The good, bad and ugly of Game 4
Beware: It's going to be a busy day for those among us who find satisfaction in harping on harbingers.

You probably knew that. But an extra warning never hurts in matters such as trying to maintain your sanity in a world of piping-hot sports takes.

Oh, the of-course-I'm-worried-aren't-you? caterwauling will be in full eardrum-puncturing effect in the immediate aftermath of the Bruins' 4-3 overtime loss to the Rangers Thursday night.

Providence helped turn Bartkowski, Krug into key players for Bruins
A number of factors have contributed to the Bruins' somewhat surprising 3-1 series lead on the Rangers, and one of them is certainly the play of young defensemen Matt Bartkowski and Torey Krug.

Forced into action by injuries, the two were scooped up from the Triple-A Providence Bruins and thrust into playing big minutes, which have yielded even bigger results. Bartkowski, averaging about 20 minutes a night, scored a goal in the Game 7 win over the Leafs and has added an assist against the Blue Shirts for two points in six games, while the lesser-known Krug, with a rapidly growing legend, is a point-per-game player with three goals and an assist, as he’s averaged roughly 16 minutes in his four contests. It would seem the only thing standing in their way is the health of Dennis Seidenberg and Andrew Ference.

Tuukka Rask, Bruins try to shake off a tough night in New York
The play everyone will be talking about came when Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask payed homage to Jets QB Marc Sanchez and his Thanksgiving butt fumble in the second period. Rask lost his balance setting up for a Carl Hagelin shot, fell to the ice, and watched helplessly as the puck slithered over the goal line to get the Rangers on the board in the second period, cutting the Bruins lead to 2-1.

“I just took a step to the side in what I think there was probably a skate mark or something,’’ said Rask. “My skate dug in it, that’s what it felt like, and then I lost my balance and the rest is history. It happens to me twice a year in practice, maybe. Focus, got to be more focused, I think, but just a tough mistake. It looks pretty bad on TV, I bet.’’

The four crucial mistakes that doomed the Bruins in Game 4
The Bruins were unable to sweep the Rangers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Thursday night in New York's Madison Square Garden and must now try to win the series back in Boston on Saturday. The team said mistakes caused the loss, like Tuukka Rask's tumble and Zdeno Chara's undoing behind the Boston net.
Take a look at the four biggest mistakes the Bruins made that prevented them from sweeping the series.

Bruins remove their thinking caps
“ ‘Sloppy’ is the word I used,’’ said Boston coach Claude Julien, who watched his club blow leads of 2-0 and 3-2, and wind up 4-3 losers on a night when the Rangers never held a lead until Chris Kreider’s winner. “We weren’t as crisp as we were in past games.

Tyler Seguin takes the credit and the blame
At 8:06 of the third period, Tyler Seguin finally scored his first goal of the playoffs. Less than two minutes later, Seguin was in the penalty box when the Rangers scored the game-tying goal.

Bruins give away Game 4
With a chance to complete the sweep of the Rangers, the B’s took a two-goal lead but fumbled it away and wound up losing, 4-3, in overtime on Chris Kreider’s game-winner at Madison Square Garden.

The Bruins lost the 2-0 advantage on terrible goals. If that wasn’t bad enough, Tyler Seguin had given them the lead back on his first goal of the playoffs — and just seconds from being the B’s third power-play tally of the night — but they quickly took a penalty for too many men on the ice and Brian Boyle tied it with 10:00 left in regulation.

Tuukka Rask now the fall guy
NEW YORK — Unlike some gentlemen who share his line of work, goalie Tuukka Rask has never been one to make excuses, or rationalize, or otherwise try to duck blame that comes his way.
When he does something bad, he is his own most withering critic.

“It was just awful,†said Rask of his goaltending error-for-the-ages last night that sparked new life in the New York Rangers, who went on to a 4-3 overtime victory, averting a series sweep and forcing a Game 5 tomorrow back in Boston.

Give and take for Tyler Seguin
NEW YORK — Tyler Seguin finally scored a playoff goal last night, but he didn’t have long to celebrate it.

At the time, Seguin scored what appeared to be a huge go-ahead goal for the Bruins instants after a power play at 8:06 of the third period, for a 3-2 lead.

Less than a minute later, he was involved in a sloppy change that led to a penalty for too many men on the ice. Soon after came Brian Boyle’s game-tying goal at 10:00 of the third period

Bruins bad in big way
NEW YORK — The only way the Rangers were going to avoid being swept last night was if the Bruins fell down on the job.

And did they ever — literally, figuratively, every way.

What was your lowlight from last night? Was it Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask tripping on the ice as a dribbler slid Buckner-esque by him and into the net? Was it Zdeno Chara allowing the Rangers’ Derek Stepan to sneak up behind him, take the puck and score a wraparound goal off a shocked, asleep-at-the-switch Rask? Was it a too-many-men call in the third period that set up the Rangers’ third goal?

Breaks go Rangers’ way
NEW YORK — For all of the talk about playing with a heightened level of desperation with their backs against the wall, the New York Rangers were fairly sluggish early in last night’s 4-3 overtime win over the Bruins in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

It took the Rangers more than six minutes to put a shot on net and they trailed 2-0 midway through the second period. And then the Rangers finally got the game-changing break they believe had eluded them in the first three games of the series.

No sweeping success for Bruins
NEW YORK — Chris Kreider proudly wore the Broadway Hat in the victorious New York Rangers dressing room as he tried to describe the feeling of saving his team’s season.

Kreider deftly steered in a pass from Rick Nash 7:03 into overtime, and the Rangers stayed alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night.

Linesman to Tortorella: 'That's enough! F--- you!'
NBC microphones captured part of a what appeared to be a heated exchange between the New York Rangers coach and a linesman during Thursday’s broadcast of Game 4 against the Boston Bruins.

“That’s enough! F--- you! ... You had your say,†the linesman, who is not seen on camera, is heard yelling at Tortorella.

Bruins can't close out series as Rangers earn OT win
“It looked tough there for a while, but that ugly goal changed the whole game and that’s sometimes what you need,†said Lundqvist after the Rangers’ got an overtime goal from Chris Kreider for a 4-3 win to avoid the series sweep at Madison Square Garden. “You need to feel the puck finally bounced our way. That’s what I’ve been talking about for three days, I think. They’re getting a lot of good bounces from deflections and screens and suddenly it happened for us and it felt like we gained a lot of energy and confidence. The game changed, it really did.â€

KREIDER KEEPS RANGERS ALIVE
"It is so surreal," the 22-year-old Kreider said. "It's not something that can really be explained. It is something that just has to be felt, but it was awesome. I'm just excited to give these guys an opportunity to play another game.

"There is no quit in this room."
