I remember once hearing that sports teams are an example of the city they play in.

Pittsburgh for instance is blue collar and the Steelers play a blue collar brand of football. Baltimore is a gritty city and the Ravens are known for their defense. The Lakers are flashy like Los Angeles. The Lions and Browns are dying like Detroit and Cleveland.

I guess Raleigh is a city full of soft hipsters afraid of confrontation and it shows in our hockey team. I don't know.

The team moved to Chapel Hill?

With better defense and a better power play, I wonder how anemic the rest of the offense really looks? We may not be quite as bad as we think. Though with the removal of Lindy and Ferland throwing more pucks at the net and that will create close to the amount of offense Lindy brought. I'm not expecting Necas and Svech to replace Skinner though.

All for naught if we can't making a f***ing save.

It seems like the brain trust really noticed all the perimeter play and looked to address it with a crash the net style this off season.

Zykov, Martinook, Ferland, and McGinn all give options to move some bodies in front of the net and all appear to have some degree of a scoring touch. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of those guys on each line.

No idea where to put this, but whatever.

Per this site (Media Musings: More Hires Made At The Athletic--Who's Next? | Sports Channel 8), The Athletics no.1 target for the Canes beat writer is LDC, even if it's not sure if he would leave The N&O to go there.

Comments? Who would you want there if you have anyone?
I'm sure they'd love to get Luke... but they're not going to pull that off. N&O is still a bit too big of a deal sports wise regionally here and I'm not sure they'll be able to offer enough.

The lack of a Canes writer is what has kept me from getting a full subscription to the Athletic. I’ve done the trial thing and the coverage there is certainly very good, but not yet worth $60 to me with no Canes centric writer. I really wonder what in the heck they’d write about during the off-season...”Sebastian Aho likes his mom’s cooking, exclusive story now available...”

DeCock makes the most sense, but I’m again, not sure if his sometimes snarky tone towards the team is worth $60 a year as well when you can get that for free from the N&O pretty regularly during the season.

PS-I imagine whoever potentially gets that job would pull double duty for ACC football/basketball coverage, so maybe there’s enough there to churn out articles during the summer.

no dispute with your points, but with a little bit of poking around, you can find coupons to get that year sub price down to $30, which is what I did. I think it was from an ad on instagram after I searched for subscription prices or something.

I think both Cory Lavalette and Matt Karash would do a good job. Matt is more of a blogger, so I don't know if he'd want to jump full time to journalism, so I think Cory would be the better choice due to his experience.

Yeah, I got mine for $30, and I've been pleased with it. Other than the Canes, I've gotten pretty decent coverage of the teams I care for. The national coverage for most sports has been good. And I find plenty of articles from teams I don't follow that are worth reading to me.

I don't love Luke, but it'd be nice to have that coverage there. If they get the right person, I don't think writing in the off-season should be that difficult. I think there are always plenty of deep dives to take for any team and sport, and they seem to have the time and flexibility to do so there. At least with Luke, I'd imagine he's got some connections at this point, so that makes him a good candidate.

They've pulled in talent from more important places that the N&O, so I wouldn't be shocked.

I like Matt but hed have to polish up a bit to be on The Athletic. I enjoy Cory's writing and would prefer him over others.

Down Goes Brown has some "insight" on six confusing teams. Not shocking, the Canes are confusing...

6 Confusing Teams

It should have happened last year, but Scott Darling‘s implosion scuttled that. This year they’ve added Petr Mrazek, so between him and Darling someone should produce a rebound year.

I keep seeing sentiment this but I can't see the reasoning beyond hopes and wishes.

Who was the last middling backup goalie coming off a terrible year to "rebound" into a suitable NHL starter? Is this situation common enough to warrant it's widespread belief? Genuinely curious. Maybe Dubnyk who broke out on a significantly better Minnesota Wild team than he had in his previous years?

It happens every year to at least one goalie.
