of forwards to acquire a defenseman if the currently inexperienced 3rd pair doesn't work. Cut from the team is vet Matt Beleskey, who finds himself buried in the minors and on the trading block.

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers off to incredible start, sit first in NHL
Dec. 1st, 2018
The Rangers are 17-5-3 and have are atop the NHL standings heading into the winter of 2018. Goaltending has been the savior of the team that has been
streaky offensively. Can they keep it up?

images

BREAKING NEWS: After incredible start, Rangers fall victim to a single win in December.
Jan. 1st, 2019
The Rangers were sitting pretty first overall until they got the Winter Blues, going 1-10-3 in the month of December. Lundqvist couldn't save them this time as they ran into injuries to top players in Zibanejad, Zuccarello and Shattenkirk. The rut plunged them to 5th in the Metro, and the last WC spot.

BREAKING NEWS: Halfway through season, Kempe leads Rangers in points.
Jan, 5th, 2019
The Rangers stars have struggled, but Kempe has thrived on Broadway. The young forward has 31 points (13-18-31) in 41 games this season. Kevin Hayes has struggled compared to last season, as has Chris Kreider. Henrik Lundqvist owns a .935 SV%
halfway through the season.

BREAKING NEWS: Henrik Lundqvist injured, week-to-week.
Feb. 10th, 2019
With the Rangers needing to decide if they're contenders or pretenders heading into the Trade Deadline, this could finally push the wobbly train that has been the Rangers off their tracks.

tradecentre-2017.jpg

The TRADECENTRE broadcast team:
Host: James Duthie
Trade Breaker Desk: Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger, Pierre LeBrun, and Gord Miller
Instant Analysis Panel: Ray Ferraro, Jeff O’Neill, Dave Poulin, Martin Biron, Pierre McGuire
Trade Bait: Craig Button
Deadline Panel: Jamie McLennan, Aaron Ward

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duthie: Welcome to the 2019 NHL Trade Deadline folks! I'm James Duthie, here with our Trade Breakers, Insiders and others to follow the NHL, specifically the New York Rangers. I'll send you straight to our Deadline Panel for a Recap on the Rangers to this point.

McLennan: The Rangers have been a very interesting team, almost 3 different teams in the same season. After starting off their season on a torrid pace for the second straight year, this year they hit rock bottom in December, before finding a happy medium up until now. The only constant has been Henrik Lundqvist's incredible play, but with his injury you wonder if the Rangers are going to bite the bullet here and sell.

Ward: You'd have to think that's whats going to happen here. They have to resign Pavel Buchnevich this offseason, and can't do that AND sign Mats Zuccarello. One has to go and you can already assume it's going to be the elder.

images
images

images
images
McKenzie: Sorry to interrupt guys but the Rangers have made a couple moves here. First off, they've moved Jimmy Vesey to the Toronton Maple Leafs for Sam Morin and Dmytro Timashov. And in a corresponding move, they've dealt Ryan Sproul, a 2nd in 2020 and a 6th in 2019 to the Anaheim Ducks for Maxime Comtois.

Ferraro: This signals change here in New York. They've dealt 2 roster players, and only gotten one in return. The real haul here is in prospects. Maxime Comtois obviously has seen his stock fall drastically since the year before his draft, but is still a solid prospects. Timashov does have his flaws, but the kids real talented. My favorite part here is Morin though. The swap of Sproul for Morin is a real good one for the Rangers, as they add a more defensive defenseman.

images
images

Dreger: Were not done here. The Rangers have traded yet another one of their captains. Mats Zuccarello, a fan favorite and one of the longest tenured Rangers, has been traded to the Bruins along with Matt Beleskey for Jakub Zboril and a 1st in 2019.

Biron: The Bruins are major contenders this year. But on the flip side, the Rangers are building a real nice crop of prospects. Zboril will be a top-4 defender one day in New York, and this gives the Rangers two first round picks in the upcoming draft.

images
images

Miller: The Rangers have added yet another prospect. This time at the expense of Kevin Hayes and a 4th round pick in this years draft, they've acquired Nikita Scherbak from the St. Louis Blues. Scherbak will join the Rangers right away and they expect him to be a major performer.

