Over the weekend I watched Sunshine (2007) a Danny Boyle Sci-Fi film. It was really good and I never heard of it before.

The story is interesting. A good cast and plot - the idea is that a crew is sent to the sun to re-ignite it in the future when it starts dying out. A lot of research and planning went into the script with scientists consulted. I would give it an 8/10

What are some of your favourite Sci-fi movies that are a must watch?

You have a few very good films in there. I'll probably have to come back to it, but from the top of my head, some other must-see films:

Videodrome
Je t'aime, je t'aime
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
(1978)
L'invenzione di Morel
Stalker
Slaughterhouse-Five

A few others I missed:

1. Twelve Monkeys
2. Monsters
3. Primer
4. A Scanner Darkly
5. The Martian
I'm assuming your Solaris pick back there was the Russian version by Tarkovsky.

Came to see if anyone was going to mention Primer. No movie has ever f'ed with my head so much.

I remember years ago watching it twice, then trying to explain it to my roommate and realizing halfway through my explanation that I was completely wrong.

Four of the best "sci-fi" films I know are Eternal Sunshine, About Time, A Clockwork Orange, and The Truman Show but I don't really consider these to be sci-fi. Sci-fi is a tertiary genre in all of them I guess. Anyways, here's my faves, I think I've seen almost all the ones mentioned in the thread so far (excluding Gattaca, shit) and most of them are good but if we're talking 'must-watch'.

Inception
Fail-Safe
Interstellar
About Time
Arrival
Blade Runner 2049
Contact
Ex-Machina
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Day The Earth Caught Fire
District 9
Jumper (shutup)
The Martian
The Prestige
Terminator 2

Similar to you and Sunshine (thanks for the recommendation, BTW; I'll check it out), I had somehow never heard of 2009's Moon until a year or two ago and ended up loving it. After I reviewed it here, a couple of other people watched it for the first time, as well, and also loved or at least really liked it. I guess that it was a real sleeper. Sci-fi fans shouldn't miss it, IMO.

The only thing I didn't like about Moon was the soundtrack. Actually, I liked the soundtrack at first, but I guess there wasn't much of a music budget, so it repeated. A lot.

The movie itself was great.

My all-time faves are already listed, so I'll go with one that gave me a pure visceral jolt. The original War of the Worlds was the very first sci-fi film I ever saw. It was on TV late at night when I was a kid and the Martian ships and sound effects terrified me. Kinda cheesy in retrospect, although full marks for a clever ending that was ahead of its time.

I never liked Sam Rockwell until Moon. He found his groove with that film and has been great ever since.

I'd throw in Children of Men.

What a shame A.I. Artificial Intelligence had that utterly moronic, soul-destroying schlock ending. Coulda been a contenduh.

Most of my favourites have already been listed, but I really enjoyed Predestination, even if the ending was a bit predictable.

A lesser known one I saw recently was The Endless, which exists in the same universe of another sci-fi film, Resolution. I thought that was an fun Easter egg.

That's hilarious. I'm a big fan of Clint Mansell.

He ended up contributing to Mass Effect 3 as well.
