I really love waiting for Habs fans to complain about Koivu, Sabres fans to complain about the D, Oilers fans to complain about Roloson... then point out that Koivu was awful, Markkanen was great, and a substitute D was responsible for half the Sabres’ Game 7 offense.

It causes them to do the internet equivalent of sputtering in frustrated rage.

Well in that case, boy does HFB have a ripe thread for your picking today!

Rod Brind’Amour on future after Hurricanes: ‘I can’t imagine I’ll be coaching anywhere else’

For subscribers..this is a very good article by Scott Burnside of The Athletic. Offers some insight into what's happening behind the bench and with the team.

“You can see it in our play. Some nights we look pretty good and then other nights you’re like, what are we watching?” Brind’Amour said. “Last year we didn’t see that. Last year we might not have won but I always felt like we should have won. Always. And I had maybe honestly two or three games last year where I was like ‘wow, we were bad.’ Other than that we should have or could have won every game because of the way we played. Now there’s games where I’m like ‘this is brutal.’ And that’s where I’m struggling with is because we have different personalities, different talent, different abilities and so I’ve got to probably do a better job of figuring that out. But I don’t want to lose track of what I know what will make us successful. So that’s where we’re at right now. Just trying to figure it out.”

Didn’t give me a lot if confidence about him making adjustments to make us successful. He knows what will make us successful and wants to stick with it. Coaches have to adjust to new players as much as players have to adjust to schemes.
This is why I feel despite some pretty good success we’ve kinda gone backwards this year. We got rid of talent heading into last year and went gritty. We built a team that was supposed to probably fail but was actually built in Rod’s image, a team he knew how to coach. Now we’ve re-added talent, lost a bunch of grit and for some reason expected the same or better results. Rod doesn’t know how to really coach this team because the same buttons don’t work when pushed.

It never made a lot of sense to add pure talent. Only players that work for a guy like Rod, the more talented the better. This years plan doesn’t really set us back, as the development of Svech and Necas are necessary moving forward....but if building on last year was the plan it hasn’t really worked and the reasons why are fairly obvious.

Of course if we had last seasons goaltending we might’ve been singing a different tune.

Its not much but the canes have a higher points percentage than the BJs and the Flyers... the stars are aligning for them to start squeezing one of them or the islanders out. Just need to TCB

We're nine points behind WSH for first in the Metro with a game in hand.

Or, if you consider PIT the team to beat by percentage (which, amazingly, you probably should), we're eight points back with four head-to-head matchups to come.

We're also only two points clear of 16th overall FLA with one game in hand.

All it's ever been about is taking care of business. Scoreboard/standings watching will make you nuts.

Yep, I've said that for a while. I'm ecstatic when something goes our way, but tough to sweat it too much when it doesn't. We need to take care of us.

Scoreboard watching is pointless. It doesn't matter where you are on Feb. 12th, only on April 4th.

The 'Canes have 72 points with 23 games remaining. 12-6-5 record=29 points=101 points. If that isn't enough to make the playoffs, what more can you do? It'll be interesting to read the narratives if that does occur, but I don't think it will. One of Carolina, Philadelphia, New York or Columbus is going to fall off.

For the 'Canes, the biggest hurdle will be that they have only 8 games against non-playoff teams remaining: Rags, @Mon, @NJ, @Det, @Buf, Buf, Ott, @NJ. Tor twice, NYI twice, Bos twice, Pitts times 4.... at least the big guns are getting hot at the right time.

Mine actually stayed the same after looking at it again (I thinks). I thought they went up 20%, but then said “wait, I forgot about the parking passes”. But yeah the lack of line items, is a bit confusing.

Triggered by BBAs war for/against empty net goals and their worth I looked at the all-time leaders. #49 in NHL history is Sebastian Aho. At his current pace he passes Gretzky’s all-time ENG record less than 10 years from now. Also RB only scored 12 empty net goals in his career which just seems impossible.

If Aho breaks this record it will clinch his case for the HHOF

Number of times this year that the Canes have had X wins in their last 10 games:

7 - 3
6 - 24
5 - 19
4 - 3
3 - 1

The 3 and 4s happened over a 5-game span in early November. That led immediately into the 7s when we bounced back. Every other day of the season, there has been either a 6 or a 5 in our L10 wins column.

Related: our only streaks of 3+ games, either winning or losing, happened before Thanksgiving.

That is incredibly consistent in its slightly-above-averageness.
