I see a lot of people posting hypothetical rosters lately that include Kindl and Smith each signing for around $1.5M, and I'm not sure I buy that. In Smith's case, its possible. He'll be a UFA in 3 years, so $1.5M per year for the next 2 years allows the Wings to reevaluate him while he's still a RFA. On the other hand, I can't see Kindl signing for $1.5M, unless it were a 1 year deal, which would be utterly stupid on Holland's part given that Kindl is a UFA next season and has had a solid season since becoming a regular.

I also think signing Kindl to a short-term deal is against Holland's MO.

Filppula: As a 24 year old coming off a 36 point season, he got a 5 year, $3M deal under a $56.7M cap.
Kronwall: As a 26 year old coming off a 22 point season (over 68 games played), he received a 5 year, $3M deal under a $56.8M cap.
Abdelkader: As a 25 year old, with a 15-20 point history over 3 years, 1.8 over 4 years.

These guys are in slightly different situations:
Ericsson: As a 27 year old and 2nd year player (which, as you may recall, was comprised of a horrific season followed by, at best, a mediocre season for a 5/6 defenseman) got $3.25M over 3 years. Of course, he was an unrestricted free agent.
Helm: As a 25 year old, $2.1M over 4 years. This signing IMO is relevant due to its length and Helm's age, but Helm was easily already worth $2.1M when he signed this deal.

I think a more reasonable estimate for Kindl is something like 2.25-2.5 over 3 years or 2.75-3M over 4 years.

Thoughts?

Smiths underachieving might be a blessing in disguise ... but Kindl has risen to the occasion and will command a pretty heft raise next year.

Anything 2.75 and under is fine with me. He still needs some work on the defensive side but his offensive side is more than obvious. If 3 is what Kronwall got then anything around there (a little less hopefully but the cap did go up so....) is pretty OK I think.

I think Kindl will get something like this, and that contract will end up looking good as he matures. Similar to Ericsson and Filppula with the contrcts they got.

With Smith I don't really know. Hard for him to ask for a ton since the points haven't been there this year. But he does still have potential.

Maybe like 4 yrs/10 mil for Smith? or 3yrs/7million?

I wonder if Smith would want a 1-2 year just to show what he's worth in an 82 game season of being healthy, then aim for a payday.

I'd hate to pay him on potential alone, but if it's on a long enough term it could benefit us greatly if/when it pays off.

Like I said, Smith has 3 years before becoming a UFA. I think Holland will give him a 2 year deal. He's too unproven for a long-term deal.

Holland is going to try to sign Smith longterm, which would be 5 yrs or thereabouts-- if he and Smitty's agent can actually agree on what those years after the next 1-2 might be worth. No way would Holland prefer to go 2 yrs, have him blossom and then pay a hefty amount that soon.
