I know you guys like to pile on Peters, and somewhat within reason given that he is truly your #3 goalie being asked to play like a #1 and failing, but this might be one of the most sane posts here. This goes way beyond the skaters not trusting the goalie. Even if this statement isn't true (pressure on said goalie), it follows that it's quite possible that the goalie doesn't trust the team in front of him and the skaters don't trust the goalie behind them. It's a lack of trust, a lack of a "team" mentality, and something that can be seen by watching one player on the ice. I've already voiced whom that player is, and others here have mentioned him by name as well. It's not the coach, it's not the goalie, it's not the system, and it's not the injuries. The players are playing where they have to out of necessity.
Is it Peters's fault that being 3/4 on the depth chart he now has to start every game in the NHL and looks out of place? Is it Jordan's fault he is being asked to do something he has never done in the NHL before because a GM gave up the moon for a player based on name? Is it Muller's fault that the team has no depth and very few prospects to solve any holes? It could possibly be argued that Muller might be at some fault for the lack of fire, but that comes from the ice. Even if it is exclusively Muller's fault (and Lavi, and Maurice...), who hired them?
Look at the "best" captains in the league. "Captain Cliche," Jonathon Toews backchecks like holy hell, even if his team is up or down 4 goals. Lando and Cally lead by physicality and emotion. Crosby is always one of the hardest workers on the ice, even while he is injured. What does Eric Staal do on the ice? Pout? Take stupid, lazy penalties? Coast? Where's the fire, the tenacity that true captains exude? Francis and Brind'Amour had it. It's not like he hasn't had examples of leaders to learn from.
GM and captain. The leaders of their individual branches of the organization. The GM leads the parade from the front-office down through the coaches and fitness staff. The captain leads the players on the ice. Both are out of their leagues in their roles. It starts and ends there. Until that changes, the Hurricanes will become what the Rangers were in the 2000s. What the Thrashers became. What Colorado was. What the Devil's are struggling to avoid. Stop blaming a #3 goalie.