O'Neill: Kevin Hayes was really underperforming this season and the Rangers are lucky they got this haul for him. They preyed on the Blues desperation for size and depth up the middle, as any contending team needs. Scherbak gives the Rangers song depth on the wings, and a real shooter that they just lack for the most part up front. This is a real good haul.

images
images
images

LeBrun: Were just moments away from the deadline here and the Rangers seem to have made their final move to solidify the tank this season. They've traded Jaroslav Halak, while Henrik Lundqvist is already out, along with prospects Dawson Leedahl and Sergei Zborivskiy to the LA Kings for prospect Kale Clague, RFA Tobias Rieder, a 2nd rounder and a 6th rounder.

McGuire: Rieder can't be signed until the offseason, Clague is a prospect, and the draft picks are just that, draft picks. The Rangers have gutted their roster, with the remains a team barely recognizable. If this Trade Deadline was a success remains to be seem, but if they're goal is to sell, then they've completed that.

images
images

Button: Two more notes here guys. The Rangers have claimed Riley Nash off waivers from the Bruins, and he will join the team for their game tonight in Ottawa. Also, the Rangers have recalled Brett Howden from the AHL.

Duthie: Well, that's all here guys. We'll see you at the draft.

Henrik Lundqvist ran into injured that derailed his chance at 30 wins again. Otherwise, posting the best SV% of his career, he was inredibly and the Rangers can count on him next year to carry them. They will need to find a new backup.

Brady Skjei, Kevin Shattenkirk, Tony DeAngelo and Neal Pionk were all splendid. In his stint after the Trade Deadline, Samuel Morin was a calming defensive presence, but Chris Bigras struggled in his sophomore season. Kampfer Kampfer'd it.

2019-2020 NHL Season

Henrik Lundqvist returns with a roster in front of him that could legitimately win the cup. His partner in crime is an old friend in Antti Raanta, who returns to New York after his stint in Arizona.

images

The Rangers return with the best defensive core they've had since their sun to the Cup Finals in 2013-2014. Brady Skjei seems ready to become one of the league elite defenders, while Kevin Shattenkirk handles the offense on his right side. The second pair of Nikita Zadorov and Tony DeAngelo has a nice look and blend between defense and offense, while the third pair of Samuel Morin and Neal Pionk/Chris Bigras won't be pushed around.

The Rangers have possible the best offensive group in the league. Headlined by elite players such as Max Pacioretty, Mika Zibanejad and Pavel Buchnevich, the Rangers have top end talent they haven't had in a long time. The supporting cast includes established players such as Vlad Namestnikov, Ryan Spooner and Adrain Kempe along with sophomores like Nikita Scherbak, Filip Chytil and rookie Brett Howden. The Rangers round out their depth up front with newcomers Jared McCann and Tobias Rieder and rookie Ty Ronning, with Antoine Vermette and Vinnie Hionostroza serving as extras.

The Rangers decided to start Lias Andersson in the AHL after a disappointing rookie season,
albeit on the 4th line.

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers end November with 10-10-6 record, 7th in Metro.
Dec. 1st, 2019

It's funny how when you have a lesser roster you do better. With all the signs pointing towards this being the Rangers year, they've fallen apart at the starting line. The offsense is clicking, but defense and even goaltending have been issues with Lundqvist seemingly finally hitting his age.

Second Half of Season

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers GM Brant King holds press conference.

King: Hey folks, this is gonna be a quick one. I have a trade to announce, and a statement to put out there to you fans. We do not stand for losing. This group was given every opportunity to win, and they should have. Changes are being made to get a winning culture in this dressing room. Enough with the losing.

We've sent Nikita Zadorov and Tobias Rieder to the Chicago Blackhawks for Marian Hossa and Lance Bouma, along with a 2nd round pick in this years draft and a 3rd in next. Marian is an esteemed veteran who knows how to win and we want that. Lance will greatly contribute with a give it all attitude in our bottom-6.

