Fairly big news from the Revolution, who just signed Spanish playmaker Carles Gil from Spanish Segunda's Deportivo La Coruna in a club record $2.0 million transfer. Gil is 26 years old and has played in the Premier League for Aston Villa, as well as LaLiga for Valencia, Elche, and Deportivo La Coruna before they were relegated last Spring.

“He’s very technical on the ball and he’s a creator,” Revolution GM Michael Burns said in a media release. “He’s an attacking midfielder, a number-10 type player. I think he’s going to add a dimension to our team that we don’t currently have and hopefully make all the players around him a little bit better."

Some highlights of Gil's time with Aston Villa:

Revolution kick off their 2019 season today at Dallas. (4:30, NBC Sports Boston)

Newcomers to watch:
  • Spanish midfielder Carles Gil has spent most of his career in the Premier League (Aston Villa) and La Liga (Sevilla, Deportivo La Conuna) before the Revs made him the most expensive transfer in club history. He's expected to be play in the middle of the field as the team's playmaker. Basically, they want him to be their David Krejci.
  • Former US National Team left back Edgar Castillo came in a trade with Colorado that cost the Revs fan favorite Kelyn Rowe. New England might have had the worst collection of left backs in the league last year, so it was a position of need. Castillo was one of the best left back in MLS last year.
  • Colombian forward Juan Fernando Caicedo was signed to score goals. He scored 11 of them last year in the Colombian League, but his overall goal-scoring record is mixed. The team has raved about his ability to finish - a real problem for the Revs last year. Caicedo may not play today, as he's been battling a nagging injury in camp.
  • 19-year old Hamilton, Mass. native Justin Rennicks signed a Homegrown Player Contract after spending two years at Indiana, leading the Hoosiers to the College Cup Semifinals. He's also a near lock to miss some time this year with the US National Team at the Under-20 World Championships. A forward/winger, Rennicks reportedly had a very impressive training camp.
  • New England's 1st round draft pick this year was 20-year old Tajon Buchanan out of Syracuse. Big, athletic, and skilled, Buchanan is expected to be in the mix in a crowded group of fowards/midfielders that includes Caicedo, Rennicks, fellow first round pick DeJuan Jones, as well as returnees Christian Penilla, Diego Fagundez, Teal Bunbury, and Juan Agudelo.
The Revs have also been very vocal about the fact that they're trying to sign a 2nd player to a Designated Player contract. If you're unaware, each team is allowed to sign three "Designated Players" to contracts that exceed the league's maximum player salary limit. Head Coach Brad Friedel said earlier this week that the club is in daily negotiations with three players.

For what it's worth, the "experts" hate the Revolution this year. There are 24 teams in the league this year with the addition of FC Cincinnati, and I think the highest I've seen them ranked is 19th. Then again, many of these same experts predicted Toronto win the league last year, and they didn't even make the playoffs.

Still, Dallas is a young team with a rookie Head Coach, so this might be a chance to steal a result. Would be nice to bring some positive momentum into next Saturday's home opener against Columbus.

Whole team was shaky for the first 30 minutes or so. Thought the Revs were the better team over the last 60 minutes. With as bad as they've been on the road the past two years, I'll take the point. Really liked the looks of Carles Gil.

Robert Kraft’s Other Problem: Soccer

Not much new here if you follow the club, but interesting that the team's issues are being put under the microscope by the New York Times, of all outlets.

The one notable nugget of information is that the club intends to bring in a new signing in either May, or (...Lord, help us...) in the secondary transfer window, which begins in July. The season will be 2/3rds over by the end of July.

3 straight years of declining attendance (miserable 18K average for last year) and in last place of the East after 3 games. New year, same story.

MLS needs a relegation system. Maybe then the Revs would get even a small fraction of Kraft's attention.......or at least force him to sell to FSG or some other ownership group who actually wants to make them competitive again.

MLS WILL FOLD BEFORE pro/rel would ever get traction, doubtful FSG is interested, and is Fenway better as a pitch than Gillette, probably not

Don't forget the TeamOps security Gestapo Kraft has blessed everyone with. I still remember an incident after a game where a group of idiots tried to attack some of our (Red Bulls) fans going to our bus. One of the subhuman scumsucking savages that were employed as security went up to a f***ing guy in a wheelchair who just happened to be in the vicinity and MACED THE GUY RIGHT IN THE f***ING FACE. It was the most sick, vile and evil thing I have ever seen a "human being" do to someone else.

there could be an ownership change, there are rumblings about current broadcaster/former Revolution standout Taylor Twellman buying in to the Revolution in some form
MLS teams cost $200 million these days. A new stadium in Boston would probably cost another $500 million.

Taylor Twellman never made more than a couple hundred thousand dollars a year in MLS. There's no way he can afford to buy an MLS team. This is a pipe dream.
