Kane's GAR from taking penalties is not only worst on the team, it's comfortably the worst in the league.

Do you maintain almost every PIM he's been awarded is righteous enough that this stat factoring this detrimental effect of his discipline is a justifiable reason to hold him accountable? (Obviously last night's benching was unrelated to penalties, but accountable in general)

Not taking a swing at your passion for in depth stat analysis, I recognise you're answering a question posed that you're best suited to responding to & *insert deity here* knows i've cussed Kane to the rafters for some of his egregious ones, but the fact he's being nailed by refs like he's the offspring of Torres doesn't reflect what i'm watching. Or am I simply buying into the victim/bias he's selling?

What message was being sent? His lackadaisical play leading to NYR's 2nd? When he had bailed out the D before Panarin poked it loose, don't get me wrong I yelled on 1st look when i thought he passed it infront, on 2nd look sure he was careless but we're sitting one of our only legit scoring threats while letting Sore-nson continue to fudge play after play after play?

So the message to Kane is you have to be better, but Sorenson can play like a hump all he likes & we don't care about that?

TBH I didn't think Kane's goof ups were that bad compared to the general ineffectiveness of the team on defense - 4/5 guys down low and the Rangers were still wide open. And after the PDB era, I am wary of such bold ingame lineup tweaks.

But, for now I'm okay with it. I think Boughner hit two birds with one stone. It challenges Kane to evolve because for all his talent, two small details can cost two goals. Maybe this is the moment where Kane gets laser focused on the details and takes his game up a notch. He is the best active player who's here long term, so it may be worth working on him.

And it also sends a message to the rest of the roster. If the most complete player on the roster is getting punished, then no one is safe. If the other guys are losing all the 1v1 battles, they better at least skate harder - and I think they did that. Guys like Labanc, Burns, Vlasic, Meier seemed to put in a bit more effort.

I do think Kane has bad calls go against him more so than the average player, but I think that is mostly due to a reputation that he has largely earned. I do think most of what you're seeing is you buying into the victim/bias that he is selling.

The other thing that's interesting is his play style is in deep contrast to the rest of the team. He will take the hit, he will run you, Dillon was the only player on the team that played even close to the same brand of hockey. It's easy to pick out your transgressions when the rest of your team is pealing off hits and avoiding scrums

Not good.

Here's the whole team:

His overall GAR is 2, which is worth less than half of a win above replacement. His GAR is being heavily propped up by PP offense, which is IMO not sustainable going forward.

GAR is one stat where a player's terrible penalty differential actually comes into play, and the value of it is quantified. Kane's GAR from taking penalties is not only worst on the team, it's comfortably the worst in the league.

Love that Hertl. Also love that Suomela is constantly a healthy scratch.
