Matthews on team criticism: 'We really don't care what other people think'

These words and interview right now on tsn really show no realistic aspects or realism. Also the thing and proof why Tavares is the Captain easily. He's just smarter. Not the most explosive player or talker of course, but you can't say dirt like this. Nowhere. Y'all seen the film "Fan" no? With DeNiro and Wesley Snipes. That there teaches some people and folks some hard stuff. Sports and athletes need people like US and the FANS. They are the ones seeing the games and players and paying for that. "Now do you care?" Yells out Deniro's character Gil Renard on that film. Now do you care? Yeah, good question.

Be stupid and selfish too Torontonian players and human beings. This is the hard evidense right there again. Ice hockey players generally aren't that intelligent, it doesn't matter. They only think about ice hockey so its natural. Coaches to mee are much more interesting and always have been. There are expections of course, but rare there are y'a'll already know. This is just plain stupid though. Don't say things like these, especially out loud. Keep some thangs to yourself and save some. Silence is golden.

What an interview. How "intelligent and non selfish."Matthews on team criticism: 'We really don't care what other people think'

Did you expect him to berate the team, the general manager, and the roster?

Why would or should athletes care about what media types think of their teams?

Why would Matthews specifically, care what is written by any scribe in Toronto, he had his personal information stolen and disseminated a couple of months ago by a “journalist”, someone who didn’t even reflect on how morally corrupt his action was.

Matthew's delivered in the regular season and was by far the best player during the playoffs.

He absolutely should block out the noise and just keep focusing on what he's doing.
I also think he was the best player during the reg.season and him and tavares being the best players in the playofffs also. I am definitely for this blocking off the noise stuff though. Of course I'm not. Some players listen and respect the fans and media, some don't. They play for us. We are going to the games to see them and through the television set also. See the film fan sire. DeNiro and Snipes deliver hard on that. Tony Scott film.

Matthews needs to take it to the next level if he wants to avoid criticism. He was the best of 4 this year but underperformed relative to his caphit. He was around 8-11th best player this year and in the playoffs cane up short once again with no points in the deciding game (3rd year in a row). Matthews making this comment is better and more acceptable than marner/nylander/JT who werent good enough but Matthews still need to take a major stride to be able to live up to his insane deal. Hopefully he becomes a better playmaker next year and can keep his defensive consistency from the playoffs for most of the regular season.

I disagree. Regardless of performance none of the player should give a shit what the people on the outside have to say about it. Why exactly should they? If anyone thinks they need to read an angry article on the athletic or mean tweets to understand they didn't play well enough is kind of off the plot lol.

It's pretty hard to avoid criticism as a player in this day and age and not be impacted by what others are saying about you. With social media so prominent, players get shitted on frequently. The players want ti keep a good perception of themselves but it becomes hard to do so at difficult times like right now Sure players dont care much about what fans say but if the fans are routinely expressing their doubts and dispaointiment on the team it can have impact on the players morale. In game if a home team boos the home goalie (or worse give a bronx cheer) it impacts the players ability in game. Matthews and everyone else can try and shut off the criticism but its not going anywhere unless their are major improvements in the results next year. Matthew's saying he beliefs in his team/managers is nice to hear but it's all PR. JT said the same things about the islanders before leaving due to hopes of finding a better spot for his future legacy. Another leafs failure can push a competitive guy like Matthews to have second thoughts on whether he can win here with the managment and players in place

Couldnt be said any better Matthews. makes me want to follow you because I'm starting to not care about the Leafs anymore. in the end what does it matter?
Be nice if I could actually be happy as a Leafs fan again. are we only here to get pointed and laughed at?
Embarrassing to be a Leafs fan. makes me not want to support them anymore and just follow the overall NHL.

He is right. Why should he care about all the media/fans that want to just bash the team? The team believing in each other is what is important.

It's just words though. That's the issue.

Saying they believe in themselves, and actually believing in themselves, is a completely different thing.

If they actually believed in themselves, they would have shown it at times

The OP has a full stop after we don't care what people think. Like that was a full thought. When it is "We don't care what people think or, how far away otherpeople think we are. We are going to power through this adversity and we will break through eventually." Where are the mods on this one. You would be led to believe that Mathews was saying some the negative about the fans.

Great response overall by Matthews. He was a beast and just seems to continously get better. His full commentary is mature and valid. Nice trolling attempt by the OP to bait with the selective quotation not that you need to do much around these parts to get people to dump on the Leafs lol.

In Ovi's first 9 years they missed the playoffs 3 times and never made it past the second round. They've actually never made it past the second round except once: The year they won the cup.

With 14 seasons of Ovi they have a total of 1 cup win and 1 second round win.

Obviously we don't want it to be as bad as the Caps but theres so many complex factors in winning the cup that patience is your best bet. Hold on to your skill and let circumstance and luck take care of rounding out the rest of the roster. Never know what picks will hit, what 900k player will give you 5 mil value during a run, what disgruntled team suddenly has a top 4 D to trade at a reduced price etc.

For a decade only 3 teams were winning: Pens/Hawks/Kings

No moves off emotion. Just keep drafting and developing and like Matthews said, ignore the noise. Last thing you want to do is see Nylander put up 90 points on another team just because we wanted a Pesce to not ice the puck on a clear.

I think all players should disregard what medias and fans say and think. But also use that as a fuel to light the fire inside them and prove them wrong.
Its been like that since there are pro sports.
Really nothing wrong with what AM said. I mean if players start to believe what medias and fans think, thats where trouble starts as it goes both ways.
Medias/fans can be over critical but can also be over generous with comments. Like player X will become the next so and so....would you rather want a player to believe and thinking his talents can go far without hard work?
