Slavin 5th, Dougie 7th in the Norris. Would have been interesting to see where Dougie landed if not injured. Still wouldn't have won it, but I bet he'd have been higher.

I'm just glad we have competent D-men that are good enough to make this list, let alone make the top-10 in voting. I do agree w/ you on Dougie if not injured.

Imagine how good (or at least better, as they also need a goalie) Edmonton would be if they had Nurse or whoever make this list, especially now that they have two forwards who have won the Hart.

Wasn't Dougie on pace for maybe getting 30 goals? Wouldn't that have pretty much make him a shoe-in for winning if he pulled that off?

Probably not a shoe in. If Dougie kept scoring at the same pace for a full 68 games, he would have ended up with approximately 20G, 58P.

Carlsson had 15G, 75P
Josi had 16G, 65P and better defensively than Carlsson
Hedman had 11G, 55P and was probably the best defensively of the 4.

Even if Dougie stayed healthy, I doubt he wins it. Maybe he's top 3-4, but not likely winning it.

Jaccob Slavin has tied Mark Howe (1980) for the highest Norris finish in franchise history.

Dougie Hamilton's finish is 4th highest, and 3rd if you don't count Dave Babych's trade season in 1986.

The only other top-10 finishes were Howe (1980) and Ulf Samuelsson (1987).

The next highest finish by a Carolina Hurricane was... uh... Sean Hill at #13 in 1999, barely nudging out Dougie's 2019.

It is not an exaggeration to say that we currently have 2 of the top 3 defensemen in franchise history.

Jake interview. Has high praise for Slavin. Says playing with Pesce allows him to play his best game and talks about how talented Pesce is on the ice. He seems very open to criticism and tough conversations with coaches about his play and accountability.

He was initially nervous about coming to the Canes but really likes the team. Talks quite a bit about his current training and youth hockey experience.

Thanks for posting.

A couple of other things I noted. First, one of his vets that really took him under his wing (so to speak) and helped him was JM Liles. IIRC, it was Liles that was paired with Pesce that first year and kind of took Pesce under his wing as well. Secondly, Gardiner is a Green Bay Packers fan, so I like him.

This explains a lot.

a packers fan living in the twin cities? maybe jake likes hate.

Gardiner was born in 1990. Probably started watching the NFL around what, age 10?

Have you looked at the Vikings record from 2001 to 2007?

Besides, he went to college in Madison. Only thing more dangerous than a Packers fan living in Minnesota is a Vikings fan living in Wisconsin.

The Athletic’s 2020 ‘Salary Cap Era’ NHL Franchise Rankings

Tier 3: The Middleweights

12. Carolina Hurricanes
Total: 18
The Hurricanes have built up a point total in these standings through high-impact playoff appearances. Until this year, when the Hurricanes get a shot in the postseason, they made the most of it. This will be a fascinating offseason for the Hurricanes, a franchise looking to upgrade its goaltending, but they should be positioned to make another run in the future.
Total playoff years: 20, 19CF, 09CF, 06SC

31 Thoughts: With Stanley Cup awarded, NHL faces new questions - Sportsnet.ca

No confirmation from team and/or agents, but word is Carolina was willing to look at eight years, $7.5 million per year on an Andrei Svechnikov extension. That’s not low, but the player is willing to bet on himself to do even better, which is why this might end up being a bridge deal — for now.

Well at least they are trying. $7.5 x 8 years would have been one of the best contracts in the league as soon as next year. In his podcast interview Dundon said he thought the RFA tide was turning back to lower numbers after getting out of control. Said that Andrei could accept a huge deal now and be set for life or wait a year and then negotiate but risk injury and league factors coming into play. I don't blame Andrei for betting on himself but I'd love to have him signed for 8 years.

Later on Laine:
There’s a legit chance it happens. Columbus, hoping to make a major move, is in there, but is there a match? Same with Carolina.

Looks like Carolina is exploring all options.

Later on NJ:
New Jersey’s 18th and 20th picks are in play. (Not the seventh, I don’t think.) The Devils could do a lot of things: move up, move down or trade for immediate help. If the move is for a player, they are looking for youth (maximum 26) with term or team control. It’s a specific target

Sounds a lot like Fleury or Bean to me. Similar to the Gauthier for Keane deal, one of Fleury/Bean for #18 or #20 kicks the can down the road past the expansion Draft.
