Great rare photo of Tony O. Nothing - and I mean nothing - beats the look of the masks from the 60's to the mid 80's (before the ugly cages). Each mask actually had a personality, and that was without custom painting. When you add some paint to masks that were already distinct, they were amazing. Too bad they were about as protective as a balaclava.

Today's goalie masks are virtually space-aged and a culmination of generations of equipment science. But as far as aesthetics go, there is "zero" personality. They all look the same, and the customization is awful. Most of them are montages that are difficult to make out unless you have a close-up photo to study for a few minutes.

AMEN!!!

Maurice Richard seemed to age a lot from the mid-40s to the early-50s.

Unrelated question: Did/Could Doug Harvey speak French?
I know Toe Blake and Frank Selke did speak French, but no clue about the players.

Lots of interesting tidbits here... players facing off facing the sideboards as was the custom up until 1943-44... goal net appears to be flush against the end boards?... corner board more squared off, just slightly rounded on the end panels... fans seated right up to the boards with no protective glass(!)... some choice balcony seating... amazing pic!

Love the City Band up in the Mezzanine. Wish I could go back in time just to be there and see this.
