Aqueduct (New York):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won three consecutive starts amid eight total rides.
  • Manny Franco won three times on seven mounts.
  • John Velazquez-Todd Pletcher, mentioned yesterday for their subpar numbers this meet, combined to win the finale.
  • Dylan Davis had no wins on six mounts but hit the board four times with 11-1-, 20-1, 20-1 and 26-1 shots.
  • Jason Servis, who was DQ'd as the winning trainer in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, had two entries today and both were victorious.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr/Jason Servis/Mike Napoli combined to win two consecutive races. Napoli is the former pro baseball player who is a tremendous 127 49-20-19 (38.5%) in his first year as a T-bred owner.
  • Conditions: Racing was off the turf.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Conditions: The track was muddy but the sun shined as the afternoon progressed. This time of the year, Laurel does not conduct turf racing.
  • Sheldon Russell and Alex Cintron both have 33 wins which tops the jockey standings.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Rainbow Six: Paid each winner about $4,700. The pot didn't get the $7 million figure that some estimated. My figure of $5 million was closer to being accurate. Over $3.6 million was added today.
  • Conditions: Racing was off the turf.
  • Richard Mitchell, who snapped a 98-race (unofficial) losing streak on November 20 won again today. He has three wins with 159 starters this year but two victories on his last three mounts.
  • Closing Day: This appears to be the second-to-last year of racing for the former Calder.
  • Paco Lopez, jockey, and Saffie Joseph, trainer, won their respective titles.
Paco-and-Saffie-credit-Ryan-Thompson-new.jpg
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Corey Lanerie (28 wins) and Tyler Gaffalione (22 wins), the two winningest riders at the meet, each won twice.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Juan Hernandez rode three winners. His last two days, he was 13 8-3-0. He has had multiple winners on six straight cards and has won 18 of his past 35 rides in that time. UPDATE: He was named Jockey of the Week in North America.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 6: It's Tiz Time (Diego Sanchez/Ron McAnally) rocked the oval at 74-to-1. The winner paid $150.20/$40.80/$17.40. The $.50 tri paid over $11,000. The $.10 super paid over $10,000. The trainer is best known for John Henry.
  • Race 7: The $2 double paid $1,314.20.
  • Race 8: Fashionably Fast (Tiago Pereira/Dean Pederson) won the $100,000 feature race after being sent off the favorite. The winner came in from a win at Fresno, a fair track in California. Bred in California by Lucky Pulpit, the same sire as California Chrome, the 4-year-old gelding won for the 5th time in 14 starts but has been victorious in his most recent four races. The trainer has just five horses and won a stakes race at Del Mar for the first time.

  • Race 9: Asaro (Edwin Maldonado/Karen Headley) won at 41-to-1, the longest odds on the board. The trainer won for the second time in 13 starts this year, her background is in hunters and jumpers. The winner paid $85. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $18,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $25,000.
  • Handle: Over $10,500,000.
  • Canceled Thanksgiving: Thursday's card has been canceled due expected rains in southern California.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 8: Amalfi Coast (Eurico da Silva/Kevin Attard) won the Grade 2 $175,000 feature race. The winning horse had two straight wins but both were on turf. Da Silva keeps popping them home.

  • Eurico da Silva won four times and had seven victories on 16 mounts the last two days. I don't know who will win Jockey of the Week but da Silva should get serious consideration. He is retiring at the end of the meet which is December 15. He currently leads the meet in victories.
  • Rafael Hernandez added three wins. He is the second leading jockey at the meet.

Tiz the Law is the Barclay Tagg-trained horse who wowed me in his maiden performance which was at Saratoga. I had no idea he would be on the Kentucky Derby trail. Certainly one who will get my added attention. Constitution, his sire, has the lowest odds among that category (except the field). Still, an uphill battle. Current rider is Manny Franco who won the Champagne with him, Junior Alvarado rode him the first time. Same owners as 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide who was also a New York bred. There are many things to be decided before May arrives.

Kentucky is booming!

