Best shape is a tough thing to define. I recall Roenick making a similar mistake in the middle of his career where he spent the summer training with a well-respected football trainer. He came in looking great in terms of muscle mass/definition and yet his skating suffered because of him adding the extra mass without improving his leg strength.
