The only nickname I would give a line is if it was Bennett-Crosby-Hornqvist, and I would call that the "Horny Kid with a Beauner" line.

Is it me or are Pens fans particularly obsessed with giving players nicknames?

Sid, Geno, Duper, Flower, Scuds, Tanger, Staalsy, Brooksie, ...

Maybe it's a Pittsburgh thing?

Big Ben, Silverback, The Bus, Mean Joe, Big Snack, Slash, Cutch, Grilled Cheese...

Do other cities do this or is it something in the Three Rivers water?

I think it's just you.

Sid = Abbreviation of Sidney. He was "Sid the Kid" long before he was a Penguin.
Geno = Americanized "Yevgeni," which is a weird name to pronounce in English.
Duper = Sure, that's a nickname, not sure if it originated here or elsewhere.
Flower = Ditto ^
Scuds = Abbreviation of a three syllable last name. Pretty common.
Tanger = I don't hear him called this too often. He's usually Letang.
Staalsy/Brooksie = Hardly nicknames, really.

I don't think we assign nicknames to our players more/less than fans of any other team.

every hockey player ever has had the 'part of last name'-y or -er sound. Its not even a nickname, its just how hockey players talk

Hockey players are obsessed with nicknames.

See also: hockey slang. They have a different word for everything, it seems.

In my opinion, there have only been a handful of truly great line-names. Also, I hate to say it because of the team, but the greatest line-name ever was the "Legion of Doom." Great line, great name, very fitting name, sounds cool.........it had everything.

I just did a search for words containing K C H
these are the four results:

backchat
backchats
cockchafer
cockchafers

I'm not so sure the Penguins organization would back those.

I'm not denying that hockey players call each other by nicknames a lot. They're friends/teammates. But origination of the nicknames aside, I feel like we (myself included) refer to players by their nicknames an awful lot. I've been called out a few times by multiple non-Pens fan friends for using nicknames to refer to players. Not criticizing or anything; just observing ;)
