Who is the current better player. It may seem obvious, but remember Backlund is tasked with extreme shutdown tasks and boosts excellent metrics, and has slightly better 5on5 production. Still because of Johnson's more than significant overall offensive gap, it's valid to conclude Johnson is superior offensively, but I don't think anyone doubts that Backlund is far better defensively, and are their defensive gaps significant enough to make Backlund the superior player?

Johnson while still a solid and good player, feels so irrelevant nowadays. I remember circa 2015 he looked like he usurped Stamkos and was more important and the engine behind the triplets line with Kucherov and Palat.

Now he's just lost in the shuffle that is the TBL depth behind Stamkos, Kucherov and Point.

If we are using the last two years and this year, I'd select Backlund as the better player, but I think they are very close.