Historical racing machines have Kentucky bucking industry trends

Bolstered by revenues from electronic gambling devices, purses on the Kentucky circuit have soared over the past two years, to levels surpassing the average purses at California and comparable to purses at New York tracks for most of the year. And there is far more growth ahead: New investments in casinos by Churchill Downs Inc., Kentucky Downs, and Ellis Park will add more than 4,000 of the electronic gambling devices to Kentucky tracks over the next three years.

What’s more, average handle per race at Kentucky tracks was up double digits at nearly every single meet run so far this year, according to an analysis of wagering, purse, and racing data conducted by Daily Racing Form based on charts of all Kentucky races run in the past three years (the Churchill Downs fall meet was not included in the comparison because the track hosted the Breeders’ Cup last year).
-------------------
In total, the number of machines in operation in Kentucky jumped from 679 in the 2015 fiscal year to 2,829 in the fiscal year ending in June 2019, a 316 percent increase, according to KHRC records. Moreover, the devices are getting better at attracting customers: Total handle through the machines has jumped 446 percent over the same time frame, to $2.03 billion, according to the records.

The largesse at Kentucky Downs has even led the track to transfer millions of dollars in its own purse money to other Kentucky tracks, with the most notable beneficiary being Ellis Park, the sleepy track in western Kentucky that fills out the summer dates on the circuit. This year, Ellis was bought by the Laguna Development Corp., a New Mexico holding company of the Pueblo of Laguna tribe. Under the new ownership, the average purse distributed at Ellis Park reached $35,700, up 29.7 percent over last year and up 46.9 percent over the average purse at the track two years ago.

The only K Derby I ever won was with the gelding FC. Came close with Looking at Lee. That's horse racing. I love it at the track.

Oh yeah, 2003. The year of Empire Maker! :)

I had a successful period in the 1990s picking the Ky Derby winners. Then Captain Bodgit in 1997 hit me like the proverbial ton of bricks and I went into a chasm. Some guy named Bob Baffert beat me. Anyway, I enjoy the dressings of the Derby -- always have and always will even though it may be gimmicky to serious players. I follow the 2-year-olds and watch them develop or flop as their 3-year-old campaigns progress or regress. Oaklawn, Gulf, Santa Anita, Belmont and the usual hot spots become center of attention.

Saw this in an article about KY Derby Future Pool: 5 from Pool 1 made the race last year, 8 in 2018. AP and Nyquist are the only two horses from Pool 1 to win since this wagering program started. Every other winner came from later pools or not listed.

It may be more of a sucker's bet than the Rainbow Six but every so often... I tried twice. I hit the big one with Street Sense back in 2006-07. I thought I would repeat with War Pass 2007-08 but when he went off at 1-to-9 (some say 1-to-20) in the Tampa Bay Derby and lost..then I decided batting .500 wasn't a bad legacy.

As an aside, when Justify won the Ky Derby he won as an unraced 2-year-old, the first since 1882 (Apollo).

No, the Sire Pool is the true sucker's bet.

But seriously, Tiz The Law at 20-1, you get to see the horse run at the KJC before the pool bets close....that's your play. Do it.

I'm very optimistic about the future of Turfway Park when seeing this type of information. The only concern I would have is that the HHRM are having success in markets where conventional gambling options (table games and slots) are not available. Turfway's proximity to Cincinnati and the more standard gambling options might not allow their machines to match the performance levels of the Kentucky Downs, Ellis Park and Churchill Downs HHRMs. Hope that I am wrong. Turway's dated and rapidly deteriorating facility will be razed at the conclusion of their winter meeting which ends n late march or early april. A new casino-type facility will replace it.

I'll also add that one of the reasons that the Kentucky machines might be outperforming industry trends is the relatively newness of the product. It's not as far along in its product's life cycle as most other electronic gambling gadgets are.

@MiamiScreamingEagles Thanks so much for your hard work on your thread. You do a top notch job and those of us who frequent your thread (most times without posting anything) appreciate the information and formatting of your fine work. A buddy of mine who has no interest in hockey and is not a hfboards member views your thread regularly and raves about it.

