1. Washington Capitals-- Alexander Ovechkin-future star, no question who even gets drafted at Number 1.

2. Pittsburgh Penguins -- Evgeni Malkin-consensus number 2, and gives Pitt a stud on all three lines of the ice. Fleury in goal, Orpik on D, and Malkin at center.

3. Carolina Hurricanes via Chicago -- Cam Barker-desperate need to refill their D cupboards will be a fixture for a long time playing next to anton babchuk.

4. Columbus Blue Jackets --Lauri Tukonen-take a shot on the big strong finn. He will look great next opposite either Nash or Zherdev. Although they would love to get a center here you can't pass up Tukonen and his hard work.

5. Phoenix Coyotes --Andrew Ladd- a scoring winger to provide punch oppososite of Doan.A solid player, with size for the yotes.

6. New York Rangers --Drew Stafford-the first real reach of the draft. Sather takes the team in a team first direction. Stafford known for his hard work will set a good example for future players on this team. A bit of a reach, but scared off by the concussion of Olesz.

7. Florida Panthers --Rostislav Olesz- the cats take a chance on him, and will look at a future of packing a one two punch of Olesz and Weiss.

8. Carolina -- Ladislav Smid- a bit of a reach here, but Carolina likes him better than Thelen and see him as a better overall player. With the core of their d moving past their prime they make this selection.

9. Anaheim Mighty Ducks -- Alexandre Picard- Just can't pass on this hardworking winger from Quebec. Has shown a thirst to work very hard, and seems to lead by example. Ducks hope he is ready when Rucchin moves on.

10. Atlanta Thrashers -- Kyle Chipchura- has 2nd line potential, but solid in all facets of the game. The drafting of him will eventually give the Thrashers a chance to give Stefan more ice time, and try and get his offense going.

11. Los Angeles Kings -- Al Montoya-with the cupboards bare here, they are interested in him and Schwarz. They go for the WJC gold medal winner, and are thrilled to grab him at this spot.

12. Minnesota Wild --Marek Schwarz-another team in search of a goalie prospect. With Rolason getting up in age, and Fernandez probably gone have to look towards the future in goal.

13. Buffalo Sabres --Aj Thelen-Slips a little more than expected and is taken happily by Regier. Will be a PP quarterback and look great next to Kalinin in a few years.

14. Edmonton Oilers --ALexander Radulov-looking for scoring on the wings Lowe is overjoyed to see this hard working russian still available. Loves him him on the wing on that nice wide open west.

15. Nashville Predators -- Wojtek Wolski- will fit right in on this hardworking squad, and his work ethic and ability are the MO of this team. No complaints from the Preds on this pick.

16. New York Islanders -- Robbie Schremp-looking for defense first MM almost creams himself as Schremp is available. MM not afraid to take a chance on him. Biggest slip of the draft, but high risk high reward.

17. St.Louis Blues --Enver LIsin-hopefully will be able to provide some scoring the in the future as their scoring woes were exploited this year. With Demitra probably gone, Lisin is a potential replacement for goals down the line.

18. Montreal Canadiens --David Bolland-looking for a center they take the kid from London of the OHL. Good at all facets of the game, and no really weakness. Great hockey smarts make him a Gainey favorite.

19. Calgary Flames -Devan Dubnyk- they aren't to convinced of Medvedev or Krahn in the future. THey take the big kid from Calgary and hopefully have more success than they did with Krahn the other calgary boy.

20. Dallas Stars --Andrej Meszarojs-in need of dmen with their top 3 coming close to UFA age. He is a solid skating Dman who will fit in the Western conference. Future top 3 dman. They look at Valabik but unsure about his skating ability.

21. Colorado Avalanche -- Jakub Sindel with the Forsberg future in question they go for the speedy center. They believe the speedy czech will be able to score in th NHL, and be able to use his superior speed to abuse Defenseman.

22. New Jersey Devils -- Lauri Korpikoski- they love the kid from Finald who was fantastic at the WU18. They consider him a steal at this point in the game.

23. Ottawa Senators -- Mike Green- they are looking for some more depth on D as they seem to be covered well up front. They see him as a fixture on the blueline with Volchenkov.

