22 year old stadium is old? But I’ve heard about the ones in Carolina and Tennessee that needed or need major renos and those are about the same age as fedex field.

If they do build a new one would it make sense to go back to the site of rfk? DC united moved to the much more appropriate Audi Field last season so no major tenant left at rfk.

"FedEx Field is a concrete relic of stadiums past"

This building opened in 1997 and was most recently renovated in 2012.

The Texas Rangers will leave The Ballpark in Arlington Ameriquest Field in Arlington Rangers Ballpark in Arlington Globe Life Park - built in 1994 - in Arlington for Globe Life Field next year. Insufficient luxury/club boxes? No fancy scoreboards? Lack of virtually on-the-field seating? Poor audio/video options around the concourses and such?

Nope. No retractable roof, and no easy way to put one on. 25-year old stadium, otherwise up-to-date in many other ways, getting re-purposed [downsized] while a brand new stadium gets built with the retractable roof at a cost of at least $500 million.

Don't underestimate the ability of pro sports teams to figure out ways to make existing stadiums obsolete.

I’ve been to the stadiums in Carolina and Nashville. And while it’s true that they lack some of the latest bells and whistles, they’re FAR from being obsolete as venues. A simple remodel is all that’s needed. Some of this stuff is just one-upsmanship getting out of control.

No Redskins fan I've ever talked too says they like FedEx Field so nothing short of building a new stadium will surprise me.

I don't know about Tennessee but the Panthers stadium underwent a significant renovation about 5 years ago that saw new scoreboards and escalators installed.

FexEd Field is just a giant money pit. Fans don't like it because it's way too expensive.

Bank of America Stadium is far from obsolete on the inside. Bank of America Stadium suffers from a major parking problem that's only getting worse as uptown Charlotte continues to grow. When the stadium was built, there were tons of gravel lots that accommodated a sell-out crowd with ease. Now there are less than half those spaces, the costs have increased 1000% in some cases, and not to get overly political, but our absolutely asinine city council people and county commissioners actually think people will ride bicycles and scooters to NFL games...

For the Rams in St. Louis, it was a requirement in the lease that the building be in the top third of stadiums (by what metric, I have no idea). Because it wasn't, it gave Kroenke the out to get to LA.

I'm not saying every city was stupid enough to put a clause in the lease like this, but who knows the stupid shit some mayor 20 years ago agreed to when they were trying to lure a professional sports team?

That's such a perfect example of the whole one-upsmanship dynamic. Easy for sitting officials to make that kind of deal and reap all the glory of acquiring a team, then hand it off the arena commitment their successors like a ticking bomb.

It will continue as long as there are public subsidies for these buildings. There's a reason the old privately-funded buildings lasted 50+ years.

I will be fair to Rangers here. While I still do not believe city should pay for it, there are worse reasons to ask for new building than needing a roof so their fans dont get cooked under the sun in Texas, in July.

Not to be political, but George W. Bush “ran” the team then, so he was the dim bulb that was good with an open air stadium in Texas summers.

FedEx was designed for maximum revenue extraction. No video boards because you’d rent a gimmick to hold in your hands to watch replays while juggling your drink and dog. Then mobile phones happened.

Snyder can go pound sand. The league will charge him a fat fee to let him move, he’ll wind up having to finance it without DC money behind it and the NFL would expand there the following week for $1bn and pay for the new building.

There’s no market he can take them that will be worth more than the DC area. Not St. Louis, Sam Antonio or anywhere like that.

If we’re talking new stadium then I think they will head back to the site of rfk and tear that down and build over it.

Problem is that the DC city council is moving heaven and earth to make that not possible, if it already hasn’t happened.

Didn't think the stadium was that old. Still 25-30 yrs. seems like an appropriate time for a new stadium so there you go.

As a Redskins fan all I want is for this to happen. FedEx is a terrible looking stadium in a bad spot. No one likes it! Snyder do something nice for us, just this once!

Personally I like taking the light rail to games, I do this with Hornets games too. It's not right off the line so there's some long walking involved but for reasons you stated it's better than driving Uptown searching in vain to find a place to park, and then paying to park. And this is just my opinion, but the Panthers tailgate scene is kind of weak. It's way more fun to tailgate in Raleigh for Hockey.

The thought of taking those shitty city scooters to the stadium makes me laugh, but I'm sure there's someone who loves it so what the f*** do I know? :dunno:

Putting a stadium into PG county was probably not wise. Its a low prestige location that takes a long time to get to, certainly from NoVa but even MoCo and NW DC which happen to be all the locations where money in the area is concentrated. Meanwhile in places like Bowie or Laurel you can very easily go to Baltimore for Ravens games , so theres a notable Ravens fan presence in PG anyway.

Stadium should be in inner DC or Virginia probably.

We've taken the light rail to two of the soccer matches. Taking is great, leaving leaves a lot to be desired because of the crowds. Took over an hour after one game; could have walked back to Scaleybark in that time. The second time, we went to eat after the game well up Tryon (Ri-Ra), and that worked better.

With the Hornets, I use my monthly tag and park in that lot and walk.

One Panther game, we parked on the street in Dilworth and just walked. But yeah, the Panther tailgate scene is poor because of the parking being so haphazard and stupidly expensive. I have no doubt that Tepper wants that new stadium outside of uptown so he can control the parking and gain a new revenue stream.

Ask them if they'd like it better if someone other than the Redskins were playing there. Alternatively, ask them if they'd like it better if Dan Snyder wasn't the owner.

Nice for us? He will get you (tax payers) to pay for it then increase ticket prices and concession prices because its a new stadium then sit back and collect even more profits.

I am not an expert on DC by any means but the real estate is quite expensive and the are is pretty limited. There wont be a lot of good options without moving outside of DC into Maryland/Virginia, which could further complicate things. Its not like a team moving from one side of a city to the other it would be moving into an entirely different jurisdiction

I can't read the link, but I know Hogan was trying to get the land across the Beltway from the National Harbor but it looks like that's not going to happen anymore.
