I'm starting to feel more optimistic about our chances next year. Let's go get a proper #2C (i.e., not Brassard. How about we trade for Ziba?) and a top #4 D (come back Methot!), keep everybody including Karlsson, and with the infusion of youth from Chabot and White we should be good to go.

Hoffman - Duchene - Dzingel <- mucho chemistry
Ryan - #2 C FA - Stone
Smith - Pageau - White <- or trade Smith and move MPS up
MPS - McCormick - Pyatt <- give MPS $1M for one year.
Gaborik, Paul, Burrows <- send Burrows to orbit plz

#2 D FA - Karlsson
Chabot - Ceci
Boro - Wideman <- would love to see Wideman back and given more responsibility on the PP and 3 vs 3.
Claesson, Harpur, Jaros <- good D depth

Our AHL team could be stacked, with guys like Brown, Chlapik, Batherson, Gagne, Luchuk, Perron upfront, and Jaros, Englund, Lajoie etc. in defense. We just need to surround them with SKILLED veterans.

And I haven't even considered who we pick in the first round...

Of course the trick is getting two top FA players in the current team context... But I find it strange that we're talking about a rebuild while our top players in Karlsson and Duchene are under contract for a whole other year. We need to give this crew one more shot, and if we're out of it by the deadline then sure, let's do a firesale.

Hoffman-Duchene-Dzingel (skill and speed line)
Ryan-Brown-Stone (skill and size line)
Chlapik-Pageau-White (pesky potential line)
Paajarvi-JOB-Pyatt
Formenton 9 games then back to OHL
Batherson may earn some NHL games (up to him), then AHL

Trade/buy-out/retire Smith, Burrows, Gaborik. Keep Ryan until the deadline or next summer. His contract will be easier to get rid of by then. Hope that he rebounds within a healthy season, facilitating a trade with a bit of retention (similar to the Phaneuf deal). Maybe to a team like Vegas.

Chabot-Karlsson
Harpur-Ceci
Borowiecki-Wideman
Claesson

Re-sign Wideman. Ideally a UFA like DeHaan would be cool to sign to shelter Harpur a bit, but I doubt that happens and if we’re truly going young, looks like this is it.

Anderson
Condon

Meh. Hope that they continue their recent play into next season.

That’s my best guess. I think we’re all gonna be way off. Dorion can be pretty spontaneous, for better or worse. We’ll probably see an unpredictable move or two. Also Brown can singlehandedly improve our PP imo.

I don't mind this, but I doubt they'll feed Brown steak.

He’s a very big boy and still growing, need lots of protein

1)to everyone putting Brown into the lineup right away...just no. Look at Chabot to figure out when he will be full time (mid season call up).

2)everyone wanting to keep the team together ... Melnyk literally sent out a second message to fans indicating a moderate retool.

3)TSN tradebait board from last year predicted 80+% the players that would be traded by the next deadline. Going off of that, you can assume: Karlsson, Hoffman, Smith, Pageau and Ryan will be gone by next deadline.

I'd retool the team like this
2018 changes - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Maybe a tweak here or there, but the team aint terrible, its much younger and faster, and its a realistic scenario.

Big problem you have Duncstar is that your roster on cap friendly would be significantly under the cap floor (that is going to raise)

Even if the Evil wants to do all the things that the rumors pretend him to be wanting to do, he won’t be able to as the NHL won’t let him

No way is Boro the 7th d. Claesson playing over him? Not after the year Claesson’s had.

So, no one is listing Wikstrand in the lineup - what's the plan for him? He's looking really good over here in Sweden. Could he at least be traded?
trying to escape a city in the middle of the night to avoid working for the company that hired you is actually frowned upon over here....by everyone.

Karlsson, Smith, Hoffman out.

Tried to keep it simple without adding trades or who might be picked 1st round this year. Definitely could be better and hopefully what they trade the 3 above for helps the team next year. They keep Ryan to max Karlsson.

-Senators trade Karlsson+Ryan in exchange for David Clarkson+Erik Haula+Shea Theodore+Cody Glass+2019 1st+2020 1st+2020 2nd

-Shea Theodore signs a 2 year 3M AAV bridge deal (2.25/3.75)

-Stone signs an 7 year 7.25M AAV extension

-Senators pick 2nd overall, select Svechnikov

-Hoffman trade is held off due to soft offers and his chemistry with Duchene

-Brown makes the team in a sheltered 4C/PP specialist role

-Gaborik+Burrows aren't bought out, the team chooses to ride out their contracts due to the amount of surplus salary space they have after trading Karlsson+Ryan away.

-Ceci signs a 4 year back loaded extension in the 4M-4.5M range. Year 1 has a 3.75M salary.

-The Senators take a risk and sign local boy Calvin De Haan. De Haan has been out with an upper body injury for the majority of the season. I used Kulikov's contract with the Jets as a template, so something around 3 years 4.35M.

-Smith traded for a draft pick or prospect. If there is no market for Smith, it'd mean we'd probably have to buyout Burrows to clear up enough salary to fit under 68M.

-Goalie situation remains exactly the same.

-Guy Boucher is shot to the moon.

Hoffman (5.65)-Duchene (6.5)-Dzingel (2.1)
Svechnikov (3.575)-Haula (2.75)-Stone (7.25)
Pyatt (1.2)-Pageau (3.3)-White (1.491)
Chlapik (0.894)-Brown (1.604)-McCormick (0.650)
Burrows (2.5)-Gaborik (4.575)

Chabot (1.223)-Ceci (3.75)
Theodore (2.25)-De Haan (4.35)
Borowiecki (1.2)-Jaros (0.801)
Harpur (0.650)

Anderson (5.5)
Condon (2.5)

Total Player Salary=61.5705

Dead Salary
Dion Phaneuf=1.65
Clarke MacArthur=0.950*
David Clarkson=0.950*
Total Dead Salary=3.55

Total Salary=65.1205M

I don't think that is a great team or anything, it is what it is. I challenged myself to try and build a team next year while being somewhat realistic based on our salary structure and the rumoured Karlsson to VGK deal. Very weak top end of the D, but those four are all legit top 4 defenders....so maybe if we have some strong goaltending and improved coaching we could do okay....

I also totally forgot, Nick Paul is no longer waiver exempt next season. So maybe he makes the team over Burrows or Gaborik, and we just bury whichever one of them that fails to make the team in the minors. Burying one of those two and calling up a replacement (Paul) would add an additional 650k-950k to the overall budget.

Maybe we finally give up on Paul and try to deal him for a 3rd-5th type pick at the draft since we're low on draft picks, and if he doesn't make the team we'll lose him to waivers. I think it's fair to think this team might have given up on him considering there is so much opportunity for call up at forward right now with our injury situation and our season effectively over, yet he hasn't gotten a game in yet.
