I´ve noticed that the Senators prospect, Moscow Dynamo´s Igor Mirnov has really caught fire lately. Yesterday against Amur he scored a goal and had two assists. Meanwhile the highly touted Alexander Ovechkin, who also plays for Dynamo, has been quiet lately. I can´t help to wonder if Ovechkin is a tad overrated. He hasn´t really been that impressive in the RSL this year.

This Mirnov kid, however, seems like a steal for the Senators. It´s too bad he missed the WJC, so many people didn´t get to see him play.

Mirnov is a good prospect, and he may have been a 2nd round steal for the Sens, but he's not in Ovechkin's class based on what I've seen of Ovechkin (I've only read about Mirnov). Ovechkin is going to be a point a game player in the NHL someday, and has an upside beyond that.

With Ovechkin, it's simply a case of overanalysis. He's been on the radar screen for so long, ultimately people stop watching what makes him so good, and just start looking for chinks in his armour. The fact he is younger than Mirnov, should also not be forgotten.

To be honest, I would have rather seen the Sens move Mirnov and a 2nd for Bondra, rather than Laich (even though it's possible Mirnov has a tad more upside). I've also heard Kairgorodov (another Sens draft pick) is a better prospect than Mirnov.

Compare two guys at the same age in the same conditions. What was Mirnov doing at Ovechkin's age?
OK you get the picture.

Igor Mirnov - September 19, 1984
Alex Ovechkin - September 17, 1985

Point totals look like this...

2001-02
Mirnov 0 goals, 0 points 5 games
Ovechkin 2 goals, 4 points 22 games

2002-03
Mirnov 3 goals, 10 points in 50 games
Ovechkin 8 goals, 16 points in 40 games

2003-04
Mirnov 7 goals, 9 points in 33 games
Ovechkin 9 goals, 18 points in 30 games

The seasons were taken from Dynamo Moscow. Think his point is compare Ovechkin's 03-04 season with Mirnov's 02-03, and Ovechkins 02-03 with Mirnov's 01-02.

Not this guy, Laich will be a career 3rd liner, where as Mirinov looks like he has top 6 forward potential.

As far as the original question, is he better than Ovechkin? NO, but he could very well be the steal of his draft.
