It's so hard especially for casual fans who aren't super invested in advanced stats to determine statistically how good someone is defensively.

For example, I can pull up NHL.com and go to the stats page and look at things such as Short Handed TOI/gp, SH blocks/hits/takeaways/giveaways, normal blocks/hits/takeaways/giveaways. And then head over to hockeyreference.com to look at Corsi/Fenwick and zone start %.

But at the end of the day you're left with a bunch of assorted stats with not real way of weighing them in a useful manner, whereas if you just watched a few games, it's quite easy to see who is good defensively on your team.

The voters definitely look at takeaways, face off percentage and if the players play on the PK or not. Outside of that, reputation plays into it like any award. Some voters probably use advanced stats but not all of them

1. Reputation
2. +/-
3. Points
4. Team in playoffs
5. Center
*Bonus points if he plays PK regardless of how well.

Being star player. Have reputation of being good at defense. And score a lot of points...

Joke award, as every NHL trophy minus maybe Vezina and Calder...

In the current era the most important statistic is points. The award is now for the offensive player who is best defensively, rather than the best defensive forward.

There are few, if any, forwards I'd rather have in a key defensive situation than Datsyuk, Bergeron, Kopitar or Toews. There's a reason these guys also have collected some Cups.

The two most important :

1) The number of times you have been nominated for the award
2) The player's reputation around the league.

No joke, the Selke trophy is all about reputation.
Also, how close did you come to winning the Hart.

Seems as often as not, it's a consolation prize.

The award was literally created because there was a winger who was so good defensively they decided there should be an award for it.

Bob Gainey won the first four Selkes.

Hockey is different now

Wingers cover the point, centers play practically as a third dman down low

Aside from Kopitar last season, Selke winners are almost never Hart finalists. In the last 25 years only 2 Hart finalists have won the Selke and going back further probably sees even fewer Hart finalists since it used to go to much lower scoring players.

It certainly isn't a Hart consolations prize in recent years.

2018- Kopitar finished 3rd in Hart voting
2017- Bergeron didn't get a Hart vote
2016- Kopitar finished 8th in Hart voting (less than 4% of votes)
2015- Bergeron didn't get a Hart vote
2014- Bergeron finished 5th in Hart voting (10% of votes)
2013- Toews finished 4th in Hart voting (very close to being a finalist)
2012- Bergeron finished 18th in Hart voting (3 total votes)
2011- Kesler finished 8th in Hart voting (less than 6% of votes)
2010- Datsyuk didn't get a Hart vote

I always laugh when people whine about the Selke being a reputation award. You just know they cheer for a team whom has a good defensive player that just isn't quite at the level of these other guys.
Is there anyone out there that wouldn't have Bergeron as the first player over the boards in a defensive situation? - and it's not because people have heard his name more.

Personally I think Bergeron should've won two more but the only one I think was a reputation win in recent memory was Kesler as it was based more on the year prior than the season he won when he sniped 40 goals as they brought Maholtra in that year to do most of the defensive heavy-lifting.

-Points
-Player has a reputation of being great defensively
-Team makes the playoffs

For example, Alexander Barkov is building a media reputation for being a great two-way player. So, if his team ever makes the playoffs, he will have a good chance to win the Selke.
