Pegula - C I don't think he meddles as much as people assume but he is also the owner and should be allowed to, for better or worse. He isn't making the players miss tape to tape passes or the coaching staff work up the worst pp in 2 decades and the dude is probably sick of sinking money into GM's and coaches.

Thompson - C love that he is taking the body, hate that he tries to dangle so much, my guy teams are expecting it

Tuch - C - I'm hoping it's the new kid in the house but dude looks sluggish

Skinner- A - Consistent, needs to get off the PP

Cozens - D - wtf happened, almost 40 goals last year and laid the body and fought.

Peterka- A - reason we are not SJ

Quinn- A - missed his creativity

Mitts- A - very well could be C1, defensive game has come along

Benson - B - prob shouldnt be up and he is bodied way too much but dude is the only one bringing energy

Greenway- C great trade, is doing what I hoped for but also wish he was better in front tlof the net for a guy his size

Okposo - C - this has to be it and he is gutting it out

Girgensons- C - love girgs, wish we had 2 more but injuries and scheme have probably made this his last year

Krebs- B - he is doing everything to survive the team abandoning his development and making a skill player play shut down defense

VO - Z - the sun

Jost- F - had a great opportunity and didn't execute like last year

Dahlin - C - what the hell happened

Power- F - hard regression that you could see coming

Samuelsson - D what the hell happened

Joker- C - serviceable but wish he had a little grit in his game

Clifton- C really has come around, enjoy his physicality

Eric Johnson- C - guy was stable at the beginning of the year and it just seems like he thinks he made a mistake and will just go quietly into the night

Ryan Johnson- C - great first half, put him in Rochester, we are only hurting him

Levi- D - put him in Rochester or ride UPL and let him back up

UPL- B - really took over, has calmed a bit after being all over, should be the number 1 and really like his future

Comrie- D - three goalie tandem ruined his time here, think he could be serviceable elsewhere

Donny - C they are playing for you but the org can only protect your assistants for so long

Bales - maybe time for a fresh start

Ellis - overmatched, seems to have the demeanor but not the skillet at the moment.

Christie - meh

Wilford - what happened

Adam Mair - leave

Tim Kennedy - leave

Seamus Kotyk - leave

Is it unreasonable to expect more from a perennial Norris pretender, the next Nik Lidstrom, $11M Golden Boy, 6th year vet than a 21 year-old not yet 2 years removed from playing at UMich?
I do expect more from Dahlin... while not nearly enough he has given far more than 8 mill plus Power

Buffalo Sabres

Record: 17-20-4
Preseason over/under: 94
Current points pace: 76

Class president: Casey Mittelstadt. It's not just that Mittelstadt has surprisingly emerged as Buffalo's leading scorer. It's how he's done it. Mittelstadt isn't just (mostly) racking up assists like he did in last season's breakout campaign. The 25-year-old center is lighting the lamp at a good clip for a team that craves increased firepower. If the versatile Mittelstadt stays consistent, he'll not only continue to be a key cog in Buffalo's often-sputtering offense but he'll surpass a previous career high of 15 goals and set benchmarks to aspire toward through the season half.

In danger of failing: Dylan Cozens. The pressure accompanying a long-term extension can be debilitating. Such was the case for Cozens to start this season. The winger inked a seven-year, $49.7 million deal with Buffalo last February, and the attached expectations seemed to weigh Cozens down out of the gate. He was generating chances without scoring, trying too hard to overcompensate for that lack of production. Cozens appeared to head in a better direction as 2023 came to a close, albeit without results reflecting often enough on the scoresheet. That's the place Cozens admittedly wants to make his presence felt in the second half.

Grade: C- (first-quarter grade: C-). This was supposed to be Buffalo's time to end the 12-year playoff drought and inject new life into the conversation around successful Sabres' hockey. Buffalo has fallen short of those ambitions. The Sabres have talent -- from Rasmus Dahlin to Tage Thompson to Jeff Skinner -- doing its best to perform, but the self-inflicted wounds have killed Buffalo's meager momentum too many times. There's always potential for a second-half surge, of course. Buffalo proved that last season when it fell just shy of a postseason berth. Is that sort of stretch run in the Sabres again?

