No reason to touch Johansson - Hartman - Fiala.

I think you can switch out Rask for EK or Bonino. I'd prefer EK.

I could see Ek being given a try since he's faster than Bonino and honestly just a much better player as well. I agree that we leave the Fiala/Johansson/Hartman line alone since they are starting to gel together which is why I mentioned who would slip into Rask's spot. If you move Ek to that spot then who plays with Greenway?

I would throw Rask on the 4th and promote Sturm or Bjugstad.

I like this idea with Greenway in the middle.

Well, we have a new 6’2” skilled forward that has played center at our disposal now...

Thatcher Demko signed a 5x5 deal with Vancouver, which will probably factor in to a Kahkonen extension as a comparable player/situation next year.

Is there some kind of rule that I'm not aware of that requires the Canucks to constantly make terrible decisions with their goaltending?

Vancouver fans seem pretty happy about it.

I think he certainly has the ability to live up to it, but it's a question of whether or not they had to go that much money for that many years at this point. And it's a little bit annoying, because assuming Kahkonen continues to build on this season, and comes back better next season, there's going to be at least one specific example that his agent can point to and say, we want that, and he's earned that.

I think Shestyerkin and Sorokin contracts will be in the mix as well. Hard to say at this point. 5 x $5 makes me a little queasy, but it’s good we have another full season before having to ante up.

Sorokin is a weird situation, and I'm sure his next contract will be referenced too, but he also got a 1 year, 2M before having ever played an NHL game. He also, statistically, hasn't been as good as Kahkonen. Shesterkin is another decent comparable. If he ends up getting something similar to 5x5, we'll be in trouble.

Yeah, $5M would not be ideal just yet. Something would have to give with one (or two) of the Greenway/JEE/Foligno/Soucy/Hartman group, and that’s already with no Dumba. If we’re serious about upgrading the center spot this off season.

Vancouver was in a tough spot with Demko because they couldn’t give him a 2-year bridge. RFA Goalie contracts are tricky because they take so much longer to get NHL experience, so you’re pretty much forced into a point where you gamble on a longer-term contract or bridge them and risk losing them in UFA.

I was hoping BG would’ve gone a season longer on Kahkonen so they’d have an extra year of games to make a decision (and the contract length would’ve matched with Talbot). We’ll pretty much be in the same scenario as Vancouver and I think we’ll have to pay him. Hopefully Talbot continues to perform well so he’s got trade value if we need to shed his contract after next season.

I kind of thought the same. Not sure how good he is at face-offs, but he did play a bit of center in college. Hopefully his play in Iowa will get him up sooner than later.

Everything he says is spot on. That's exactly why you pull a guy like Sturm out of the lineup for a game. Having said that, sitting him for a guy like Rau for a 2nd game in a row, makes absolutely zero sense.

Don’t mind it at all, he’s still learning the game and having the extra opportunity to see it from afar, especially the skilled lines, can reap big rewards. Love the way he plays, think there is more offensive potential there though and if he can take some things from watching guys like JEE, Greenway, and the top of the lineup then his game can really take off. Rau doesn’t do much but the difference in game effect right now is minimal, if Sturm can come back motivated and with a better understanding of the game then that gap could grow quite wide.

I mind like hell, when we are playing stiffs like Rask and Bjugstad over him who have no future with this team. Hell, Rau is a nothing player. He is not a NHL player. He does nothing well.

Its not like Sturm is miles better than those guys and has a great future with the team either.

Sturm is miles better than Kyle Rau and does have an NHL future. Rau has zero business skating a shit in the NHL.

All we've heard is it was a late scratch for a lower-body injury, so I can't imagine he's out too long at this point. All conjecture though.
