Blues won't have the cap space to re-sign Pietrangelo until March 1st.

I think you are 100% correct on this. I suspect we resign Mikheyev 4x3 and they go after another KHL import, Grigorenko for our 3 C as there was some talks that there is mutual interest.

We go hard in the offseason after Pietro. Korskov likely plays a role on our forth line and we seriously look at Robertson on our third line with a sprinkling of PP time.

    Hyman Matthews Marner
    Mikheyev JT Nylander
    Robertson Grigorenko Kapanen
    Engvall Spezza Korskov

    Reilly Pietrangelo
    Muzzin Liljegren
    Sandin Holl

    Andersen
    Campbell

The Blues are very tight to being over the cap next season with a signed Pietrangelo. On March 1st the available tagging space is increased by 10%, so teams can start operating similar to the offseason's 110% cap for re-signing their players.

if Pietrangelo want to stay in STL, he will stay for sure... Blues will just trade something like a 1st pick with Bozak or steen to create some cap space and STL get his money to keep pietrangelo

It's an overpay if it's more than $0 in most cases

He doesn't make mistakes. He talks in enough vague platitudes and airy noncommittal innuendo that he can just walk back whatever he was wrong about and claim victory whatever actually happens. It's a very obvious and grating schtick.

True but he is also a RHD vs. A LHD, furthermore he wants to stay here. Plus it may only be one year but Myers is younger too. Lastly the TML have the ability to provide signing bonus. If he has his residency status as US then this would be huge for him.

I actually think 5x5 is a pretty fair deal for both parties. He likely stays as the second pairing D for the next two season and is pushed down by Sandin by year three. He is protected for the expansion draft.

Muzzin makes 4.5M in real dollars right now. I doubt he's going to bypass the best opportunity in his career for a big payday, his leverage and value is the highest it's ever been. Player salaries normally increase from year to year, so to have a AAV in the low-mid 5's he would have to take a pay cut, which isn't going to happen.

He's not going to break the bank, but I see his salary next year in the low to mid 5's and going up from there.

Doesn't sound like you are impressed with Muzzin. I was kind of hoping he got to UFA. Be a good fit for Habs.

I don't see $5.5 million as an overpay. If you look at a lot of the contracts for defenseman who are considered #2/#3 defensemen, that's about the going rate.

If anything, the 4 year term might be a bigger issue in the final year or two of it. A guy who is going to be 31 years old (32 years old halfway through the first year of the extension) and plays a physical game could see his game fall off a cliff in his early to mid 30s. But the actual dollar amount is what you'd expect for someone that caliber.

I'm not impressed with signing average players to long term deals

I think you swing for the fences with high-end talent like Matthews, Marner, Tavares, etc. and then fill out the rest of the roster with vets and youngsters making the league minimum

Normally I would agree but he fits that #3 spot perfectly. If hes reasonable on cap & term (5x5ish) then its worth it for the leafs to retain him.

Then you lose in the playoffs once it turns out that goals scored by other teams' competent 3rd and 4th lines against your league min junk go on the score sheet just like goals scored by your star players

A poster is in denial that dubas overpays everyone and then lies claiming that's not the case.

Well his value is probably 4.5-5m, so the leafs must be offering 7-8 million.

At the time of checking yesterday that was not the case but I see he scored a goal in the loss to Dallas.

Regardless, the second highest paid player barely scraping by for 10th place in points?

That doesn't add up which translates to being overpaid.
