Yep, my bad, overlooked the added 5 yr and math portion.

Any idea why that 5 year limit is on this? seems prohibitive unnecessarily.

As others have mentioned, if deal is greater than 5 years, you still divide by 5. So given that, here are the minimum contracts that would get 4 1st round picks:

7 years x $6.706M
6 years x $7.824M
5 years x $9.388M

This times 1000! Dumba can be offer-sheeted in the $5M or so range (where it costs just a first and third) and put Minnesota in a bind. I'm surprised that Sweeney hasn't considered it.

Doesn't really put us in a bind at all. Hypothetically of course: We don't match & get the picks. Your team pays too much for a player I see as a pretty good #4-5D/PP triggerman. We still have Suter, Spurgeon, Brodin(who can play right side very well) & Scandella to round out our top 4. Sucks we would lose a rightie on the blueline, but I think we'd absorb the loss okay.
