Crazy stuff going on in the Vancouver area.

And now this:
HAPPENING NOW: #RCMP responding to incident on/near south end of #Burnaby #BCIT campus. No evacuations yet; no word on nature of incident

There is also a power outage in Burnaby right now, perfect timing.

This Just in; (Apr 19th, 1:00pm)
ALL CLEAR from RCMP RT @BurnabyRCMP @BurnabyRCMP The @MetropolisatMet suspicious package has been determined not to be a risk - all safe.

And finally
RT @bcit: Burnaby RCMP have now concluded their investigation and activity on the BCIT Burnaby Campus without incident.

Still scary with all the tragedies going on across the states right now though. Thank god everyone here is safe and nothing happened today in Burnaby.

Burnaby RCMP are reporting the suspicious package found in the food court at Metropolis at Metrotown that forced an evacuation of that portion of the mall has been determined 'not to be a risk' and has begun allowing people back into the mall.

This was tweeted by the Burnaby RCMP (@burnabyRCMP) account shortly before 1 p.m.

Just before noon, police evacuated customers in a portion of the Burnaby mall after receiving a report of a suspicious package, Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt.-Major John Buis told the NewsLeader.

"In this heightened state of awareness we're taking every precaution," Buis said at the time.

Specialized teams were called in to investigate.

Earlier, Reena B. on Twitter said the two floors near the food court had been evacuated by police.

A photo posted by Jay (@omg_yay) shows police escorting customers out.

Doesn't seem like a big deal, and I hope it really isn't. Haven't heard anything from my folks back in Burnaby either.

Twitter - because old fashioned gossip and fear-mongering just aren't good enough anymore.

You know what, I don't blame anyone for being a bit jumpy with this sort of stuff. Never can be too careful. Some of you need to have a bit more respect.

All this reminds me of an old Twilight Zone episode:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734664/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

"The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street".

The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children, and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.