@Cyclones Rock
^Thank you. That last sentiment is one of extreme appreciation. Thanks to you and your friend for those words. Horse racing can be a difficult sport to follow with much of the action on weekdays and limited national coverage except for dedicated outlets among the reasons. I try to interject some humor with the recaps of the sport but mostly promote the tracks I follow and the sport I love.

  • Ramon Vazquez was a brilliant 6 5-0-0 including winning five straight races heading into the finale which he lost. He won twice each for Karl Broberg and Steve Asmussen who are the two winningest trainers this year in North America.

  • Aqueduct canceled Thursday's card due to expected high winds. Windy weather is often cited by riders in New York as dangerous.
  • Del Mar canceled due to expected heavy rains.
  • Fair Grounds (Louisiana) opens tomorrow. Laurel and Churchill are among the few tracks operating on the holiday.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Junior Alvarado, Manny Franco and Dylan Davis all won consecutive races.
  • Race 7: Turned Aside (Jose Lezcano/Linda Rice) is sired by American Pharoah who is turning out plenty of winners. How many times is this said? Lezcano won on turf.
  • Race 6: An entertaining finish, nearly three across the wire won by an exhaustive ride by Junior Alvarado.
AQU_20191127_6_1.jpg
`
  • Linda Rice is having a strong meet 52 12-5-14 (23%/60%). She is second in wins to Chad Brown among all trainers.
Penn National (Pennsylvania):
  • Card: Three races tonight with purses $100,000 or more. Each was won by the Servis brothers, Jason (2) and John (1).
  • Race 2: Monongahela (Jorge Vargas, Jr./Jason Servis) won the $100,000 race. The PA-bred won from the far outside post #9. He has a 13 5-6-1 career mark at Penn among 27 lifetime starts,
  • Race 3: Precious (Trevor McCarthy/John Servis) improved to a perfect 2 2-0-0 in winning the $100,000 race for juvenile fillies. Among the losers in the field of five was Autonomous (Kendrick Carmouche/Chad Brown) who was out for the second time and is owned by Klaravich Stables who just may win Owner of the Year in North America.
  • Race 4: Firenze Fire (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Jason Servis) improved to 22 8-3-2 in winning the $200,000 feature race. The 4-year-old Florida-bred has earned over $1.6 million.

  • Brandon Kulp won with both of his starters. The trainer has won five of his last six entered the past two cards. That qualifies as a serious roll.
Charles Town (West Virginia):
  • Race 6: Creepy the Crab (Yomar Ortiz/Nancy Heil) failed to break his maiden. The 6-year-old is now 45 0-4-8. after a third place finish. Creepy will win eventually. He just has to taste victory once! The trainer is winless this year, 44-0-2-8.
Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Opening day: Today was what is generally considered as opening day of the meet which extends into June 2020. The meet officially opened for one day on July 1, 2019 part of the fiscal year but no live racing has been conducted since then.
  • Angel Suarez rode three winners.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over a quarter of a million dollars. More than $255,000 was collected by one bettor. Someone just gave thanks for this card.

  • Race 9: Won by Declan Cannon on board a 43-to-1 shot, the second largest odds on the board.
  • Race 8: Initially won by Tyler Gaffalione, who picked up the mount, until a DQ elevated Corey Lanerie. The two are battling for the rider's championship at the meet but Lanerie currently leads by seven wins.

Kentucky Derby prep schedule: Kentucky Derby Prep Races . Next week, Aqueduct and Los Alamitos run preps.

Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 28, 2019

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Canceled, which was announced yesterday, due to high winds.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Trevor McCarthy, who won a big race last night at Penn National, had two winners today.
  • Race 9: Let's Play Nine (Trevor McCarthy/Michael Trombetta) was the only first-time starter and won at 3-to-1... by more than 10 lengths.
  • Race 7: The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $10,000.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Strong card: Five of the 12 races held purses in excess of $100,000 on this holiday card.
  • Race 12: The $.50 tri returned $1,165.10. The $.10 super paid over $4,700. The $.50 Pick 3 was a nice $3,422. The $.50 Pick 4 returned over $35,000. But it was the $.50 Pick 5 which shook the masses at $230,000+. By my count, more than $900,000 was bet on this one race. Yesterday, the Pick 6 was hit for $250,000+.
  • Race 11: Kallio (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh), at 14-to-1, won the Grade 3 $175,000 Cardinal Stakes. The 4-year-old filly won a graded stakes for the first time.

  • Race 10: The $.50 tri returned $1,888.50.
  • Race 9: Mylady Curlin (Tyler Gaffalione/Brad Cox) won the Grade 2 $300,000 Falls City Handicap. The 4-year-old filly improved to 6-2-2- in her last 10 starts.

  • Chris Landeros rode three winners.
  • Tyler Gaffalione had a magnificent day winning both graded stakes race. The kid can ride. Gaffalione is second at the meet in wins, five behind Corey Lanerie.

  • Martin Garcia also rode two winners.
  • Brad Cox trained two winners.
Del Mar (California):
  • Canceled, which was announced a few days ago, due to expected rains.

This time of the year is normally a lull between the Breeders' Cup being the unofficial end of the racing calendar and then some weeks before attention turns to the following year. But with Gulfstream's important championship meet opening, Del Mar and Churchill winding down, Tampa Bay and Fair Grounds opening, and Aqueduct having decent cards, this weekend is chock full of betting opportunities.

From New York...

Todd Pletcher has two entered, including the morning line favorite, without any riders named. Chad Brown has an 8-to-1 -- on turf in New York. That doesn't happen often. This is a good, deep field on what should be an entertaining card especially for this time of the year.

Aqueduct (New York):

  • Card: Three races $150,000 or more.
  • Handle: $9,000,000 roughly.
  • Dylan Davis won consecutive races for the second straight card. At one point, he won four of five rides spanning two race days.
  • Race 10: Mike Luzzi got a rare ride and won the finale by a head over Jose Ortiz. Luzzi has two wins this meet, both in finales, and both in photos over the Ortiz brothers. Luzzi!
  • Race 9: Temple (Jorge A. Vargas, Jr./Michael Maker) won the $150,000 Gio Ponti Stakes by a nose. The rider won for the second time in 35 mounts this meet. He picked up the mount for Javier Castellano who was victorious earlier in the day but was en route to California. Maker, who had two entered, finished 1-2. Star trainer Mark Casse had three entered and each finished in the bottom four. Ouch!
AQU_20191129_9_1.jpg

  • Race 8: John Velazquez-Todd Pletcher combined to win the $150,000 Grade 3 feature.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Chalk: A chalky day at Laurel. Six of nine races won by favorites and only one win bet reached $10.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing day: The meet ends December 1. Corey Lanerie maintains a 5-win lead over Tyler Gaffalione among riders.
  • Race 12: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $22,000 to each winner.
  • Race 11: Tom's d'Etat (Joel Rosario/Albert Stall, Jr.) won the $600,000 Grade I Clark Stakes. The two lowest shots on the board finished 1-2 but the $2 exacta was a decent $19.80. Almost $400,000 was bet into that pool. The 6-year-old horse is owned by the Benson family (New Orleans Saints) and has won nearly $1m this year. He has won 9 of 16 lifetime.
  • Race 9: Nay Lady Nay (Junior Alvarado/Chad Brown) won the $300,000 Grade 2 Mrs. Revere Stakes at 7-to-1. I have touted Alvarado..forever. Good rider especially in certain situations. A rare ride at CD for him, he delivered. Brown will get much acclaim -- because he is Chad Brown -- but that was a terrific effort by the jockey, too.

Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):

  • Gerald Bennett is 6 3-0-2 (50%/83%) at the meet through two days, the only trainer with more than two wins. He excels at the track.
Gulfstream Park (Florida):
  • Opening day: Day one of the Championship Meet.
  • Handle: Over $7,000,000 bet.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $85,000.
  • Cristian Torres won twice. Again, he could be the leading candidate for North American Apprentice of the Year.
Del Mar (California):
  • Abel Cedillo and Drayden van Dyke both have a meet-leading 11 winning rides.
  • Flavien Prat is 38 8-17-3. He probably would prefer more winning rides but he has hit the board nearly 3 out of 4 times.
  • Closing day: The meet ends December 1.

  • Brian Hernandez, Jr. and Emisael Jaramillo were among the riders with big days but Paco Lopez should win Jockey of the Week in North America. UPDATE: Paco Lopez did win Jockey of the Week.
  • Todd Pletcher sent out six starters at two tracks and won three times.
  • Chad Brown's only win among eight starters came at Laurel. He did not win at either Del Mar (four starters) or Aqueduct (three starters).
  • Jose Ortiz, who could be a finalist for top jockey in North America though he likely won't win, has lost his last 24 starts. He last won on November 23. He is only winning at a 13% clip this meet at Aqueduct but he is fifth in money earned.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Over $10,500,000 bet.
  • Joel Rosario rode winners in both graded stakes.
  • Race 3: The $1 Pick 3 was a lofty $4,200+.
  • Race 6: Jose Lezcano won on turf.
  • Race 7: Jose Lezcano won on turf. How many times do we say this?
  • Race 8: Performer (Joel Rosario/Shug McGaughey) won the $200,000 Grade 3. The winner edged Tax who was in this year's Kentucky Derby. Performer has won his last four starts after beginning his career with a place spot. Today's race his first attempt in a graded stakes.
  • Race 9: Si Que Es Buena (Joel Rosario/Bill Mott) won the $400,000 Grade 3. A 6-year-old Argentinian mare, she has won three of five starts in North America after racing twelve times in her home country. Rosario rode the rail ideally and closed splendidly.
  • Mike Luzzi has the same winning percentage (12%) this meet as John Velazquez. Just sayin'. :sarcasm:
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 2: Romanoff (Ashley Castrenze/Claudio Gonzalez) wired the field in a repeat performance from earlier this month in a maiden race. When Ashley Castrenze wires the field the Saturday after Thanksgiving, we should give thanks and praise. The trainer is winning at 31% this meet and leads in wins.
  • Race 5: In a field of seven and a $100,000 purse, trainers Arnaud Delacour and Bernard Houghton each had three entered.
  • Sheldon Russell (35), Alex Cintron (35) and Trevor McCarthy (34) are 1-2-3 respectively among the meet's winningest riders. The meet concludes December 29.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Card: Saturday was billed as the second "Stars of Tomorrow" with a focus on 2-year-olds. It was a sloppy day due to rain and turf racing was removed.
  • Brian Hernandez, Jr. rode the entire card and finished a fantastic 12 4-4-1. He is closing in on 2,000 lifetime wins.
  • Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen teamed to win both graded stakes.
  • Cherie DeVaux, one time assistant to Chad Brown, had two winners with three starters. This is her first multi-win day in her young career.
  • Race 2: Twenty horses entered and after scratches, the #20 ran. A rarity for a #20 to see the light at any track.
  • Race 9: Finite (Ricardo Santana, Jr. /Steve Asmussen) won the $300,000 Grade 2 after being sent off as the 4-to-5 favorite. The 2-year-old filly has won her last three starts after beginning her career with two defeats.
  • Race 11: Silver Prospector (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) pulled a mild upset as he won the $300,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at 7-to-1 and paid $17.80. The winner had one win in five prior starts. Finnick the Fence (Sonny Leon/Rey Hernandez) placed at 87-to-1 and paid $41.40 in the middle. The $2 exacta was an enormous $737.60. Tiz the Law (Manny Franco/Barclay Tagg) finished third at 3-to-5 after being boxed early in the race, made a move and appeared to find a seam but the rally was stymied. South Bend (Julien Leparoux/Stanley Hough) posed a little threat early but weakened at 5-to-2. This was a Kentucky Derby prep race.

Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Gerardo Corrales won the first four races en route to a 5-victory afternoon.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Emisael Jaramillo had a tremendous day going 10 5-2-1 including three stakes victories. He rode every race except the third. Five wins on a card is always an impressive feat. He is 19 7-2-4 (37%/68%) through two days of the meet. Later, usually after December, the higher profiled jockeys settle at Gulfstream.
EKp9Tl-WoAI8dhm.jpg
  • Luis Saez-Todd Pletcher teamed three times and won twice. Saez, riding for the second day since returning from a multi-day suspension, won for the first time since Nov. 7.
  • Todd Pletcher is off to a hot start at the meet with a 4 3-0-0 mark.
  • Race 1: Three-across-the-wire in an entertaining conclusion to the opener.
  • Race 2: A 134-to-1 shot placed and paid $91.40/$29.20. That place number is as high as I remember at Gulfstream.
Delta Downs (Louisiana):
  • Karl Broberg leads North America in victories for all trainers. He added three more wins at this track.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Kent Desormeaux moved his tack here -- returning home -- after a long stay in southern California but he has yet to find a win. He is 18 0-2-1.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Race 8: Mugaritz (Ricardo Gonzalez/Jonathan Wong) was sent off the favorite and won the Grade 3 $100,000 feature race. The 4-year-old gelding has won six in a row, last lost in 2018 and is 8-for-13 lifetime.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $16,000,000 bet and that includes over $800,000 added to the late Pick 4 pool. By my estimate, approximately $2.5 million was wagered on the last race. Good show today at Del Mar.
  • Paco Lopez had a dream day as he won three of the four graded stakes. He mostly rides the mid-Atlantic and Florida. Lopez is having a brilliant 2019 at a career-best 27% at last check. Only three jockeys have more victories in North America this year than Lopez and two of them are the Ortiz brothers. Wow!
  • Javier Castellano and John Velazquez were among those who ventured west. The two mainly east coast riders are in the Hall of Fame.
  • Race 2: Alms (Paco Lopez/Michael Stidham) won the $100,000 Grade 3 and improved to 3 3-0-0. The 2-year-old filly is owned by top syndicate Godolphin and was purchased through a private sale.
  • Race 4: Zuzanna (Paco Lopez/Robert Hess) was sent off the largest odds on the board at 23-to-1 and won the $100,000 Grade 3. The winner is a 5-yerar-old mare.
  • Race 6: Next Shares (Jose Valdivia, Jr./Richard Baltas) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap, a field of nine, at 27-to-1 and paid $56.40. The 6-year-old gelding snapped a 6-race losing streak at 27-to-1 but has earned over $1.6 million. The $.50 Pick 3 paid $1,239. Valdivia, Jr. had been racing mainly in Illinois recently.

  • Race 8: Mo Forza (Paco Lopez/Peter Miller) won the $300,000 Grade 1 Hollywood Derby. The 3-year-old colt has won three straight after starting his career with five straight losses. Lopez had the mount for the first time.

  • Race 9: A 21-to-1 won, the second largest odds on the board. This contributed mightily to the massive Pick 6 payout that followed the conclusion of the next race.
  • Race 10: The $2 Pick 6 paid $428,000+. Well, now!
  • Closing day: With Sunday being the final day of the meet, Abel Cedillo and Drayden van Dyke each have 12 wins to top the leader board.

And now more on that winning ticket at Del Mar...

Del Mar: Single pick six ticket pays $428,459

There was a single winning ticket in Saturday's $2 pick six which paid $428,459.

The winning ticket was purchased for $128 through TwinSpires.com, according to track officials.

As a result, there is no carryover going into Sunday's final day of the autumn meeting, but there is a mandatory payout in the pick six regardless of whether there are six winners or only five.

The winners of Saturday's pick six races were Platinum Equity ($8.80), Next Shares ($56.40), Golden Principal ($3), Mo Forza ($7.60), Dark Hedges ($44) and Impossible Task ($9.60).

Golden Principal and Mo Forza were favored.
