I do not see us naming a captain until after Mathews signs and it is looking more and more like it is Rielly as the captain with every passing day.

I doubt that we trade for Reilly.

Why doesnt Matthews he have an A now? And how often to players go from no letter too captain? Would guess it ends up with Tavares or Rielly. Leafs got some good choices for captain, good problem to have.

I don't believe that wearing a letter prior is a prerequisite for being a captain. McDavid, Eichel, Landeskog, Anders Lee and Nick Foligno never wore an A before being named captain.

I feel like the C may be a part of the negotiation for his new contract with the Leafs. They offer him the captaincy, which will land him numerous sponsorships, etc. in exchange for him taking a lesser deal.