That is all. See you at the Trade Deadline.

Halifax Vikings Expansion Mode

images

Preview

I am very picky about my rosters, so it rubs me the wrong way to do an Expansion Draft using the old roster updates. So, using my updated roster, I will realistically take a player from each team from their protected Expansion lists (will be found out by entering the Expansion Draft and going through it choosing my players). The players chosen will then be traded to the Halifax Vikings roster, and I will also make some realistic side deals. Not many, because teams have said theyd stay away fro the most part, but I do expect some. The Arizona Coyotes franchise will be liquidated (roster players and porspects), with the Vikings getting the first 3 players, while the other players get sent around the league by team need from worst in the league to best (using 2016-2017 standings).

BREAKING NEWS: Halifax Vikings GM Brant King calls press conference.
Sept. 28th, 2017
King: Hi folks. Obviously in the results of our roster, it wasn't hard to see we took a surplus of great NHL defenders. I'm not into the business of ruining careers here, so we've obviously had to make some moves here to give some guys a chance to play. So right now I will be announcing the trades we've made.

Free Agency

The Vikings had $7.900M heading into the Free Agency period, the Vikings had the money to go fishing. How big of a fish did they want to catch though? It appears they wanted the biggest one.

John Carlson hit Free Agency as the biggest name on the market, and that meant big money for him. The Vikings stepped up and offered a 3 year, $20.25M deal. That was an easy one to accept for Carlson.

The Vikings also signed depth forward Nikita Soshnikov to a 1 year deal worth $1.000M.

Later in June both Slater Koekkoek and Conor Carrick accepted their QO's.

I should've mentioned that before. If the team "owed" me a pick, I'd give myself their top prospect on roster outside of Franchise and then Trade that player back to the team. In order to not create duplicates (prospect in original pipeline and my team's) I traded each prospect to the Arizona Coyotes before I subbed them out so they'd erase from game and I would have only "copy"

GM Brant King on his roster decisions:
On defense, Rasmus Dahlin and Andy Greene: After having talked things over with the coaching staff, we felt the best thing for starting off the season is to have 8D. Andy spent last season as our depth defenseman and didn't play any games due to a relatively healthy season, but we feel he's a good fit this year with Rasmus to provide a veteran presence. On Rasmus I'd say were going to ease him in, but we are very excited for the potential he has.
On 4 rookies making the roster: Were not delusional here. Were not expected to make a splash, but we believe these 4 guys help our team get towards our goal of the playoffs. Who knows? Maybe these guys help us shock the world.
On backup David Rittich: Guys, Rittsy is a real good goalie who struggled last year. I can't say I didn't look over some options but nothing worked financially for us so we felt the best thing to do was give David a chance to redeem himself.
On Slater Koekkoek in the AHL: I don't want to put a bad image on a great guy. He's a real hard worker and a talented hockey player. We just have so much depth theres not really a fit. That being said, we feel theres another level for him to get to that we haven't seen. Hopefully he can show us that this season.

The Vikings also moved Josh Manson to the Calgary Flames for a 2019 1st round pick. The defenseman was in the first year of a contract extension (signed by Anaheim) and the Vikings felt he wasn't performing up to that.

images

Retaining $1.500M of his salary, the Vikings moved Andy Greene to the St. Louis Blues along with a 2nd round pick for a 2019 6th round pick.

images
images

In a smaller move, the Vikings moved RFA Stephen Johns to the Golden Knights for Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. The forward will step in on the 4th line, and could be a resigning this summer.

images

In their smallest move, Halifax acquired Nick Jensen to serve as their depth defenseman from the Detroit Red Wings for a 2019 4th round pick.

The Vikings entered the resign phase with $28.500M in cap space after the trading of some albatross contracts in Greene, Kesler and Ryan. With many key RFA's to resign the GM was very busy.

The Vikings allowed Pierre-Edouard Bellemare to walk as he wanted to test FA.

