I am just curious if anyone knows the following:

Who scored the most points with 0 goals scored?
Who scored the most points with 5 goals or less?
Who scored the most points with 10 goals or less but more than 5 goals?
Who scored the most points with 20 goals or less but more than 10 goals?

  • Zero goals - Jimmy Thomson had a season with no goals, 29 assists.
  • One to five goals - Borje Salming had 5 goals, 61 assists (66 points).
  • Six to ten goals - Henrk Sedin had 10 goals, 71 assists (81 points).
  • Eleven to twenty goals - Adam Oates had 20 goals, 79 assists (99 points).
Jimmy Thomson's "record" has stood more than 70 years.

I was looking at some junior numbers today and noticed a young player with something like 12 GP and 6 goals with zero assists.

I wonder what the "record" is for most goals in a season with zero assists both in the NHL and elsewhere.

Maybe a slightly larger look at most goals with 5 or 10 assists.

To the 2nd part Peter Bondra with 34 goals (led the NHL that year) and only 9 assists is the first one that comes to mind.

That's 3.78 goals / assist.

Joe Malone had 44 goals and 4 assists in the 1917-18 season

I guess I should have clarified my question to the modern era when assists are regularly given out.

In 17-18 Malone's Habs team scored 115 goals and a total of 38 assists were awarded.

So in context Bondra still has him beat big time.

I think you have to use of a cut-off of, say, 1930. Otherwise the list would be dominated by players from the earliest years of the NHL, when very few assists were awarded.

The "modern" regular season record belongs to Dan Quinn (yes, the same player who was Lemieux's winger during his 1988 and 1989 campaigns). In 1994, he scored 7 goals, 0 assists in 13 games (six of which were assisted by the rookie Alexei Yashin).

Actually, the real modern record belongs to Chris Kontos in the 1989 playoffs - nine goals in eleven games (five of which were assisted by Gretzky). Strange career - he had 27 goals in his first 164 regular season games. Then he played for the (awful) expansion Lightning in 1993, and scores another 27 goals in one year (66 games). Then he's out of the NHL, age 29.

Yeah, apples to oranges comparison. A recent example is Jeff Carter's 26 goals, but only 7 assists in 2013.

Or even better, Brandon Pirri's 22 goals and 2 assists in 2014-15

He did not have 0 assists but Ovechkin got 50 goals and 21 assists in 2015-16, which is a 29 points differential!

Wow never would have guessed Dan Quinn who was quite balanced offensively.
