I think the Raiders are the favorites to win this year and yes, Storm are the underdogs.
However... i have a feeling that the Storm are gonna win this year.

In their way to the OHL championship, Storm had to defeat 2 OHL/CHL powerhouses; London&Ottawa.
They were down 3-0 against Knights, but won 4 in a row, 2-zip down against 67's, won 4 in a row.

Now the other 3 might have more depth and better players but Storm top 6: (2 D-men, 4 F)
Suzuki,Durzi,Ratcliffe,Samorukov,Toropchenko,Schnarr can give any teams/fans their moneys worth of hockey

It's also the only games the 67s lost. They went 14-0 before that.

Agree with rb re: name. The 20 year (at least) association with M’Card was long overdue for a change. I guess calling it Memorial Cup only is the difference between a title sponsor and a presenting sponsor. Fewer $$ for the CHL possibly?

Watched the game last night and PA reminded me of Ottawa - small fast forwards who struggled against the size of Halifax. Very interested to see how Guelph fairs today.
Prince Albert has a bigger team than Halifax on average

I see that now - they sure played "small" last night.

After watching last night's opening game of the tournament, Noticed some key things that the Halifax Mooseheads had going their way over Prince Albert Raiders.

One was definitely was size the Mooseheads dominated the Raiders with bigger players and forced PA to play the Mooseheds game. The Prince Albert Raiders were smaller and scrappier than Halifax no doubt but had no answer for the size of the Mooseheads.

Once Halifax opened the game up on PA they pulled away fairly handily on the scoreboard.

Moving into today's game with the Storm starting their tournament against the Huskies will get a chance to see if the Storm can change their modo of being "The Comeback Kids" to being "The Kids".

The Storm have size and loads of skill up front and will need to utilize that early on in today's game to get a step ahead in the tournament early.

This should be a good test early on for GB and his Storm to be an early measuring stick in the tournament.

Again...Prince Albert actually has the bigger team. Only 5 players under 6 foot on the PA roster. Halifax has 13

I can't speak for every season but I know the CHL kind of insisted the media call it "the Mastercard Memorial Cup" while in Windsor. It was odd but understandable.

...... and in my opinion, annoying and disrespectful.

The CHL insisted because the sponcer insisted. Money talks or rather, talked. Breath of fresh air with MasterCard not involved.

thank you Kia..no more cheapening the title.Mastercard shmamford card!!!!

When it comes down to it fans can look at the Memorial Cup in several different ways, Who gets the fair schedule? Who should host?

Personally Who really cares what Company sponsors the tournament, respect the and honor those who paid for our freedoms by wearing a poppy if you attend the tournament, wear your team logo with pride and enjoy a great week of the continents best junior hockey teams in Canada and U.S. respectively.

As fans we should all respect the sacrifices our military services paid and take the chance to meet fellow CHL fans from across all the CHL.

I'm wondering if they are having issues with the ice, seems like a lot of players falling down/stumbling for no apparent reason? Nothing from the announcers yet but it sure looks like there is an issue.

For the two games I've attended so far, it seems like the ice resurfacers have left little water behind except at the exit doors. The regular shoveling crew is collecting more snow than I'm used to seeing in U.S. rinks, but that could be due to the more thorough job here. I've been looking for evidence of excessive puck roll & slow passes & puck hop, but nothing I've seen indicates sub-standard ice conditions so far. Outside temps have been chilly with regular rain. The Scotiabank Centre crew is managing the ice surface quite well. IMO.

Must be my lucky night: Usher at arena gave me & my wife his two seats in the lower bowl, Section 9, 10 rows up from the ice. I'll definitely watch the ice conditions tonight. :wg:

The WHL champion has now lost 12 straight games

Do the top W teams not load up at the deadline to the same extent as the top OHL/Q teams?

I know in recent years their region loses significantly more talent to the NCAA than eastern Canada but I dont have enough proof to assume that to be a significant enough contributor as of yet.

Prince Albert was pretty loaded this season and was on top of the CHL rankings all season.

Something weird going on with the WHL champions lately. Four straight Memorial Cups they have gone 0-3.

But does the WHL see the same degree of loading up at the trade deadline than the O does? Serious question, how frequently do you see Suzuki + Durzi, Brassard + Studnicka, and McLeod + Tippett trades out there?

No it does not. Prince Albert traded for 3 players around the deadline - a top 6 forward, a depth dman, and a back up goalie. They were loaded coming in to the season though and dominated the league.

Rouyn-Noranda and Halifax made more moves than PA did, but still not nearly to the extent that Guelph did. I'm not sure if the WHL has just been weak lately and is more prone to top teams dominating easily in their league then struggling against the Eastern leagues, or if this is just a weird coincidence of WHL champs choking.

After watching the games involving Prince Albert (WHL's best team), you have to wonder just how bad Swift Current (WHL's worst team) must have been! At least the thought crossed my mind...

Ontario’s game is the most complete. Mix of speed, skills and grit throughout the whole team. Quebec’s game is a lot of speed and Top 6-7 kids have skills. They have been identified as the worst league for a long time. Reality is that the WHL is now the league falling behind. They need to start from the bottom up and work on speed and skills.