For me, this is more about the team as a whole and I don't want to get into letter grades.

I am in a pass/fail mode with this team right now and they get a Failing grade from me at the halfway point.

Kevyn Adams bet on the guys in that room. They have failed so far. And Adams has failed to do anything to improve the team in-season.

how can they give them a C- ? its more like a D- or F.
C would mean that they are somewhere near were everyone expected them to be.
But they clearly missed that mark by a lot.
This season is just plain and simply a failure in every category.
From the signed core to the coach to the GM not one bright light shining there.

Centers:

Tage Thompson - F, I thought about giving him a D and rethought it even considering the injury stuff. He's on a 50-point pace and his defense remains suspect. Teams have shut down his PP one-timer (and have for over a season) but it's clear he's trying to push through things. Yet this has been a failure.

Dylan Cozens - F, Similar to Thompson, too much emphasis on trying to score goals, not enough on playing a 200' game. Then there is the lack of awareness factor in the game against Philly where he gets petulant and has his nose blown the hell up by Hathaway. It's unacceptable to be that oblivious of who is on the ice. I would question the work he put in over the summer because he looks unbalanced and top-heavy. Also, the focus the coaching staff has on trying to get him to score instead of playing to win is not good for his game.

Casey Mittelstadt - B+, Hey, someone who has seemingly worked with just about every set of wingers he has worked with regardless of who. He's shown the tenacity of his pre-draft scouting profile, is winning 50-50 pucks and generally backchecking like he means it. He's been a quality catalyst for every set of wingers he's playing with. The downside of course is that it's a contract year.

Peyton Krebs - D+, My expectations weren't great and there are still moments when he does not make the right play. He energetically does nothing significant most of the time. His mistakes tend to be egregious while his good plays tend to be far less noticable.

Tyson Jost - F, Waived after his level of effort present after he was claimed last year flagged. He is one of the few guys on the team who still tried to take himself and the puck to the net, but the rest of his game was particularly milquetoast so it's not a surprise he's in the AHL.

Right Wingers:

Alex Tuch - C-, Slightly below average based on last year's effort and productiveness, though he's still one of the few guys who seem like they've bounced back after mediocre starts. Perhaps the Ray comment about him being all broken and held together with duct tape and twine is true.

JJ Peterka - C-, Has a small stretch of games where he decided to use his speed to attack the middle lane. The rest of the games, I often wonder what he's doing out there, but he's at least doing it fast.

Victor Olofsson - F. Why is he here? Kevyn, you overvalued your boy this summer and he's still around, still not winning much in terms of simple puck battles to the point when it happens it draws multiple comments.

Kyle Okposo - D, The wheels are further off and he appears cooked.

Isak Rosen - INC (leaning D), Not an impressive recall. What he did at the AHL level was never on display in the NHL and in Sabre fashion, he took nearly a month to get back on track once he went back to Rochester.

Lukas Rousek - INC (leaning F), What the hell. So disappointing in his callup time.

Left Wingers:

Jeff Skinner - C. He does things Skinner does - Casual Hockey As Offensive Skinner, aka. CHAOS. There isn't much defense. There is some mild heaters and he seems to straight up own the Habs.

Jack Quinn - INC (leaning B after only 9 games). Recently back from his off-season injury, he looks like the guy who ended last year: able to score in a variety of ways, a possible PK contributor, and constantly on his ass after being knocked down all over the ice.

Jordan Greenway - B, A big part (no pun intended) of the initial improvement on the PK, and generally a solid security blanket for more adventurous offensive players. He does his job - shove people off pucks and make plays to his open linemates, be back defensively to cover for wandering linemates blowing the zone early.

Zach Benson - B+, Has been a pleasant surprise in a season of disappointment. His motor is non-stop. So too is his stick, be it forechecking or backchecking, he's constantly looking for ways to disrupt the opposition. His details are excellent which may be hard for some to see if they don't know what they're looking for.

Zemgus Girgensons - C-, Kinda bog standard Gus though the defensive metrics are a little worse than before.

Eric Robinson - C+, a nice surprise for so little return, though we've seen an effort player with low ceiling previously in Jost who can't continue that. Speed and simple, straightforward play has been beneficial when he's in the lineup.

