Revolution kick off their 2019 season today at Dallas. (4:30, NBC Sports Boston)
Newcomers to watch:
- Spanish midfielder Carles Gil has spent most of his career in the Premier League (Aston Villa) and La Liga (Sevilla, Deportivo La Conuna) before the Revs made him the most expensive transfer in club history. He's expected to be play in the middle of the field as the team's playmaker. Basically, they want him to be their David Krejci.
- Former US National Team left back Edgar Castillo came in a trade with Colorado that cost the Revs fan favorite Kelyn Rowe. New England might have had the worst collection of left backs in the league last year, so it was a position of need. Castillo was one of the best left back in MLS last year.
- Colombian forward Juan Fernando Caicedo was signed to score goals. He scored 11 of them last year in the Colombian League, but his overall goal-scoring record is mixed. The team has raved about his ability to finish - a real problem for the Revs last year. Caicedo may not play today, as he's been battling a nagging injury in camp.
- 19-year old Hamilton, Mass. native Justin Rennicks signed a Homegrown Player Contract after spending two years at Indiana, leading the Hoosiers to the College Cup Semifinals. He's also a near lock to miss some time this year with the US National Team at the Under-20 World Championships. A forward/winger, Rennicks reportedly had a very impressive training camp.
- New England's 1st round draft pick this year was 20-year old Tajon Buchanan out of Syracuse. Big, athletic, and skilled, Buchanan is expected to be in the mix in a crowded group of fowards/midfielders that includes Caicedo, Rennicks, fellow first round pick DeJuan Jones, as well as returnees Christian Penilla, Diego Fagundez, Teal Bunbury, and Juan Agudelo.
The Revs have also been very vocal about the fact that they're trying to sign a 2nd player to a Designated Player contract. If you're unaware, each team is allowed to sign three "Designated Players" to contracts that exceed the league's maximum player salary limit. Head Coach Brad Friedel said earlier this week that the club is in daily negotiations with three players.
For what it's worth, the "experts"
hate the Revolution this year. There are 24 teams in the league this year with the addition of FC Cincinnati, and I think the highest I've seen them ranked is 19th. Then again, many of these same experts predicted Toronto win the league last year, and they didn't even make the playoffs.
Still, Dallas is a young team with a rookie Head Coach, so this might be a chance to steal a result. Would be nice to bring some positive momentum into next Saturday's home opener against Columbus.
