My honest assessment is he is definitely a #5 -6, but can be moved up to the top 4 temporarily when needed. I am not sure if you want him in the top 4 permanently. He is a good shot blocker and can PK.

I saw this on the Blues board. Whoever JFresh is, that is a pretty hot take. Edmundson is inconsistent, but he is very far from "one of the Leagues worst defensemen".

Agreed. I see it two ways:

    1. Habs are not very popular with top UFAs and tend to strike out.

    2. High profile UFAs are usually overpaid. At this point in time, that would mess up the cap structure of this team.

So even if one was willing to sign, it may not help the team. Maybe those solid but unspectacular signings give more bang for your buck.

One thing I trust Julien to do is get the best out of his big defensemen. Chiarot has looked very good, Kulak has impressed (at times). No defender has looked bad in this system. Mete is the one struggling the most and I believe his size is a factor in this. I'm not sure Krug would have had the impact his cap hit would indicate.

The Blues coaching staff thought something similar. Not necessarily "one of the worst," but they obviously decided they couldn't trust him in the series against Boston and then dealt him.

MB hoping to create another Chiarot success story. Will see but we still need. PMD and PP specialist.

the good news is this should end the idiotic Graves/Zadorov to Habs for Danault.

It’s not a great signing but Edmondson is nowhere near as bad as recent stats make him out to be, he’s easily an NHL level third pairing dman.

I do enjoy how multiple posters who have never seen him play just link to random tweets with charts and stats as if they know anything about player evaluation.

Thing happened with the Chiarot signing. I was convinced he would suck. Then he didn’t.

exactly, like when Chiarot was at best a 6-7th D man.

Thing is, now we have guys who can defend smaller players like Caufield or future forwards we might now interest....

Not everyone wants to fight and if Drouin, Petry or others can just play instead of getting hurt by some over-enthusiastic 4th liner they might just be able to actually make points instead of being on ir?

I'm confident that Richardson (def coach) can work with him like he did with Chiarot and Kulak. No, it's not gonna make a top 2 guy with him but I'm sure a 27yo real athlete with size/weight and WILLING to have the best years of his career here and now... who knows... an Ok physical 4th at best but Ok is good...

I like the idea he might protect Romanov too... Anyway, FA market for LD was weak this year so, not wow but really not bad if he's used right.

Habs zone system fits his game much better than the Canes man to man D system. If he sucks in Montreal then he is a really bad dman.

The way things are going I think teams are going to hit a wall come free agency when it really starts to catch up. Hopefully it makes for some more exciting trades in the offseason.

Not necessarily. If you were to sign Hall you could sell Tatar for futures . If we could sign hall for 9 which he won’t do , you sell Tatar for picks . 9-5 =4 increase . You would still have six left

Exactly. Take a def with good stats and put it in a different system and the stats could show a real bad player where it's just a bad fit for that player.

Hopefully he'll fit in fine in #4 this year and be pushed on #5 when Romanov takes off. Then it's either trade capital or we have a real solid D for when Primeau takes 2nd goalie spot after the Seattle expansion picks.

I feel these days before Seattle and with covid compressed schedule are gonna play like a chess game... whoever thinks 4-5 shots in advance may be reaaaly well positionned for the upcomming season and the next 2-3.

I could see the D being,

    Chiarot - Weber
    Edmundson - Petry
    Mete - Romanov
    Kulak - Juulsen

which likely means the PP will suck again baring a trade for more firepower up front.

I wish people would understand that Edmundson's advanced stats are not good because he played extremely hard minutes. He started in the d-zone more than any other Carolina dman, including Slavin, and did a TON of defensive heavy lifting.

I don’t see what the big deal is. I figured he’d be shooting for 4x4 in UFA, for his big pay day as a defensive D. If he gets back to the Eddy of a few years ago, this is a nice contract. Even if he’s meh to sucky, 3.5 isn’t that bad. people just like to rip on Montreal.

Yes indeed . The same ones who rip bergevin now will give it to him again if he gets taken by Seattle even though it will have cost a 5th .

Dmen were never the problem with Habs PP. Weber has been on some good PPs over the years. Get is a sniper, let Suzuki develop a bit more (his patience will be key) and the PP should improve quite a bit. Without that sniper though the whole thing falls apart regardless.

With the loss of Markov, finding real PP QBs is a real problem. Petty and Weber are not high caliber QBs .
