I'm calling it right now...if Cam isn't resigned we're going to get a serious return for him....not 1st round serious, but probably 2nd or 3rd rounder plus a B- prospect or player....I hear the Peg and Mo calling right now....

I fully expect Connor Hellebuyck to emerge as the backup option. He's destroyed every level so far. They were looking for a way to get him some NHL starts and now that Pavelec is down, the door is wide open. I think they'll be okay with a Hutchinson/Hellebuyck combo until January when Pavelec returns. They seem to have gone all in on the idea of having Pavs be the guy there until Hellebuyck is ready.

Gerbe expected to be out rest of 2015.

Do you think we call up someone? Ryan? Di Giuseppe? Hope we don't plan on making Terry a regular now.

I would expect them to call somebody up as they've almost always carried a 13th forward.

Some Canes thoughts in Friedman's 30 Thoughts

18. As you read this, no team does a better job of preventing shots than the Carolina Hurricanes. The team allows 25.4/game, the best in the NHL. The concern is where they shoot from. Going into last Friday’s game against Toronto, just 10.3 per cent of their shots were from the slot in front of the net (according to Sportslogiq). The league average is 12. What hurts even more is Carolina’s perimeter percentages were all above average — too many from the points or the wings. Hard to score from out there, got to get greasier.

19. It’s interesting to watch Carolina in goal with two markedly different styles. From the time he won the Conn Smythe Trophy in leading the Hurricanes to the 2006 Stanley Cup, Cam Ward’s always been about the flow of the play in front of him. He’s aggressive, then backs-in.

Newly-acquired Eddie Lack is a different animal. In Vancouver, coach Roland Melanson prefers deep. Here, counterpart David Marcoux wants Lack out further, saying in one team broadcast they like the idea of making saves with knees on the white ice. I was curious about that, because Lack has admitted his skating gets him into trouble sometimes and he prefers to set early. Watching a bit more of his work, you can see he’s asked to get deeper as the play gets closer to him. On the rush, or in the neutral zone, they want him out.

“Be six-foot-five, not five-foot-10,†as one coach (not in Carolina) explained. It also seems they are asking him not to set or go down as early as he used to. “I would assume that’s because they are worried shooters can pick that apart,†the above coach said.

20. It’s another very odd complaint to make, but I do wonder if the Hurricanes’ ability to prevent shots is a factor here. Kari Lehtonen’s gone through that in both Atlanta and Dallas, struggling on less-busy nights. When making changes, you want reps. Lack’s not getting that, partially because he’s been struggling, partially because he’s not seeing enough of them. But what’s the soluton?

“Sorry guys, don’t check anyone.â€

Interesting take on the different coaching styles. I think last night was the first we really got to see the Lack we were all hoping for. He was a stud and should get the next handful of starts.

If this team wants to trade Cam, then he has to play the majority. They have to show case him. Having him sit on the bench won't help. Lack will get majority of the starts, like 95% of them after the deadline.

While that is true, in the long run we're also talking about acquiring a low draft pick (who's trading even a 3rd for an expensive goalie with a .902?) at the cost of impacting our future starting goalie's confidence and experience.

This is why the idea that they are playing Ward more than Lack for showcasing purposes is hogwash.

Ward, to this point in the year, has started more games because he is playing better.

If Lack starts playing better than Ward, he'll become the starter...the coaching staff isn't going to wring their hands over the implications on Ward's trade value (I think GM's have, by and large, formed their opinion on Ward by now anyway).

I don't see the big deal, to be honest. Neither goaltender has played particularly well this year, so if either one has an issue with the number of starts or the decision to start one over the other, they only have themselves to blame.

If Lack wants more starts, we need more games like last night's and less games like...almost every other one he's had this year. Likewise for Ward.

Right, and it might sound crazy, but I'd venture to guess they don't look at it and go ".902? Pass."

Francis on Gleason: "He looked and felt good physically, but didn’t feel up to the grind of the NHL mentally."

With Murphy now back, Pesce being a pleasant surprise and Slavin showing some promise and at least holding his own, you wonder if he saw the writing on the wall also. Hainsey, Liles, Hannifin, Slavin and Jordan all lefties....Faulk, Pesce, Muphy (and Slavin on his off side) on the right doesn't leave a lot of opportunity. To go through the grind of getting back into shape, etc...only to get spotty playing time would be a tough sell for a guy like Gleason.

Yeah, he had his ups and downs, but Tim Gleason was a good player for this team for quite a while, and we should be grateful for that. Good luck to him in his next life.

Anyone know where to get a jersey lettered/numbered for less than the $80 they're charging at The Eye?

Good question there man. I got a Hanifin jersey on Friday with the Black Friday deal they had going at the eye, and even with the jersey half off it still ended up being about 140 even after the STH discount on the lettering.