Brandon Biro - INC (leaning C), one of the rare folks who scored in his recall. He also got hurt and didn't stand out in any other game.

Defensse of the indefensible.

Rasmus Dahlin - F. He's been shit again. The expectations are very high and his casual play has been the cost of more games than just about any other skater. Yeah, he's nursing some LBI thing and it shows in just how slow he's skating. The explosiveness is gone out of his speed and while his shooting has improved, his decision making has been regularly questionable. Regularly caught out of position, part of their rash of odd-man rushes and breakaways given up. This is an expectation grade in the same way it is for Thompson and Cozens.

Owen Power - D- , The lack of physical engagement and the lack of growth in his game in his own zone continues to undercut his ability to move the puck crisply and well in transition. There are basic concepts of his position that he just does not exhibit and that's troublesome for either the multi-headed blueline coaching of Wolford/Girardi/Redmond hasn't gotten through to him or is just shit at their jobs (some from column A, some from column B). A puck and play watcher par excellence now, the off-shoulder scan he used to exhibit has given way to a lot of defensive coverage tunnel vision.

Mattias Samuelsson - D, He hasn't been consistent, though the dinged up injury thing has hit him again as he is one of their few guys who will block a shot or finish a hit. He's still had a plays where there is a lack of engagement and he's another of their guys who will start staring at the puck and not notice who is behind him. Missing is some of the seamlessness of he and Dahlin playing off one another to know who should be on which side that they had last year. Some of that is on Dahlin's rodeo clown aggressiveness and some of it is on Samuelsson.

Henri Jokiharju - C, Henri's had a lot more good than bad when he's playing down the lineup. And yet he also has the moments like in the last game where two stupid decisions lead directly to goals against. His processing to get a shot off may be transmitted via smoke signals rather than neurotransmitters. He has had a lot of bad luck - pucks off skates, pucks off officials, etc... He also tends to get completely fixated on the puck so backdoor plays are a constant threat with him defending. Ironically, I also messed up the copy and paste of his thing three times, so maybe it's just him.

Connor Clifton - C-, the last month has been a lot better since he called himself out in the press. Prior to that was either too aggressive, leaving his partner exposed or too timid, leaving him exposed. He should never play his offhand (left) side, as was done early with him and EJ as a pair. It just doesn't work.

Erik Johnson - C-, some of the improvement early on the PK was for him. And he's taken over the Montour reins as the guy pucks are going to go in off him the most. Also someone who shouldn't ever play the left side as he's terrible there. Given his TOI is under 11 minutes a game, he's a PK specialist and their PK has been better since he joined the unit... average.

Jacob Bryson - INC, In just three games, not a surprise that he's not on the squad any longer.

Ryan Johnson - B+, Impressed that he arrived earlier than I expected and most of the time he looks pretty smooth in how he transitions and positions himself. There are still some youthful gaffs and he's the only guy who seems to get gaffed by the staff when it happens. He's played both sides and hasn't seemed to struggle with either.

(One upside is that they have been reasonably healthy on the blueline so Bryson has only played 3 games and none of the other suspects from Rochester in Clague or Stillman have had to come up... yet.)

Goaltending:

Devon Levi: C-, given his age and such, it's probably unfair to give him a D grade. But the rebound control is still bad. There tends to be a bad goal nearly every other start and a bad start about every three. The fixation on him as the future from above reminds me of Botterill's obsessing over keeping Mitts and Tage around in the Housley era rather than having them put in the work on the farm where there is more practice time available.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: B-, He's been better than I've expected this year albeit still inconsistent.

Eric Comrie: D, shattered.

Coaching:

F-. The Powerplay is now over a year since it was productive. Their only play is trying to set up Thompson for a one-timer in the LW circle. PP 2 has one play - set up Vic in the right circle. They haven't adapted, haven't tried different personnel in a meaningful way outside of replacing Thompson's shot option with Cozens as the shot option when Tage was hurt. They have tried nothing and are all out of ideas. It's terrible.

