Gretzky had 8 in a game 3 times, I believe.
And he had seven in a game on many occasions. So many that the NHL Guide and Record book stopped listing them all in 1991.

There have been lots of six-point games over the years. Usually happens a couple times a year now. What I want to know is who was the last player to get seven? Was it Lemieux in 1992-93? And who was the last player to hit eight? Coffey in 1985-86 is the last I can remember, but I know it's happened since then, right?

I remember Patrick Sundstrom and Mario Lemieux scored eight points in a post-season game in 1988 and 1989, respectively.

Trottier holds the record for points in a period with five, I believe.

We all know that Sittler has 10 points in onegame

Mats Sundin has 6
As does Dougie Gilmour

is there a list of 5 and more point nights per team anywhere?

I am not sure of 5+ points but the Official NHL Guide and Register lists 8+ points.

Sittler had 10 on 2/7/76. There were 12 instances, entering this season, of 8 points in a game (exactly 9 has never occurred) during the regular season.

The players with 8:

Maurice Richard (Montreal) 12/44; Bert Olmstead (Montreal) 1/54; Tom Bladon (Philadelphia) 12/77; Bryan Trottier (NYI) 12/78; Peter Stastny (Quebec) 2/81; Anton Stastny (Quebec) 2/81 (same game as Peter); Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton) 11/83; Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton) 1/84; Paul Coffey (Edmonton) 3/86; Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh) 10/88; Bernie Nicholls (LAK) 12/88; Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh) 12/88. All were done in home games except the two Stastny feats.

Also, the record for most points in a road game is 8 by Peter Stastny and Anton Stastny. Exactly seven points in a road game has been done 14 times.

There have been twelve 8 point nights in NHL history.

Maurice Richard - 12/28/1944 - first
Tom Bladon - 12/11/77
Peter Stastny - 2/22/81
Anton Stastny - 2/22/81
Paul Coffey - 3/14/86
Mario Lemieux - 12/31/88 most recent

There are six others, of which I think three are Gretzky.

Trottier does hold the record for points in a period with 6.

EDIT: ******* above beat me to the punnch. :D

I don't know when the last 7 point game was, but Jagr scored 7 points (3G,4A) on Jan. 11, 2003 vs. Florida and 7 points (3G,4A) on Dec. 30, 1999 vs. the Islanders.

You can really see how much the game has changed from the early days. It seems like the star players would almost score at will way back in the olden days of hockey.

didn't Patrick Sundstrom for New Jersey get 6 or 8 points in 1 playoff game in the late 1980's??

Yes. Most points in a playoff game is 8 done twice. He had 8 on 4/22/88 for New Jersey in a game vs. Washington. Mario Lemieux had 8 in 1987 Game 5 against the Flyers in Pittsburgh. Wayne Gretzky had 7 three times (the only player to have exactly 7) in the playoffs: 1983 (Calgary), 1985 (Winnipeg) and 1987 (LAK).

Most assists in one playoff game is 6 by Mikko Leinonen, NYR 4/8/82 over Philly and Gretzky on 4/9/87 for Edmonton over LAK.

Most goals in a playoff game is 5 done 5 times, most recently by Lemieux in the game against Philly listed above.

The numbers listed in other posts are regular season only.

I might be wrong, but back in the 20s, line changing was barely used. Teams usually had the same five skaters play pretty well the whole game.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have left their mark in the NHL record books and NHL history with many firsts and other notable achievements. Odie Cleghorn, the Pirates' coach (and occasional player) for the first four seasons, was the first NHL coach to change his players on the fly. This was an ingenius idea. He was also the first coach to use three set forward lines, which was a huge change from the standard, which was to simply leave the best players out for as long as possible.

So back then, I think the same players would always score every game because they played most of the game. And thats why you've got so many big games from those early players.
