Metro Division is ridiculous

With how great this team was, I think all of us were willing to give them a pass for even the couple of losses to bad teams on the west coast trip. But the fact is the Isles are 3-4-1, since the end of the point streak. And furthermore, they have looked good in maybe two of those games (Columbus and Vegas). Plus, the other teams in our division NEVER lose. That is now cause for concern. We have the misfortune of playing in quite possibly the strongest division in all of sports. Dont look now but just about every team has caught up to us. It is insane to think that a team that won 15 games during a 17 game point streak is right now 3, yes THREE points clear of 5th place in the division. Not the league, not the conference, the DIVISION.
So, yes there is nothing we can do about how strong our division is, but these guys have got to get back to the way they were playing in early November because any kind of even short losing streak and we could find ourselves in the 8th spot fighting for the playoffs. It is scary, but there is a legit chance you could need 95-100 points just to make the playoffs in our division.
I really hope Lou is finally looking to do something because there is no way this team can compete in this division with Ross Johnston as a top 6 winger long term. We desperately need a real top line winger.

Hyperbole much. Every other team below us has played more games. The Islanders also looked good in the game against San Jose.

But do you disagree with the main point of the post? That the Isles play in quite possibly the strongest division in pro sports right now, so the standard they have to keep up is unfortunately much higher than it would be for most other teams. And those games on hand you are referring to are dwindling. It used to be 3-5 games with every team, now it is down to 1-2 with most teams and in that time we have fallen farther back from Washington and everyone behind has gained on us.

5 of the top 10 teams in the league are in the Metro. That means the other 3 divisions COMBINED have 5 in the top 10. That is a pretty significant disparity.

I don't know, right now they're the toughest division in the league but who cares? I'd rather have our good team make the playoffs as a top team in the toughest division than squeak in because their division is dog shit.

Washington has played four more games, Philadelphia has played three more, Pittsburgh and Carolina have played two more. The record the last ten games is right around the other teams near us, so it's simply games played that's making the difference. Teams ebb and flow, as a I say all the time. Philadelphia was horrific for a stretch, now they're hot. The Rangers aren't good and are riding a hot streak. Carolina started hot and has been mediocre since, and Pittsburgh is battling injuries like crazy. You're overly wrapped up in the negative for no reason. Our team that is playing poorly at the moment is still fourth in the entire NHL.

This is why the entire thought process of these divisions suck. Florida and Buffalo would play each other in round one because the Atlantic division sucks.
Playoffs should not be seeded by division. It should be division winners, and then next 6 top teams. If 6 or 7 teams from the Metro make the playoffs, so be it.

Your post is not entirely accurate. In the last 10 games, only Columbus and the Devils have less points than us. Washington has 6 more points than us over that span, Philadelphia 4 more, that is not around the same amount.

I'd be fine with that.

It's completely accurate. I said, "it's right around the other teams near us," which doesn't mean we have more or the same, it means we're right next to them. You're cherry picking Washington to make it look worse.

After last night the Isles are 5-4-1 in their last 10, good for 11 points.
Philadelphia is 7-2-1, for 15 points.
Pittsburgh is 6-2-2, for 14 points.
Carolina is 6-4, for 12 points.
Rangers are 6-3-1, for 13 points.

So we've lost a few points, but they've also played more games. Looking at wins, only Philadelphia is ahead by more than one. Before last night's loss we were 6-3-1, so we're right there with every team but Washington. If we won our games in hand we'd only be three points behind Washington too.

But...but...we're not guaranteed to win those games at hand.

Well, considering those games in hand are all road games, at least where the Capitals are concerned, and they are struggling on the road a little, I wouldn't count on all those games in hand points.

The 6th place team in the Metro might end up with more points than the 2nd place team in the Atlantic and not make the playoffs. The 5th place team in the Metro would be running away with 2nd in the Atlantic.

Yet all summer we heard about how dominant the Atlantic was going to be and how mediocre the Metro was going to be.

Yet another example of HF main boards not having a clue.

And that does not even account for the easier schedule those teams have by playing the divisional teams more. It was bogus when it was brought back, the 1-8 seeding system worked much better.

Totally agree with Satan'slsland81 and YearlyLottery, they should go back to the 1-8 seeding. The league is identified by it's tournament and having weaker teams having an advantage by being in, and playing in a crappy division ins't fair. Look at the last two seasons and it should give you an idea of what a joke the NHL higher ups are: two years ago, an expansion team made it to the finals:thumbd: and last year, the Blues were the WORST team on January 3rd:huh:.

SOUND THE ALARM! WE PLAY IN THE TOUGHEST DIVISION IN THE LEAGUE!

(pay no attention that we're in 2nd in that division, with games in hand on literally everyone, and have gone 5-2-1 in said division so far)

WE'RE DOOMED!