The ES implementation of some sort of defensive framework failed. The players don't seem to make winning plays and all the corrective action is from above is a call to "work harder". It seems Granato's runway as the development guy has expired. And his staff is doing nothing. The defense have all taken steps back in their overall play. The forwards make the same midget level mistakes over and over again. What do they do?

Mike Bales, what do you do? Jason Christie? Why are you here? Matt Ellis? All y'all should not be working in the NHL, it is clearly too much for you.

General Manager:

F. Adams did make a minor tinker move with picking up Robinson which helped a bit in terms of engagement from the energy line. Pushing guys like Bryson and Stillman (and Clague and whoever the new Fitz analog would be) off the roster with depth moves is something that should be bog standard. However... the three goalie situaiton and the inconsistency of all of his netminders is on him. Vic still being on the roster is on him. Not finding mid-liners to plug into the lineup who can push the play toward winning battles and accountability is on him. There are only so many roster spots, they continue to have too many prospects and not enough players who can or will impose at the NHL level in a way that can win in their division.

Also hearing that they have a grand total of one pro scout and that pro scout is also the head of his own department is seriously troubling. Liptsitcking this pig is about it. We don't need to hear that they called about someone who was traded to another team by yet another team. DO SOMETHING. They've more than squandered the goodwill they took two years to rebuild with this season. The right thing to do would've been to sack the HC after the Columbus debacle but here we are.
As someone who excelled academically by graduating in the top 5/6 of his class, I can respect these grades.

Thompson - C- I've liked his game a lot more since his injury seems to be healing. I can accept the other gaffes when he's producing.

Tuch - C - When he's on, I love his game. He still has that skill-set that this team is lacking, but for whatever reason (duct tape injuries?) he doesn't seem as engaged as the previous years.

Skinner- B - His production has been solid and his known Defense-Avoidance-Syndrome has been on full-display, but again, a supremely talented goal-scorer who is scoring goals.

Cozens - F - Relative to my expectations, he's been horrid. I don't know what's cooking in his head, but this season has been a disaster for him. Is he trying to take on too much at this point in his development? He just looks lost.

Peterka- B - Early production was very good, but he seems to go into disinterested lulls where he neutralizes his own speed. Hopefully he finds his consistency because he's a really good player.

Quinn- A - He's been great. A true catalyst for that 2nd line and provided a legitimate boost to the entire team upon his return.

Mitts- A - My favorite story of the year. I'm hoping this isn't a contract-year demonstration and then he settles back to his previous play after securing the cash, but he's been everything we hoped he'd be when he was drafted.

Benson - B+- Probably the only guy that brings consistent energy, effort, and dogedness every single night. You can see he's a very skilled hockey player and hopefully they don't stunt his development by rushing him but he seems so far that he can handle it.

Greenway- B- A guy with size who occasionally uses his size? Outstanding. Production-wise, I'm not thrilled, but he never looks out of place and his playing-style generally fits with anyone else.

Okposo - C - I leaned D here but he had that nice goal-scoring streak. This grade is really no fault of his own. He's playing hard and being a good captain, he just lost most of his abilities with age.

Girgensons- C - I feel like this has been his grade since 2016. Great effort and motor, but that's just kind of it. I really wish they could've gotten a play-off team together for him.

Krebs- C - Relative to my expectations, I think this is fair. He definitely hasn't been given the offensive opportunities that I think he would run with, and seems to embrace the checking role he's been given. I was hoping he'd be more of a play-driver but he's just sort of there.

Olofsson - D - He scores a few goals, goes on a nice run and then rides off into the sunset. This should be it for him.

Jost- F - He was a body. Disappointing given what a spark he was last year once he was claimed.

Dahlin - D - Again, this is relative to my expectations. Compared to other defensemen in the league, he's still one of the best. His production has been fine, which is where the D comes from. However, his decision-making and general with-it-ness has been atrocious, specifically of late.

Power- D - Another player where his production brought him out of failing. How can you be as large as he is and as allergic to physical contact as he is? Flubs and generally bad choices are a plague to his season, though I hope he rebounds as part of the process.

Samuelsson - D- He'll make a Cobra play here and there and be physical here and there which are things this team desperately needs. He seems to have gone to hand-grenade school in the off-season as he serves up some beauties.

