If Arizona has Kotkaniemi rated 5th or later, then just letting Montreal take him moves the Coyotes up one slot for free. That’s a good bargain. At that point it’s also a 50/50 proposition that we get our 3rd ranked guy. Best case scenario is we get #3 for free. Worst case is we get #4 for free. Assuming Montreal takes Kotkaniemi and we have him ranked 5th or later. Great time to stay put if you’re Arizona.

Unless they feel their #3 guy is better by a significant margin. Then it's worth trading up to get the considerably better player.

I think Bouchard is tailor made for our system.
A system built on speed. Now downgraded in that area with Galchenyuk instead of Domi, looking for full time Strome next year, and Bouchard not exactly known for his skating. Seems to be some contradictions happening. The team is getting slower and Bouchard over Dobson would further that.

Tocchet has always said he doesn’t mean skating speed. He means quick decisions and quick puck movement.

The main reason our defense struggled so mightily to adapt for the first half of the season is precisely because the Coyotes don’t want them skating with the puck. It took folks a while to learn how to move the puck quickly without being stupid about it. Goligoski caught on the quickest. Demers took a long time but finally got it.

Bouchard is an amazing passer. His stretch passes are a thing of beauty and his little give and goes and east west passes in the ozone are his best weapon offensively.

Bouchard is a better fit for how the Coyotes are trying to have their defenseman play than the much better skating D like Hughes and especially Boqvist.

Just pick him with the 3rd overall.

Hampus Lindholm was ranked around 15 or so but we picked him up at 6th and so far so good.

Why gamble?

It works both ways. There's no sense in giving up more, if the worst that happens is you force Montreal into picking a player you wouldn't actually consider at 5th.

Let's say the Coyotes draft list looks like this:
1. Dahlin
2. Svechnikov
3. Tkachuk
4. Zadina
5. Dobson

Why would they give up pick 55 to move up? If they don't have Kotkaniemi in their top six, it guarantees they'll get at least their 4th ranked player.

If we don't have Kotkaniemi in our top five, we aren't moving up two spots, we're moving up just one spot. It would be the difference between our 4th ranked guy and our 3rd ranked guy.
