Sweden: physical players, powerforwards, gritty play.

:dunno:

Nopes. Swedish players are extremely smart, slightly above average skaters with two-way ability and great technique.

Physical and gritty? That's the first time I've heard some one say that is a typical thing for swedish players.

Russia...Skillful individuals who dont like physical hockey. Look for passes instead of shots.

Czech...Fairly skilled but lack of mentality neither likes physicality. Are a bit ON/OFF
like Russians. Also often lack workethic in their own zone, specially forwards. Look for break out passes and odd man rushes. Has always used the same system where they only use the right side for attacking.

Canada...Hard nosed goals scorers, play simple but effective hockey. Very physical.

Sweden...Very defensive minded and fairly good team players and also good tactical players. Never really has amazing talent or anything flashy or fast, but relys on allround play. Good coaching often makes the team better than it really is.

Usa...Often young, skilled, gritty and hungry but hasnt really been as impressive in men as in juniors.

Slovakia...Has a few high end induviduals and rest relys on good teamplay, a lot of veterans.

So... Bäckström, Zetterberg and Lidström don't have amazing talent? How about Loui Eriksson? The Sedins?

So essentially, do you think there are any national player types? That one country seems to produce more and better players of that single type then others?

Of course all countries produce all kinds of players, but are there majorities? Trends?

For example,

Finnish goaltenders

Slovak defenders (I'd give anything to have one of those in the Finnish WC team right now)

Czech skill attackers (puck control)

North American power forwards

Swedish coaches

Russian snipers

Or think of it this way, if there'd exist a global team with free pick on nationalities / players, from which country would you first look for players for certain roles?

Agree? Disagree?
Discuss! :handclap:

When I think of finnish players, I think of hard working two way players. Just like Germany right now.

Swedish coahes are idiots. They can't pick the best players and never actively coach during the games, they just roll the lines and use defensive specialists on the PP ahead of offensive experts..

Seems to work just fine =P

Great idea for a thread. I think the czech national player type (forward-wise) is one who is skilled stickhandler, a great passer, but not such a great shot or physical player. Also, if the juniors are anything to go by, a poor skater too :(

It's funny how perceptions change, back in the 90s you always thought "Finland could have a shot if only they had a great goalie". I mean guys like Myllys or Tammi weren't terrible but really nothing special.

Then suddenly, one Finnish NHL goalie after another appeared..

Finland: offensively skilled d-men who can't play D. Examples (who all played in Frölunda): Niskala, Mäenpää, Söderholm, Seikola.

Oh, there's absolutely an archetypal Finnish forward: a hardworking, fast skating, quite skillful and absolutely disciplined team player with a big heart whose only defect is that he can't score to save his life...

Can I just bloody rest my case here...

If sweden and Finland are on the same level of physicality... There needs to be a step in between good and great... Norway is not also better physically than Finland..

Oh yes they are. You guys beat us on skill. Remember that 2-2 OT game. We were in it because of Physical play.

Typical definition for the Swiss team would be : asleep on the job, careless, comatose, dallying, dilatory, drowsy, dull, flagging, idle, inattentive, indifferent, indolent, inert, lackadaisical, laggard, lagging, languid, languorous, lethargic, lifeless, loafing, neglectful, out of it, passive, procrastinating, remiss, shiftless, slack, sleepy, slothful, slow, slow-moving, snoozy, somnolent, supine, tardy, tired, torpid, trifling, unconcerned, unenergetic, unindustrious, unpersevering, unready, weary, anesthetic, cold, coldhearted, dull, impassive, indolent, insensible, insensitive, languid, lazy, lifeless, listless, passionless, slow, sluggish, spiritless, torpid, unemotional, unkind, bum around, dally, diddle-daddle, dilly-dally, drag, fool around, fritter away, get no place fast, goof off, hang around, hang out, idle, lag, laze, loaf, loiter, loll, lounge, mosey, poke, procrastinate, put off, saunter, scrounge around, shlep along, sit around, sit on one's butt, stay, stroll, tarry, toddle, trifle, wait, warm a chair.

All this, result in overconfidence in the Norway game and a loss.

Poor whiny whiner.

Finns: Humble type of persons. Hard working 2-way players and fairly good playmakers with no goal scoring abilities.

Selänne, last of his kind.
