Nice first move for Kevyn Adams! After a very painful offseason, I’ll take it (as a start).

I’ve been pretty down in the dumps about the Sabres lately. Promoting someone with no front office experience to GM, then Firing half of the hockey ops staff and never replacing them, while talking about budgets and hearing rumors of tight internal budgets/cap doesn’t exactly inspire confidence about the new direction/regime.

This trade is nothing to jump up and down over but it’s a nice start. Staal should at least be a competent 2C for the Sabres. It was a HUGE hole. MoJo is a nice player but he’s not a center. He’s a good left winger - one of the Sabres deeper positions.
Finding a passable #2C is something Botterill couldn’t do in 3 years on the job (after creating the hole himself by trading the best 2C in the NHL for magic beans and crappy expensive vets).

Perhaps you can explain again what you mean because this above makes little sense.

This is a strange deal, Buffalo gets better but Staal is nearly 36 he's going to be around about 3 months then he will be shipped off at the deadline so it not a long term fix

At the deadline when the rumors were swirling about Parise going to the Islanders, it was said that the Wild would be taking back a lot of dead salary like Andrew Ladd’s contract and several other pieces on both sides.

I can’t remember the timing, but I believe when the Parise trade fell through was when the Islanders went after Pageau instead. If I have that right, then that would have freed up $5 mil from Pageau’s extension.

But if Staal can impart 3 month of veteran wisdom and leadership to Mittle and Cozens, isn't that worth more than one year of Marcus?

I think Mitts needs to get out of there, but yes this could be good for Cozens

It wasn’t several other pieces from both sides, it was Parise, Ladd and the Islanders’ 2020 1st.

When you put it like that I would not be surprised at all if Staal just retired. He just might not be up for that in a season that is going to be covidclusterf***ed anyways.

He really should have negotiated a full no trade clause with the sweatheart deals he gave the Wild.

I’ve been on board this (not this specific trade just this premise) the whole time. I mostly expected Stepan tho, not Staal. I actually figured Staal had a full NMC whereas Stepan had no protection at all because it’s his last year. Shit, Adams is smarter than I gave him credit for.

I'll bet if you listened in on a trade call between Lou and Guerin it would be cringe-worthy...Like one between Snow and Chiarelli.

I don't understand this trade one bit. And now I'm honestly wondering whether to go through all the 21 pages of this thread in search of an answer.

I'm starting to think that the animal in the Wild logo is actually a sheared sheep, because they got fleeced.

Guerin thinks Johansson will be a good c for them. For real. His quotes with justification reminds me of Botterill. Funny stuff.

Seems like a very weird move by the Wild. Trade away the better player and cheaper contract.

In today's NHL, Eric Staal isn't old, besides, he is the type of player who can be that what he is now at 40
and beyond, so him to be 36, is not going to be problem, not the slightest.

    Think of 35, 36 the new 30, 31.
