After being the best ES scorer for three straight seasons from 16/17 to 18/19 while scoring at almost a 1.00 ES point per game rate (0.97) vs. 0.83 ESP/game for Kucherov and 0.82 ESP/game for Kane , McDavid has seemed to switch to being a PP force while losing his ES dominance.

Since the start of the 19/20 season, he has scored at a 0.69 PP point/game pace vs. 0.61 PPP/game for Draisaitl, 0.51 for Pastrnak, and 0.45 for MacKinnon. He is 4th in in ES points/game (0.86) vs. Panarin 0.99 ESP/game, Kane 0.91, Draisaitl 0.89

From 16/17 to 18/19, he was 1st in ES TOI among forwards and 31st in PP TOI. Since then then he is 5th in ES TOI and 3rd in PP TOI.

He’s still at .86 es ppg in that time frame, just with more pp points as well. I wouldn’t say he’s become a pp specialist just because he’s getting better on the power play and staying one of the best at ES.

Man what a scrub.

I will generously offer Brendan Lemieux for him. And the only reason why I'm being so generous is because I respect the Oilers as a franchise.
Brendan Lemieux, every prospect the NYR have that has not played in the NHL yet and 4 first round picks and you have a deal!

His line on the even strength is what it is. The coach is trying to compensate him

I remember people trying to use this to discredit Kucherov's 128 point season, and I never understood it.

Power play points are points. They count on the scoreboard all the same.
I remember people making arguments based more that Kuch's numbers were skewed piling up "secondary assists" as people put it, playing with high efficiency finishing team mates (or stacked team) rather than it being simply PP induced. But I'm sure that argument was made at some point as well on these boards. Either way that was a special season and I don't think anyone expects Kucherov to sniff those numbers again in his career.

If secondary assists was the argument, it was also a poor one.

Kucherov's secondary assist percentage of total points that season was 26.56%.

For reference:

This year:
McDavid: 22.5%
Draisaitl: 27.27%

Last year:
McDavid: 25.51%
Draisaitl: 25.45%

Regardless, I'm still of the opinion that points are points and this doesn't detract from any of these players' greatness.

It doesnt help that the pp has gotten so hot that him and Drai spend the whole 2 minutes out there a lot of the time. Physically and psychologically that gears them to invest in the PP

Watching McDavid and Draisaitl out there for 10 minutes of PP time against the Jets was butt clenching. That game was a nightmare to watch.

Such a one trick pony. He should traded immidiatly to the leafs for Kerfoot and 3rd........ maybe 2nd if he can produce 50 points per year

You answered your own question in the OP. He's playing more on the PP, hence, more PP scoring and a more even split between his ES and PP scoring.

How many of those power play opportunities is he generating though ? How many times was he hooked/slashed/interfered on, or a team mate was, on a play that would've ended up as a goal ? Watching him play he's only gotten better and faster. I think he's drawing more penalties, or his team is drawing more penalties and he plays a big part in that with his speed. He seems get the Oilers a PP just with his foot speed alone almost every game.

Not so much his ES has weakened, but I think he's generating more PP opportunities. It's more than just a numbers game. I wouldn't worry lol.

Is he in his grace period though daver?

The people need to know.

A couple bad games against a good Leafs team doesn’t change that.

This 100x. I came in to ask for a “grace period” when I saw who the OP was. I can’t believe it was page 2 before someone said this.

I guess Crosby was a PP specialist all this time and no one realized it!:sarcasm:

PP Specialist is someone who normally could be a 4th line or third pairing guy, who is exception in certain situations offensively

James Neal, Quinn Hughes are two that come to mind

Neal- Elite at picking holes in tight, hughes has great vision and passing but sometimes 5on5 gets dominated