24. New York Rangers-- Wes O'Neill Sather stays in the college ranks and goes with the big kid from Notre Dame. He likes Wes O'neills game and likes him opposite of Tytuin.

25. Edmonton Oilers-- Boris Valabik- the D purge continues this draft as they add the Monster Valabik. Concerned about his skating, they will give him time to develop in juniors. Now have him and Semenov as the towers on the back line.

26. Vancouver Canucks -- Roman Volshenko- Looking for a skilled forward they take the belarussian. Might not be a shooter, but will be able to run a PP unit with his crafty smart play.

27. Washington Capitals -- Bruce Graham- Mchpee likes his size and potential upside. A bit of a reach this early, but prefers the big canaidan over the Finn Nokelainen.

28. San Jose Sharks -- Johan Fransson- with the D aging they look to Sweden for a solid d man, they look at him and Lyamin. They choose Fransson who is a year older then Lyamin and might be closer to the NHL.

29. Tampa Bay Lightning -- Corey Schneider- looking ahead seeming to be set on D and at forward for a time to come they look at the net. WIth Khabibulin aging, and same with Grahame they look to the kid who was great at the WU18.

30. Washington Capitals -- Lukas Kaspar-- they love the talent of Kaspar, and would love to see him opposite Ovechkin on the PP in the future. Loads of talent here, but some questions about willingness to pay the price.

The Rangers WILL NOT pass on Olesz, there is zero chance, he will be a Ranger if he falls to #6. But, I love the Rags 2nd pick.

Aging D? Brother you better do some better research before making a comment like that. I'm not sayin the Sharks go D (I doubt its Fransson but you never know) but there are other guys available that I hear the Sharks are high on.

Because Harding has no shot at the future? I'm not saying a goalie is out of the question (well, in the first round I'm tempted to say a goalie is out of the question for the Wild), but I think if we're going to pick based on need (which Risebrough has said he doesn't like to do), we're going for someone with some offense.

WOW!!! Does Chicago ever get screwed on that deal. j/k I realize #3 actually goes to Chicago because the Babchuk reference.

7. Florida Panthers --Rostislav Olesz

Olesz goes to NYR. Keenan would probably take Stafford though.

12. Minnesota Wild --Marek Schwarz

Don't think Minny takes a goalie at 12. Maybe they will trade down if they're going to.

19. Calgary Flames -Devan Dubnyk

Noooooooo! As a Flames fan, I want no part of another big, first round goalie.

25. Edmonton Oilers-- Boris Valabik

They already have Semenov, might take a smaller defenseman (Fransson, Lyamin, etc.)

Voloshenko is supposed to be a goal-scorer.

Aging D? Stuart - 24, Hannan - 25, Rathje - 30, McLaren - almost 27, Preissing - 25, Jim Fahey - 25, Davison - 22, Ehrhoff - almost 22. One guy over 27, besides Marshall who was a playoff rental. Sharks will probably make another surprise pick, ie. Morris, Goc.

Schremp at 16? I don't know but Atlanta may take him if he falls to number 10 because he's too good to pass up there.
I think the Kings will take Schwarz over Montoya.
I also think that Chippy at 10 is too high, I think he'll fall into the 15-18 range. Personally I hope Montreal gets him though.
I like that all 4 of the top goalies go round 1, like they should...But Calgary doesn't need another goalie for a couple years with Kipper at 27. They should be set until next draft at least, even at backup.
San Jose's D is hardly aging, although I do like the idea of them taking Lyamin or Fransson...

If Shremp and Dubnyk are available at #14, the Oilers will take one of them, especially Shremp. I just don't see the Oilers taking someone from Russia and it's nothing against Russia.

I would LOVE O'Neill to be available at #24 for the Rangers. I don't think Olesz slips by the Rangers at #6, however.

Minnesota will take a goaltender in the later rounds. Johan Holmqvist and Josh Harding are possible goaltenders for their future.

If the Wild are counting on Holmqvist to be a goalie of the future then I hope they do take a G in round 1.

Holmqvist is going to be used as a backup with Roloson. a slight number 1 when Harding gets there until he is ready. He is a stretch at a number 1 goaltender but he'll split time with Harding.