Joki- B - I think he's been their most consistent defenseman this year not named Ryan Johnson. Not saying he's been spectacular or anything, but to my eyes, there haven't been as many obvious moments of great anger that he's been the sole cause of.

Clifton- C- I loved how he was hard on himself and then did something about it. Big character guy who will hit anything. Aside from that, he's just sort of there.

Eric Johnson- C - I absolutely love his willingness to block shots and do the dirty things. You can tell he's 35 on most nights, but if some of the younger guys would do what he's doing, they might be better-off.

Ryan Johnson- A - Again, this just relative to my expectations. I always hope these young guys will play well when they come up, but considering everything that's been going on with this team, I think he's been my favorite prospect-related story of the year.

Levi- D - Who could have ever predicted that a young NCAA goalie might need some development time in the AHL? I appreciate KA's commitment to the young players, but he is not ready.

UPL- B - He looks much more confident and solid this year. He should be getting the majority of the starts from here on-out but this ridiculous carousel will probably hinder his getting into a groove.

Comrie- F - I hope he plays awesome somewhere else, but when you're the odd-man out in this three-headed debacle, that says something.

Granato - D- He hasn't lost the players and that's terrific, but he seems reticent and slow to react. Not ideal traits for the HC.

The professor in me cannot love this post enough. God. The number of times I have to say this per semester is maddening.
We would hunt through the professor lists, compare notes, and dodge any professor that graded like that.

But grading this team isn’t taking an elective. F’s for everyone, B for Dahlin (he’s f***ing leading all defenseman in goals, top 10 in points), A for Mitts and Benson, B for RJo, C for the goalies.

It’s not that bad but really Im pointing at Tage and Cozens, the PP, and Sammy. Those are the actual F’s everyone else is a C/B.

Player grades don’t matter to me. The failures of this season fall on management and coaching.

Granato—F minus starting the season trying to install a system after setting playoff expectations was bound to fail and frankly dumb. His lack of ability to find players accountable for their lackluster efforts and boneheaded plays has been prominently on display. Also lackluster is his staff who cant design an NHL level power play nor show an ability to fix the penalty kill after it started to falter

Adams—F minus minus— easily could have dramatically improved this team in the offseason. Grabbing some Calgary players at the start or actually participating in free agency. But the guy is toothless and should be fired. But he cares so he stays…f*** that

Good to see that Ryan Johnson is performing reasonably well. Ideally, he'll end up being a solid, great skating 2nd pairing guy, though the fact that he shoots L is a bummer, for your roster.

I understand the reluctance to fire Granato after giving him a new contract, but that seems to be the path of least resistance. Whatever his message is simply isn't working. Berube would be a great change of pace. Tough, who expects work, but not a psycho. Has won a Cup. Hard to see how he wouldn't be just the guy to change things up, or at least be fresh eyes that will evaluate players from a real world, grown up POV. I would guess that he would want Adams to move out a couple of players, and move in a couple of lunchbucket, veteran players like Sundqvist, Foligno, Lomberg.

Whatever is wrong with the Sabres will not be fixed with one trade, IMO. It's a mindset change...Granato gave that to them for a while, as the kind, positive, understanding Dad, but it's time to bring in a guy with REAL credentials, and a more demanding message.

Funny thing is, he's been good on his off-hand side. There isn't really any fall off in how he defends, how he moves the puck, or anything. If he was a rightie, it would be ideal, but he's been playing a lot on the right regardless right from his assignment to the Amerks to his recall. And it hasn't seemed to tip him in the wrong direction at all, even moving him from side to side from shift to shift.

They could shuffle up their bottom six by moving out Olofsson (a move that should've been done over the summer), Okposo (who is done) and bringing in vets who play a no-nonsense game and not really change much of the makeup of the team. Funny, but Duhaime would be a guy I would really like in Buffalo in that role. Same with bringing back William Carrier who I know will be a top add for some team in UFA this summer but now has the style of game AND the Cup winning experience they need in their bottom 6.

But they really need a change behind the bench. Look what it's done for Edmonton. And Vancouver. And Winnipeg. And even your own Wild.