GM Brant King on roster decisions:
On Dahlins sophomore season and Merkley making the roster: We expect Rasmus to take a big step forward this season. He was getting acclimated to the NHL level last season and it took a little longer than expected. As for Merks, he's a real talented kid. Bright , young offesnvie defenseman. We expect that he will come in kind of like Rasmus and maybe struggle a bit, but overall were very confident in him.
On Tierney and Danault returning to roster: Last year we couldn't get Phil signed to a deal and Chris kind of let his game slip. But this year both of these guys came into camp very prepared, and they won themselves a roster spot. Nothing comes unearned here. They deserve it.
On goaltending: Last year was Korp's first year as a starter so of course there was going to be a learning curve. Now we've got Blockaid in here behind him and we feel he's a nice voice over Korp's shoulder as a vet. We expected great things from the crease out this season.

BREAKING NEWS: Vikings sign Jakub Silfverberg to 1-year deal.
Jan. 5th, 2020

Trade Deadline

images

The TRADECENTRE broadcast team:
Host: James Duthie
Trade Breaker Desk: Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger, Pierre LeBrun, and Gord Miller
Instant Analysis Panel: Ray Ferraro, Jeff O’Neill, Dave Poulin, Martin Biron, Pierre McGuire
Trade Bait: Craig Button
Deadline Panel: Jamie McLennan, Aaron Ward

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duthie: Hi folks, and thank you for tuning into the 2020 Edition of TradeCentre on TSN. Were here, back after a 3 year hiatus, to bring you coverage from around the NHL and specifically the Halifax Vikings. Let's send you right to Craig Button so he can tell us a little about the Trade Bait.

Button: Well James, the Vikings only have 2 players on the Trade Bait board. Chris Tierney, who spent last season in the AHL, returned to the NHL but has seen himself fall out of favor in the Vikings bottom-6. Also, Phillip Danault, who sat last season out as an RFA, has struggled in his return to the Vikings and finds himself on the Trade Block.

images
images

McKenzie: I have a trade coming in .... I'm hearing the Vikings have dealt Chris Tierney to the Canucks for Derek Dorsett. Dorsett will start in the AHL, presumably to mentor some young kids and provide a veteran voice.

Ferraro: Disappointing return. Just like Koekkoek, the Vikings had a guy here who torpedoed his trade value through poor play. The measly return of a now AHL'er is disappointing and should be considered a failure on GM Brant King's part.

images

Dreger: Another trade coming in here. The Vikings have made another move, trading Vancouvers 2nd round pick this year to the Minnesota Wild for Mikko Koivu. That's all for now.

McGuire: Redemption deal for King. He snags a veteran center for the playoff run. Now, over the last 2 months, he's bolstered his struggling bottom-6 with Jakob Silfverberg and Mikko Koivu. Pretty good job.

O'Neill: I have to agree there. Getting those two guys gives them a real threatening bottom-6 group. The depth they are building should get them into the playoffs and could even win them a round.

images

LeBrun: Just moments before the Deadline, I think we have a last deal from Halifax. They've acquired Cam Ward for 2 goaltending prospects. And they've placed Keith Kinkaid on waivers, who should clear due to bad play.

Biron: I like this from Halifax. Ward's a guy who has won a Cup and can really provide a good voice in the locker room. He can also take over if Korpisalo struggles.

Duthie: And that's it for us today! We'll see you at the 2020 Free Agent Frenzy.

Jakob Chychrun and Rasmus Dahlin joined OEL and Carlson as great successes this season, while Jake Gardiner was good too. Ryan Merkley had an okay rookie season and Connor Carrick was adequate in his fill-ins.

Mikko Koivu and Jakob Silfverberg both helped round out the bottom-6 and stopped some of the bleeding. It's still a weak point heading into the Playoffs, though. Evgeny Svechnikov proved GM Brant King pretty smart for signing him long term though, didn't he?

I have a question. I haven't bought NHL in years. I use to enjoy making a franchise.. and subbing in KHL and European teams instead of using NHL teams and making a long term franchise with all foreign teams . Is it possible to do that in 18? Can you sub european teams in franchise like before?
