He's not a champion.

I guess it comes down to what is the game of hockey player for? Points collected as an individual or winning championships as a team?
What does a team award have to do with an individual award?

Very happy for him. Can't wait to see him start passing some more names up on that list for most assists. Funny guy, and a great player.

Inconceivable!

The really strange thing to think about is that he was a near-40 goal scorer in the NHL before the trade. The focus of his game seemed to just instantly change.

Would you guys say Thornton is a player who "merely" fulfilled his potential (He was no ordinary prospect ) or did he surpass it?

I would say he surpassed it. He will finish his career with a Hart and Art Ross as well as lots of international accomplishments. He will also be top 10 in assists, top 20 in points, top 10 in adjusted points and top 5 in adjusted assists.

Well he can hardly have surpassed his own potential ;)

But in regards to fulfilling the hype, a really tough question. He was regarded as "the next Lindros" at a time when Lindros was the next Gordie Howe. And at a time when nobody realized that they were seeing the start of the Dead Puck Era.

I'd say expectations for him were unreasonable, and he has done extraordinarily well to rise to them.

watched some media coverage last night, kinda meh, afterthought after all the highlights. If this was one of the media darlings in the East, ie; Toews, Crosby, Kane etc., there would be a ticker-tape parade.

Switch Thornton with Toews in 2010 and the Hawks have at least 3 championships and the Sharks would very likely still have zero...so what does that tell you???

Didn't stop them from putting Dionne or Oates on the list.

I'm just glad that the Pizza My Heartâ„¢ company generously made the Pizza My Heart Trackerâ„¢ available for tracking Joe Thornton's assists, since we wouldn't know about this milestone without this valiant, god-fearing, and very attractive company. Anyone else hungry for a pizza? I know Joe Thornton is!

Congrats JOE. But if leaf fans on HFBoards have taught me anything, it's that empty net goals/points shouldn't count, eventho this one turned out to be the game winner actually.
