Isn't that what 99.9 said about Mike Maniscalco from Chicago? He pandered so much he ended up working for the team. We'll see, of course, but I'll believe in-depth coverage for hard-core Canes Canes when I see it.

That’s what the Athletic does. Hardcore coverage that people pay for. If it’s just another lapdog no one is going to pay for it.

While getting someone local that we already like would be exciting, it also gives you 0 bang for your buck.

I like Cory. I also can read Cory for free any time I want. I’d be ok with Luke, but up until recently I could read him for free as well.

Does everyone here realize that if they’re pushing for someone already established in the market, they’re basically just asking to pay for something they already enjoy for free?

By all indications their list of targets in market was a list of 1: Luke. Not a surprise that they went out of market for this. If it's more stuff like the Burnside inside the draft room article I'm optimistic, but I'm not banking on it.

FYI Burnside was at Canes training camp a week ago. Probably a insider story brewing again.

Zykov going to score 20+ this year and then go into next year making $675k - one of the best values in the league.

One thing I noticed Zykov doing, which I don't see often but was REALLY pissing of Holtby, was that he would skate back between the goalie and the net to gain positioning when the puck was being cycled (low/no chance of puck to crease). Refs didn't seem to mind. Zykov's hands in-tight combined with him being an immovable object is special.

I'm not picky.

Score goals any way to you care to, Z.

I mean, I'm a little picky in the sense that he can only score just so many goals on the PP and it's harder to just plant in front of the net at ES. I'm all for having a guy in that role, but a little bit of sniping ability would elevate him from being a specialist to a decently rounded offensive threat.

Not that he's anywhere near this level, but that was what used to be such a PITA about Keith Tkachuk. Every so often he'd just crank one from the wing.

The Athletic would rather hire an out-of-market writer with an established audience than hire a local one with the ability to grow an audience.

I understand that position, and I don't fault them for it, but it is a bit disappointing

Or they believe there is an untapped audience here who would appreciate an established writer who can write hockey rather than grow a local writer who doesn't have the experience/exposure on the local level.

I think this market actually needs more hockey coverage from those with experience, so I am excited about the fact that it's not The Athletic poaching Luke or Chip and the N&O backfilling.

I agree with what you are saying. On that note, wasn't his first goal with the Canes last year at even strength when Aho and TT rushed the zone and he received a drop pass in the center of the slot and just buried it?

Every indication was that they wanted Luke, and he turned them down. I doubt Chip was asked, because his Canes coverage is generally garbage.

If it's someone like Burnside, that's fine. But if it was someone who was covering another market and they move them here to cover the Canes, I'd rather have had them hire a local writer that has been following the team up to this point.
